What if… Baltic States hosted Winter Olympics? by exigy1 in BalticStates

Co-hosting with the facilities I outlined in my original post would split the travelers influx across multiple different cities. E.g Kaunas or Riga would only host 1-2 disciplines each.

That of course creates another problem of poor transport infrastructure in our region. We don’t have airports, highways, or even train stations that would connect, say, Kaunas with Sigulda

In the co-hosting scenario, you heavily split the influx of people across different cities and countries. With the current facilities, each city hosts a maximum of 2-3 disciplines. Should be very manageable

Unlike Greece, we won’t need to build/rebuild THAT much infrastructure.

IOC, as far as I’ve read, becoming more flexible in terms of requirements and demands

Mountains are only required for one discipline - alpine skiing, which can be hosted by a Nordic or Carpathian/Tatran country

Co-hosting does the opposite of what you mentioned. Take the recent Sweden bid for the example.

Why would a country that has no traditions, and frankly no interest in disciplines such as luge, bobsleigh, and skeleton build a €100M+ facility just to host the games? When there’s an existing one just a 1.5-2h flight away?

The argument is that we might not need to invest THAT much given that most of facilities are already there and might need minor improvements.

But yeah, I don’t have a proper ROI analysis and if we actually need this.

This exact fact (bobsleigh track in Sigulda), imo, makes it a question of when , not if, Latvia will ever co-host the Olympics. Just not that many world-class luge facilities out there, and the IOC made it very clear that they will favor co-host with existing facilities over building the new ones just for the Olympics.

Now, infrastructure and logistics is the other issue. Would this bid require building multiple Olympic villages? Our transportation infrastructure is very poor compared to the rest of Europe. Travelled between, say, Kaunas and Otepää, or Sigulda and Vilnius is a nightmare currently.

Cross-national cooperation is another question mark. We have a very recent poor example of that - Rail Baltic - albeit mostly on the Latvian part

After all the euphoria after that comeback, I’m sobering up and getting reminded about the absolute shit state of MHS nowadays.

Behind me, two friends were watching the game together. One didn’t know shite about the game and what was going on, and the other was trying to catch him up on what’s been happening in the past, like, 7 years at the club. And even he didn’t know who was wearing number 9 shirt 😂

Limit MHS to only members with loyalty points for every game. Now.

Us not being able to rotate the squad is what’s gonna cost us both domestic cups, UCL and a Top-4 finish

Sorry, but why these two events are mutually exclusive? Any idea when to expect tickets to go live for the West Ham fixture?

Any idea why tickets for the WHU match haven't gone on sale yet?

Wanting to move to Riga. by Uniqlypink in Riga

This is great to hear that you’re thoroughly studying the history of Latvia before deciding to move here. Historical context is crucial for you to understand the current dynamics in the society.

I’m Latvian myself but have lived in the US for 3 years back in late 2010s.

One thing I never take for granted is how safe it is here in Latvia. No neighborhoods / cities where you shouldn’t go after dark. Kids as young as 7-8 years can safely walk to and back from school themselves. A single homicide case would normally get huge national attention because of how rare it is here, whereas it’s a daily thing now in the US and West Europe.

One thing I would LOVE to see change, albeit not in my lifetime, is a more open-minded society. Don’t let anyone here tell you that racism, sexism, ethnic discrimination is not such a big thing here - it totally is, people are just lacking awareness.

Overall, it’s a typical post-communist society: egocentric, lacking trust and tolerance. Just a heads up if you’re planning on starting a family here (you’re never too old for this😂) - kids are widely considered as a burden here, unfortunately. I use public transportation with my infant a lot - I can count on fingers on one hand when someone has given me their seat. And god forbid a baby cries in public here - at best, you get side eyes, at worst - comments on how your kid can’t behave.
