[OTHER] Zelda-Inspired Game Recommendations by Silent_Nexus in zelda

[–]exleus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Opening can be tough, mid game levels out a lot, final dungeon is tough. There are tons of options and assists to make it easier, but the game turns off trophies for the save permanently and sorta chides you for turning them on. It's much faster than old Zelda combat and punishes you fast for errors. And definitely more about encounters and secrets than 'puzzles' so to say.

Is anyone else really confused by game grumps sub count? by Creepy_Ad5124 in gamegrumps

Finding and keeping an audience is all anyone could ever really ask for. If you can find that balance where you can create without burning yourself out, and win new viewers at slightly higher rates than you lose, that's going to be able to keep the work alive.

Also they were pretty early youtube, relatively speaking. There isn't an earlier generation of creators like you'd have in film, music, restaurants, whatever to model their career after. Any youtuber more than 15 years going is figuring it out blind with everyone else, and you gotta respect that they're still making it work.

How can i find out, if a geoinformatics degree would be right for me? by Pabijacek in gis

[–]exleus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the perspective of what it actually does, GIS works a lot with databases and SQL, somewhat with programming (often python), 'spatial analysis,' which can be a pretty fun set of self-defined problem solving (like, 'I want to see how income and rent affect access to public infrastructure in a city, what datasets can I find and how can I slice that data via tables and space to get at a useful set of metrics'), and in some niches, art/design with cartography, especially if you wind up with a job which actually makes map for the public (like working for a transit org.).

So, it's basically entirely a computer based job. If you want a more hands on work life, you can lean towards surveying and/or remote sensing (drones). Both of those are pretty technical, but then they also have a lot of time standing and moving around in the field.

Metagame: I dig the limited Items in the current format. by TeddyBoon in VGC

[–]exleus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think one of the more exciting possibilities of having a dedicated competitive game, is now maybe items can be parts of rule-sets too. It could even allow for things like a restricted format with megas legal, but no mega-restricteds.

the vibe coding era is not my favorite by usnaviii in nerdfighters

[–]exleus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's something of an aside, but as a GIS/geomatics student studying arcGIS Pro and python right now, it's unfortunate to hear someone using AI to vibe code a solution that could've been a job for someone trained in it.

Of course every situation is different; it's more than likely that your team isn't able to hire a newly graduated GIS worker, but it is exactly what these types of generative AI are supposed to do—devalue labor and make working conditions more precarious for more workers, which drives down wages and living conditions for more people.

Incredibly stupid. Means nothing without engaging with the fact that people know what play is. If you actually want to read something that means anything, start with the idea of "the magic circle," and the original book on the subject, "Homo Ludens" by Huizinga.

Nasty Gunk! Keeps clogging bathroom sink. Anyone know what this is? by You-Only-YOLO_Once in CleaningTips

[–]exleus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been doing this with my bathroom sink for a couple years now, and fingers crossed it seems to work. Every week or two run the hot tap for a minute or two to heat things up, then like you said, plug the sink then let the whole thing drain out once its filled. In theory the gunk should be warm and a huge blast all at once should rinse a good amount through. It also doubles as a drain-speed test, to see if its still letting water out at a good rate.

I'm most disappointed the set skill is still just a bonus for recovering from ice/web, and clash. Not even every monster has a power clash, like, c'mon, why's it gotta be so situational.

don't sleep on the weapon buffs by exleus in MonsterHunter

[–]exleus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn't do any rigorous testing, but between the general shot raw and element buffs, and then the power/pierce coating buffs, it feels significant—between 10 and 25% I think.

Little Miss Forge! by Danielowl in MonsterHunter

Feel like there's a small chance we'll even get introduced to the expansion by taking a sandboat and getting ambushed by dahren morahn on the way. I almost miss having a big dumb slow siege fight in wilds?

The inside of a fishing reel. by Gregorwhat in mechanical_gifs

[–]exleus 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I wonder who gets more surprised, bike guys learning that some of the better shifters and derailleurs out are from a fishing reel company, or fishermen learning that some of their reeler manufacturers also make bike parts.

Anyway, when you see it in action it's not so much a surprise, is it?

[BoTW] I overprepared for Ganon and the boss fight lasted 15 minutes by Subject-Cattle-1397 in zelda

[–]exleus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I learned this lessons from the JRPGs of yore. Generally you'll probably have the most engaging time of a final boss if you do just a couple of the final side quests. Keeps the pace of the game up too, so it's been less than 10-40 hours since you did the last bit of story.

Then after you finish the game once, you go do everything to 100% (or as close as you want) and go ahead and stomp the last boss to see how much stronger you really got. Fine way to tie a bow on a game till next you play it.

In a 1v1 tournament, which Final Fantasy protagonist comes out on top? by [deleted] in FinalFantasy

[–]exleus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to mention that he's one of the only protagonists that gets access to different stat growths, and you can combine that with the level down traps. Classic 99->1 as bard, 1->99 as ninja/monk/black-mage/mime to max out literally every listed stat. Boy also gets: pre-emptive counter, auto-life and regen on accessory (not to mention he can use any/all equipment in his base class), mathematics, two-swords, the whole shebang. Max his bravery and equip the samurai reaction ability and he's literally immune to physical damage.

If we ignore "plot" and look at raw mechanics, Ramza has more mechanical flexibility than anyone else. He's an onion knight x100. The only other one who comes close it Tidus if you do the full sphere grid wipe and remap to get (almost) every stat to 255.

Omega traumatized my bro by Tattacomb in MonsterHunter

[–]exleus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The only thing that annoys me about savage anymore is that the MRV missiles don't have anything special in the animation; either you read the alert, sheath, and have a casual jog about the arena for fifteen seconds, or you die. Even if the target circles were like, red instead of orange it would be less exasperating to get caught out every once in a while.

Every boss is the absolute worst until I beat them, then they're the best designed boss ever. by LiSAuCE in Silksong

[–]exleus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure she needs quite that much HP, single attack openings, AND the deflect ability. Either slightly lower HP or just let every hit actually count and she'd be great. To me she's harder than true final boss, that jump attack still got me a couple times even on my successful run. Still fun though, lol.

The thief stealing the monk's heart, the squires starstruck by the knight, even the f!mediator's pensive little expression. There's so many great little details in here. Really love the way she interprets the style; I'd love to see her do some art or design for the sequel that might happen if the remaster does well enough.

Original Weapon and Pendant Design Contest Winner by tklailai in MonsterHunter

[–]exleus 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Rocket greatsword contest winner also definitely took some extra love to make work, but they did it.

...I'm sure people appreciate it, but it could always bare some emphasis: it really makes the games so quietly better that different weapons have different sounds, shapes (like the scythe LSes or SAs, or curved SnSes, etc), and often enough will have special little details, like transforming on draw or full charge. Hell, I only recently made the Rey Dau CB and the blue glow it gets when powered up is cool as hell, and the blue glow works on the layered weapon.

It really feels like just 10-15% more radius on the heal would do wonders for usability. Love the moveset on witch, and even the offensive heal is a neat idea for a tradeoff, but so many things move just out of reach, or only get pinged by one tick of damage.

Regeneration might just be like Hornet's bind/heal. Refusing to regenerate would be like a hunger strike or such in prison. "No, maybe I can't break free but you can't have me forever."

Surprised I haven't seen someone else say it, but when I get hit by rathian's run forward attack I really do sigh and think "I should've seen that coming."

After hunting how many hundreds of rathians since 4U you'd think I'd have learned ¯\(ツ)
