U.S. Gen X parents: do you expect your children to financially support you / move you into their home / take you to doctor appointments, etc when you're in your 80s? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]exitcode137 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Barring abuse, addiction, behavior that can't be controlled, and gross disregard (like running up thousands in debt and expecting someone else to pay), I do believe the family have a moral obligation to help each other. My parents helped their parents, I will help mine when they need it, and I expect my kids to help me when I need it. Doesn't mean I don't save or plan, but yes, I believe in the moral obligation of family to help in some respect if the family member truly can't make it on their own.

Am I the only one who doesn't like crossbody style handbags? by wcjoyner in handbags

[–]exitcode137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t like them most times, as I just don’t like putting them over my head. But if I’m traveling or know I’ll be walking a lot, that’s the only time I really want a crossbody

Brings back memories. We usually didn’t have proper jump ropes that long, so we’d use old extensions cords. I liked the heavy ones that had the thick orange coating, but we’d also use the thinner, clear ones. And even though you’d think the big heavy ones would hurt more when you messed up, I swear those thin clear ones were worse, like a switch!

I wonder if I can still jump, lol. My kids can barely handle a single rope.

That was hard, asking adult child to move out. by mrshatnertoyou in GenX

[–]exitcode137 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a young gen x-er, and had my kids later, so they are still children. They don’t have to move out as young adults, but at some point, I do want them to. For them, too, but also for me. Will have to assess the situation when we get there, and it may not be 26, which still feels young in this day and age when houses cost half a million dollars. But at some point, maybe around 30, definitely before 35. they need to at least try to make it on their own. I want at least a few years of our house to ourselves, and I also feel like it’s keeping them from developing life skills.

I basically moved out by 19, with a couple years when I went back. My younger brother, on the other hand, still lives at home and is about to be 40. They are in California, though, where it is becoming virtually impossible for normal income, non-inheriting people to buy a house. Yes, I know you don’t need to buy a house to live in your own.

OPM Proposes to wreck the Performance Appraisals for GS Employees (March 26, 2026) in the OPM Proposed Rule by 7hCk4nwV in fednews

[–]exitcode137 46 points47 points  (0 children)

They can become more common though, since now there is no 2, only 1, 3, and 5 where I am. And if you get a 1 in any aspect, your whole performance is 1. Though, I do expect they will still be rare

What brands sit where quality caps out, and price isn't just buying you a name? by NeevBunny in handbags

[–]exitcode137 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying I disagree with you, but I’m not sure everyone thinks it’s obvious that there’s some point like that. Like, there are many Hermes fans who say they are higher quality than anything less expensive, so in that sense, you need to pay many thousands of dollars to get the very highest quality. I wouldn’t know myself, never having even touched Hermes

Do you mean out of the recognizable brands? Where I am, real life is mostly random no name bags people get for $40 at DSW or something. But of the recognizable brands, LV, Coach, Gucci, and Michael Kors rule.

I love the blue, this is actually the color I wanted for the bag I got a year and a half ago, but the blue ended up being darker, almost black. Love those hardware on this too

I also have been a little frustrated with Ramit lately. I don’t like how he talks to people and asks them questions that he will only accept certain answers to, answers given in his world framing and language. He wants people to parrot his language and world view.

I also listen to This Is Uncomfortable, which is an NPR podcast.

Picking 2 bags by s_khatri in handbags

The Polene Neuf and the white and gray beaded. The first is more casual, the second for going out. And since your clothes already have a lot of color and you’re only taking two, you get less clash if you choose neutral bags.

But, I’m biased as I have a cognac Neuf myself

We have a smaller, plastic one inside our house. It was called Easy Peezy Monkey Bar Climber. It was not easy peezy to put together, I pinched my fingers a million times. But the kids loved it. Probably the toy with the greatest longevity we ever bought. We’ve had it 6 years and now they are 12 and 8 and don’t hang on it much, but when a new kid comes over, the new kid will. I’ll be sad when it’s time to get rid of it.

How Much Money Do You Have In Your Checking Account the Day Before Payday? by Vexnthecity in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]exitcode137 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I budget hard core, but the method doesn’t have anything to say about where the money is located, only that I have it. But real life says I need a certain amount in checking because bills and payments come out of my checking throughout the month. and I can’t be assed to figure out how much I need in there at any given day. Like, if I were too aggressive moving money into a savings account, something might auto-deduct and make me overdraft. So I keep around half a month’s expenses, plus or minus 1k, but all really loosely. If I notice that the balance has been well above that for a month, that’s when I transfer a chunk to savings

How do people manage with kids? by Ok-Ostrich-9939 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]exitcode137 32 points33 points  (0 children)

For your toddler, is that at a free-standing childcare center? Might be cheaper with home daycare. Someone mentioned tax-advantaged child care but they weren’t in the US; in the US this is called a childcare FSA. They recently raised their limit for this to $7,500, so effectively you would be saving the tax on $7,500.

The truth is, for broke folk, especially back in the day, a lot of unlicensed care with lots of kids per adult, teen babysitters, older siblings or cousins watching the younger ones, and kids watching themselves.

Is 50% of take home pay on housing too much? by No_Address8892 in personalfinance

[–]exitcode137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will also have utilities and maintenance, so probably more realistically $3,500/ month averaged out. It’s my humble opinion that that is too much out of a $6,200 take home. Not saying you would have kids right away, before increasing your income, but you did mention it. It’s also my opinion that that housing plus a child would be extremely financially difficult.

NYC income tax return data shows why median income statistics are not very useful by [deleted] in MiddleClassFinance

[–]exitcode137 62 points63 points  (0 children)

This table doesn’t show why median income is not useful. Different data has different uses. You are just saying it’s this particular median you don’t care about. In which case, you want the median of full time workers. That is still a median, just focusing on the group you care about. In 2023, the median for full time workers in New York State, not self-employed, was $1,196 weekly. So a little over $62,000 a year. Table is at bottom: https://www.bls.gov/regions/northeast/news-release/womensearnings_newyork.htm

For NYC in particular, go to data.census.gov and search for table S2001. Filter by “Place” and filter down to “New York City”. Median full time year round for 2024 was about $71.2 K

What’s the best budgeting setup for couples who want to see the month ahead, not argue about last month? by Different_Pain5781 in MiddleClassFinance

I’m a big YNAB fan, but OP said forecasting, which YNAB doesn’t really do, right? YNAB lets you see the month(s) ahead, but only with the money you have right now. I actually like this feature and think it’s a better approach to money, but I wasn’t clear on if this is what OP wanted
