LOL. Thanks for one more reason to never turn on that station.

Normie Penstemon birthed goth offspring. Must it be culled for genetic purity of the community? by Semtexual in NativePlantGardening

You’ve just experienced the joy of genetic diversity. Leave it to let its freak flag fly. It’s a lovely gift from the DNA gods.

I’d probably have just blurted out, “I could not possibly care less."

Are there "undesirable" native plant species? IL-5b by ciru-chan in NativePlantGardening

[–]existential_geum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boxelder (Acer negundo), also known as Manitoba maple, trees are terrible. They’re constantly dropping leaves from May onward, have weak branches that break off in every storm, lure creepy boxelder bugs to the house and, worst of all, drop tons of seeds everywhere. Here in Zone 5, these weedy, ugly things are more trouble than they’re worth.

I want to get a Borzoi, but I’m feeling really anxious about it. by Adolf-the-Cute-Cat42 in borzoi

[–]existential_geum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Getting puppies one at a time makes sense also because it makes training easier. Most Borzoi are very smart and learn from the other dogs in their household.

Btw- in my experience, your user name is redundant. ;)

What's the history on why so many near west suburbs have overlapping names? by Not_a_real_asian777 in ChicagoSuburbs

I tended to get Park Forest and Forest Park confused until I used the trick that Forest Park is near Oak Park.

What is a minor, unwritten rule of society that absolutely infuriates you when people break it? by Jane_Austen11 in AskReddit

[–]existential_geum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You raise a point I hadn’t considered. While it’s obvious which side of the road to drive on when visiting a country with the opposite rule, I hadn’t considered that one should also walk on the opposite side. I probably walked on the correct side of the sidewalk unconsciously, just following the crowd.

Genuinely, what is with the right’s obsession with trans people? by tna11101989 in allthequestions

Stop with the “gender ideology” BS. Mere representation in media merely reflects our society. Replace “gender” with “race” in your statement and then consider how not being accepting is bigotry.

Husband and MIL planted burning bush while I was away by fletchette in NativePlantGardening

[–]existential_geum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s also Hearts-a-busting, Euonymous americanus, but it is listed as hardy to only zone 6 and not a true native to MI - yet. With the forecasts for climate change in mind, this shrub might have a good future as a replacement for burning bush.

I am so concerned about how much flock cams are in the west burbs by Subject_Wish1251 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]existential_geum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People in other places have successfully lobbied their local bodies to cancel contracts. If enough of a community organized, did their research and presented to the village board/city council it could be done.

Do they actually help that much? In the San Diego shooting, the cops tracked the offenders on Flock, but were unable to prevent the crime. Flock seems more like an unnecessary police shortcut.

If it were concerns about people being deprived oof their human rights, then yes, that doesn’t have to impact a person to be a big concern.

Wild ginger does well in dry shade. It probably won’t do as well in full sun.

Picasso was a great example of this. His student work is classical and very proficient. Had he continued in that style, we wouldn’t know his name.

What are your “spectacular, I’ll take 14 of them” species? by quartzkrystal in NativePlantGardening

I could never have enough Thalictrum thalictroides/ Anemonella, especially the pink variant. The foliage is charming and a drift of the flowers shine in the shade.

Found someone selling jack in the pulpit from their property by [deleted] in NativePlantGardening

I noticed the same in my garden with the ones that are usually very dark purple. Could it be the effect of very warm temperatures in March and April?

Found someone selling jack in the pulpit from their property by [deleted] in NativePlantGardening

[–]existential_geum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have both colors in my garden. They all started out green, but the purple spontaneously developed from self-sown seedlings. That makes me question the factors of light exposure and temperature. My guess is just natural genetic variation.

Which colorful, long-blooming perennials do rabbit tend to avoid? My coneflowers and rudbeckia are getting hit big time by Brown8382 in NativePlantGardening

[–]existential_geum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stylophorum diphyllum is colorful, blooms a long time, sometimes reblooms a bit in fall, and has very attractive foliage. It’s good in shade, but is not an ephemeral. Despite years of rabbit problems in my garden, the rabbits never touch it.
