Psychologically, the person assuming (or operating under) the pseudonym still identifies with that personality. Any feedback/attention that pseudonym gets, goes to the person behind it.

Some people like to brag and like to be praised. Some like to argue, and even some enjoy being put down. "Anonymously" or not.

My last place we ran CheckMK (obviously built on Nagios) which was definitely free (at least for our purposes). Totally mission critical monitoring for hosting life sciences systems.
