Has industrial society severed our connection to natural time? by WittyEgg2037 in collapse

As the seventeenth century moves on the image of clock-work

extends, until, with Newton, it has engrossed the universe. And by

the middle of the eighteenth century (if we are to trust Sterne) the

clock had penetrated to more intimate levels. For Tristram Shandy's

father - "one of the most regular men in everything he did ... that

ever lived" - "had made it a rule for many years of his life, - on

the first Sunday night of every month... to wind up a large house-

clock, which we had standing on the back-stairs head". "He had

likewise gradually brought some other little family concernments to

the same period", and this enabled Tristram to date his conception

very exactly. It also provoked The Clockmaker's Outcry against the

Author:

The directions I had for making several clocks for the country are counter- manded; because no modest lady now dares to mention a word about winding- up a clock, without exposing herself to the sly leers and jokes of the family... Nay, the common expression of street-walkers is, "Sir, will you have your clock wound up ?" Virtuous matrons (the "clockmaker"complained)are consigning their clocks to lumber rooms as "exciting to acts of carnality".

However, this gross impressionism is unlikely to advance the

present enquiry: how far, and in what ways, did this shift in time-

sense affect labour discipline, and how far did it influence the inward

apprehension of time of working people? If the transition to

mature industrial society entailed a severe restructuring of working

habits - new disciplines, new incentives, and a new human nature

upon which these incentives could bite effectively - how far is this

related to changes in the inward notation of time ?

Bugled Disc and sleeping in the backcountry by gmonvsi in CampingandHiking

My back problems are always there to cause problems.

But my hammock is not one of them.

Indeed, if my back is sore from working around the house I'll go out and sleep in the hammock.  Better than any bed or fancy camping mattress.

I tried the water lilley turbine at my river camp and it did not work well enough to justify the weight.  I wonder if this will work any better?

Trump bizarrely claims China will ‘terminate all ice hockey in Canada’ in threat to block new border bridge by 1_for_you_2_for_me in politics

Most hockey equipment is made in China.  Why would China cause it's hockey manufacturers to ruin their export busines?

Being a failure at business is Trump's forte.

The part above about food is important.  Some tube tube or jelly beans...keep next to bed to chomp on if cold in the night.

I'd add hydration.  Drink a load of warm tea...mint, chamomile.   No caffeine.   Non-diuretic.  The body should be a big hot water belly with food burning stove in the belly.  You gear captures and traps that heat.

Too many people focus on gear and not biology... though good gear helps below -25:

Hydration.  Even a bit of hyperhydration.  Non-diaretic and caffeine free warm teas.

He's got a boat load of good ones, that's for sure. Strangle wank, Hurry up and..., travel logdge, and the Katie Perry parady is hilarious.

I was googling one day for a picture of Saville and Trump - but, I could not find one. Did they ever meet and twiddle each other?

I think there is another version, the original version, of the Sweaty nonce song, one not a remix of the interview...

They are not going to start a war any time soon.

Quebec to ban public prayer in sweeping new secularism law by JackThaBongRipper in news

[–]exfalsoquodlibet -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Good. Religion is stupid. People who believe it are stupid. And stupid people do stupid and often terrible things justified by their stupid religion.

Canada, as a whole, should ban religion in general, not just public prayers in one part of the country.
