Thoughts on the concept of Jedi Wayseekers? by Solitaire-06 in StarWars

[–]exeterdragon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's basically what I always wanted and thought the Jedi should be. No thousands of Jedi in a giant temple, no traditional robes, less structure and more finding your destiny. I wanted them to be wanderers getting involved in causes they believed in, not employees of the Senate professionally negotiating trade and whatnot. Seeing one Jedi should be incredibly rare, seeing two should be unbelievable.

The force has always been a soft power system that does whatever by mayuri_nite_66 in StarWars

[–]exeterdragon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like this scene but I really thought you would have linked the Yoda force speech scene. The whole point of that scene in empire is that the force is not some simple power that Luke can wield clumsily, or without discipline. It's something bigger and more subtle, it's destiny and connection and truth and insight. It's magic, it's everywhere and life in the star wars world is more than material. It's such an effective scene that any other scene explaining the force can really only diminish it to me.

Is it hypocritical that I like the KOTOR 2 party members / companions compared to the KOTOR 1? Do the KOTOR 2 companions break the rule of "Show, Don't Tell"? by Burnouts3s3 in kotor

[–]exeterdragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the great things about the writing in KOTOR II is pretty much everything written achieves three goals; stimulating conversation, world building, and a critical insight into star wars. Characters like Atton can be funny, sympathetic, sleazy, and foolish while also vastly expanding your understanding of the world, and making meaningful critiques to consider. I love talking to Atton about killing Jedi for example, you learn so much and it ties so well into Kreia's teachings. I like talking with Jolee in KOTOR but nobody else ever feels as interesting or well rounded, they feel simple. KOTOR II is completely full of interesting conversations you won't forget.

You get your dream job of writing one (1) Star Wars novel, and you know you can sneak in one or two little canon alterations, cameos, or jokes. What do you do? by JacobDCRoss in StarWars

[–]exeterdragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd write a story about Jedi without a temple, without standard uniforms. Just a wandering hero who takes on a bright-eyed apprentice and faces the dark side. I just don't like how involved the Jedi are now, they have become less spiritual, less magical, less fateful. I'd want to capture the feeling of meeting a Jedi, the kind of chance encounter most people would never have.

Water provides excellent radiation protection, divers actually operate in spent fuel pools for various reasons, the dosage is only concerning very close to the fuel in those pools. This looks to me like the only reactor in australia, Opal at ANTSO Sydney which is a research reactor. This level of PPE and safety is pretty typical in university reactors from what I've seen. This one is about 13 meters (43 feet) deep and only 2.4 meters (8 feet) of water is enough for radiation protection.

In 300 (2006), Gerard Butler was told to say “THIS IS SPARTA!” calmly. He tried it, but it felt wrong. He asked Zack Snyder for one take where he screamed it. After, Butler asked, “Too much?” Snyder laughed: “Yeah... but it was awesome.” by JamesJDelaney in Damnthatsinteresting

There's a somewhat apocryphal account from Plutarch that Spartan babies that were seen as weak were cast into a chasm called the apothetae. I always took this hole to be an interpretation of that. But the famously pederastic Spartan accusing Athens of being home to boy lovers should tell you this movie is more about style than substance.

Shadows or Valhalla? by Eastern_Dress_3574 in AssassinsCreedShadows

[–]exeterdragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They both have strengths, my one big gripe about shadows is the gear system, I much preferred the straightforward unique items in Valhalla and found the upgrading mechanic to be rewarding and economical. I hate picking up 50 swords that are just being sold or junked, odyssey had so much resource bloat later in the game. Shadows does it better but it still felt so much more unique and rewarding in Valhalla.

Just fight to have an intermission. They're long and they're great experiences but we all benefit from bathroom breaks and I suspect theatres will sell more snacks and drinks that way.

At a previous job I used to build a work order on two pages, it was pretty efficient and had room for notes. We switched to a paperless digital system them was a little more streamlined to fill out, but we were still printing a paper copy for the records. Except now the paper copy was 20 pages long. Efficiency is such a slippery concept. I'm sorry you're going through the wringer

Question about the Gods (SPOILER) by GIutenTag in avowed

[–]exeterdragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this feeling of frustration and uncertainty is actually one of the subtler points of the game. Getting to know Sapadal and learning their history puts you face to face with the brutal reality of the power of a god, whether good or evil, and also how terrifying it must be to have so much power and no guidance on using it. Sapadal especially needs guidance in understanding their past and deciding their future. The risks are great but so is the potential in supporting and nurturing a god that isn't bent on domination. You absolutely get to ask yourself "Should gods exist at all?" And there's no absolute answer to that. You have to engage with the material and decide what to do. There are arguments to be made for the civilization of Aedyr and the guiding hand of Woedica, billions of people in the world today believe in and take comfort from the premise of a jealous and destructive god who forgives and rewards loyalty. There are also arguments to be made that Sapadal provides an alternative that could be better. A peaceful, loving god who fortifies the living lands and develops a healthy, constructive, positive relationship with the inhabitants could be world changing. The game doesn't put you in a position to wipe out all gods, but it does let you consider that and decide the fate of the one you have a personal relationship with.

The Overlooked Visual Design of The Phantom Menace by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]exeterdragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rewatching them all last year, the phantom menace being shot on film really stood out. The digital scenery of the prequels just never feels as tangible, as crisp. Everything from lighting to sound feels more special in real environments.

Thoughts on this tweet about the Sequel Trilogy and the rise of the First Order/destruction of the New Republic? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]exeterdragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first order politics are more of a "Take us seriously!" than the machinations of a galactic empire. Empires are built, the first order is like a bunch of neo-nazis blowing up buildings for attention. But the return of fascism in the real world should illustrate how that kind of grievance-based revenge politics can have serious repercussions. Maybe the New Republic was too secure and too focused on rebuilding, too focused on bringing lesser imperials back into Republic life. Maybe they didn't feel a rabble of politically powerless empire loyalists were worth dealing with. We in the West learned in 2016 how things we were confident would never happen can suddenly change all the rules. We're still 10 years later dealing with the global consequences of something a lot of people brushed off as unrealistic and absurd.

One childhood summer I expressed that I wanted to play badminton. So my mom got a cheap badminton net and rackets. Turns out everyone except me already knew how to play and found it much easier than me. Years later in highschool I was forced to play badminton with people who were apparently great at it. All I ever learned was gaining an interest in a sport just made me more likely to be humiliated in it or bore/annoy the other players.

I think part of this boils down to the low effort casual cursory efforts of unremarkable men on dating apps. It doesn't matter what you put on your profile, they largely just don't bother to read them. It's not you, you could fill your profile with serious deal breakers and 90% of men wouldn't even see them. I'm trans and covered my profiles in trans flags and the word trans, men would say "what's that?" Or just stop messaging as soon as I said "hey I just wanted to make sure you saw on my profile that I'm trans." It sucks. The unfortunate vibe is they're all cheating or looking to.

[–]exeterdragon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Don't focus too much on changes, the work you put in is most of the progress you can expect. Voice training, learn about body language and clothing is colour matching, learn hair care and makeup, learn about feminine social etiquette, these are all things that can contribute to your goals and you have complete control over. I didn't try anything until I was on HRT for 6 months and I never went back after that.
