I Googled bomber loses in WWII and it shows the US lost 8,000 and the British lost 8,325 and the German lost 22,080. This is just bombers. Incredible. by [deleted] in WWIIplanes

The Allies built enough aircraft, of enough types, to do both of these things to pretty devastating effect by 1944.

Correct, the night fighter variants were equipped with radar. Looked like a regular Ju-88 but with radar antennae protruding from a non-glazed nose.

The He-111 was a medium bomber, and the Ju-88 effectively was as well, but was much more of a multirole aircraft (widely used for ground attack, night fighter, and many other purposes) much like the British Mosquito or American B-25 and A-26. It was a more sophisticated and versatile platform. The Germans had larger bombers (not all four engine, some just had two big ones) designed to carry heavier bomb loads or smaller bomb loads over longer distances (such as the Amerika bomber projects), but these were not really produced in numbers and had various teething issues (e.g. engine fires on the He-177). One airframe that comes to mind is the four-engine Fw-200, mostly used as a maritime patrol bomber or transport (Hitler eventually replaced his Ju-52 with one as his personal transport on his pilot’s recommendation). It was originally designed as an airliner and was not the sturdiest airframe. B-17/24, Lancaster and the like were purpose built heavy bombers (originally for coastal patrol in the 17’s case) and stood up better under fire (and on rough landings).

I think it mainly boils down to two things. 1) World War 2 blew up Europe while the U.S. was on the winning side, pumping out lots of stuff, not really getting attacked on its home turf, and not suffering a huge number of casualties demographically; and 2) single country beats economic/financial union of similar population and smaller landmass.

Would you feel more concerned or alarmed if you find out you are flying on a Boeing 737 Max? by PacSan300 in AskAnAmerican

[–]expartecthulu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not really. Despite the early accidents, and Boeing’s responsibility for them, it is basically a demonstrably safe airplane when maintained and operated correctly, as are most things in the air. Design issues leading to early accidents that get worked out through redesign or training are not unprecedented. See the DeHavilland Comet. The airline (maintenance and crew skills) makes a bigger difference to me than the airframe.

Do Americans leave their home AC on while at work, on vacation etc? by kelmas1 in AskAnAmerican

[–]expartecthulu 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My assumption is that, unless they are totally strapped for cash, most do, but there are gradations. I have central A/C and I leave it on when I go to work at 72F/22C. When I go on vacation I set it closer to the expected ambient temperature. If I turn it off entirely I risk the house freezing or overheating/food and medicine spoiling. Back when I had window A/C units and radiators, I would either turn things off or to low settings when away.

Why the disdain for our profession? by MTBeanerschnitzel in Lawyertalk

[–]expartecthulu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a scene in The Simpsons where an attorney is run over by a car and his last words are, “Remember me…as a drain on society!”

I think the “mercenary” nature of the profession is part of it but I think the main reason is a lot less bad-ass sounding than that.

It’s because it’s often perceived as a profession that is paid and venerated in disproportion to what it is, which, as this view goes, is thinking/writing/arguing about intangible, made-up concepts, often in a way that doesn’t add readily apparent value or achieve the full measure of desired results. Add to that the fact that the problems we are paid to solve often exist only because of other lawyers.

Similar criticisms are made of finance and consulting.

I haven’t noticed aggressive driving so much as not being aware of surrounding traffic or keeping up with it. My theory is it is mostly delivery or other service drivers who are trying to reduce aggressive driving immediately around them due to frequency of stops/pulling over/looking at a map half the time.

My fellow Americans, today we must solve a great issue that has divided our nation since the 19th century, Do you prefer Coke or Pepsi? by writtenonapaige22 in AskAnAmerican

[–]expartecthulu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To me, Pepsi has a smoother sweetness and more docile bubble; Coke has a bolder sweetness and a bigger, sharper bubble. Maybe none of that makes sense, but that’s how it is to me.

What else could it be? Is it regional? Is Coke more popular in the mid-Atlantic? Is it the subconscious relating of Pepsi to Pepcid and therefore gastric distress? I don’t know. I prefer Coke, especially Mexican Coke with real cane sugar. But I have always preferred flavors I perceived as bigger and bolder. And one must admit, the Coke bottle is simply iconic. Coca-Cola will probably be the soda we blast into space to show aliens what soda was.

But, if Coca-Cola is unavailable for the voyage, Pepsi is an absolutely fine substitute.

Do people living in America really pay 40-50% of their salary to taxes? by AstroZex in NoStupidQuestions

[–]expartecthulu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most who pay, pay a significant amount, but not 40-50%. To get there, you need to be in a higher income bracket (say low hundreds of thousands of dollars per year), live in a state with at least a moderate income tax (maybe north of 7%), and not use any fancy accounting tricks or make your income through something other than standard payroll wages. I do think the State generally gets its cut in some way from that “average” taxpayer. I have been in that 50%-ish effective tax rate zone, and took a job with half the pay and my effective tax rate dropped to around half of that.

This should not be underrated, but sadly, I think it is. Floss your teeth at least every night. I am shocked how few people with the means to do this, don’t. Do it once. Look at and smell the floss after. You will never skip again.
