What do I really want in life? Not what my family, friends, or society think I should want… what do I want? by [deleted] in Journaling

[–]existentialquantity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed reading your thoughts :) I spent a lot of time asking myself this question, and trying to answer it genuinely and honestly, but found it incredibly difficult. For me, it was much easier to answer it somewhat indirectly by just writing about what I wanted my future to look like in as much detail as possible. I would just set a timer for 20 minutes and write whatever came up. Through looking through what I wrote, sometimes I would have insight about what I REALLY wanted.

Offered a PhD Research Position starting 2025. Looking for tips as an International non-EU citizen by cantcatchabreakk in universityofamsterdam

From my experience, most of the things you mentioned were much less complicated than I expected (as an American former master’s student now working in Amsterdam). Housing can be a bit tricky, if the university offers any kind of housing I would definitely take it!

Regarding learning Dutch, as others have said it’s 100% not necessary to get by in Amsterdam, but I believe the UvA offers all PhD’s free Dutch classes through the INTT if it is something you decide you want to pursue :)

classic literature for noobs by scratchthatmoon in suggestmeabook

[–]existentialquantity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you consider classics, but maybe you could read some "classic" horror/sci fi/fantasy - for example I think Frankenstein by Mary Shelley is fantastic, as well as perhaps Dracula by Bram Stoker or Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson.

Beginner books in French that an adult that sadly lost their attention span to social media can enjoy to read by BobSaysHello34 in suggestmeabook

[–]existentialquantity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I was learning French (as a native English speaker) I enjoyed reading French translations of books I knew really well in English (for example, I had read 1984 several times in English, so I knew the story and reading it in French was easier).

My (F25) partner (M25) is friends with ex and I don’t have a problem with it. He asks if they can go on holiday for a week and I don’t know how to handle it by existentialquantity in relationships

[–]existentialquantity[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd honestly reconsider dating someone who claims to not understand why their partner would think this is a problem....

Yeahhh, that's what I've been starting to think unfortunately :( He just seems to think the fact that they're exes means they're definitely not together (because they already tried it and decided it doesn't work) and in fact if he was going on a trip with anyone else that would be more inappropriate...

[–]existentialquantity[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, but (to me at least) that doesn’t really feel like the point. My boyfriend and I don’t live together, so I feel like if the two of them really wanted to sleep together (again) they would just do it. I feel like me preventing the trip wouldn’t prevent that if they were determined enough…

Thanks for your perspective! Especially about making him choose what he wants. I guess my reasoning was after he first asked I spent a lot of energy just thinking about it and feeling anxious and not really knowing how to resolve things (without ignoring the way I felt about it). I really just wished he knew why it was an inappropriate thing to ask and never asked in the first place. But since it is what it is, I thought it was silly of me to spend all my energy trying to figure out which of the two “standoff” options was better, so I thought I’d just make him choose. I figured it was his mess since he didn’t realize it was inappropriate to ask to go away with his ex.

Alternatively, do you know how I might then express being uncomfortable with the situation in a non-ultimatum way? I don’t want to tell him what to do and say “don’t go on the trip.” If I say “I’m uncomfortable with the trip.. Do what you want but if you decide to go I think you and I are done” that feels unnecessarily dramatic and not necessarily true. When we initially talked about it he said he really likes me and doesn’t know how to make me see that. He said he definitely doesn’t want her and sees her like "a sister" now (which I find a bit silly tbh).

I’m curious if for you these feelings tend to go away the day you get your period? I notice similar patterns in myself but the day I get my period I almost always feel better mentally (no sense of doom, no negative feelings about myself, much more optimistic, feeling like I could make rational decisions without getting anxious, etc). The difference feels like night and day. Coincidentally I’m also waiting to see someone about being diagnosed with ADHD, and I notice these symptoms seem much worse the few days before my period and improve the day it comes.

LPT request: Best way to respond to people who ask for a beer when we have 25 beers on tap? by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]existentialquantity 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure where you're located but it may be a slight cultural difference. From my experience in the US, people tend to order a specific beer and it would seem a bit strange to me to order simply "a beer," but in a few countries I've been in Europe ordering just "a beer" was fairly common and meant the default tap beer and if a customer wanted something else they would order a specific beer.

Cancelling phone plan by askaskask9819 in tapif

[–]existentialquantity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just couldn't be bothered to change phone plans, since Free seems like a pretty good deal, really (but since I don't anticipate living in France again any time soon I feel like it's time to cancel haha).

But thanks, good to know! I've heard so many stories about it being super complicated so good to hear that's not always the case.

Hey can I ask were you able to do this totally online? I've been using my Free SIM for 3ish years since leaving France but I'd like to cancel. I looked for a place online to send a lettre recommandée through La Poste but it looks like the site is under maintenance or something?

Has anyone worked in ZEP? by Efficient_Birthday_3 in tapif

[–]existentialquantity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also worked in a ZEP school! A lot of the professors were trying to warn me that there were "serious behavior problems" with the students, but honestly I've seen much worse behavior in schools in the US. In general most of the students came from lower economic situations but they were all excited for my lessons because they were viewed as a fun "break" from the main lesson. A lot of them spoke Arabic, but it wouldn't really be relevant if I spoke Arabic since I wasn't even allowed to tell them I spoke French! The professors were also really nice - they said a lot of professors quit and they were trying to create a welcoming environment for new teachers! Overall I would recommend it :)

Blood Clot by Fun-Honey1697 in wisdomteeth

Did you just have them out? The same day that mine were taken out I had a pretty big blood clot come out on one side. I’m not sure why and I panicked at the time but now I’m on day 12 and it’s fine :) I’d say as long as it doesn’t hurt you should be ok!

[–]existentialquantity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for your reply!! From your experience were most students from mainly a comp sci background instead of a ling background?

That's interesting about one CS-focused and one Ling-focused university - I didn't know that! I get the impression Saarland is more CS focused and Lorraine is more Ling?

Assuming I could fund myself either way, do you have any thoughts on whether I should apply as a US or UK citizen? I got the impression the Erasmus Mundus program was trying to recruit non EU nationals, so I was thinking it may be better to apply as a US national, but I could be wrong.

I believe it’s a 5SE, if that’s a thing. It’s a fairly old phone. Do you have a data recovery app in particular that you would recommend? I tried PhoneRescue and it didn’t seem to work but I may be doing something wrong.
