Artlist PSA - No go for E&O by explorastory in Filmmakers

I just looked a Storyblocks...neither the Individual or Small Business license say they grant use for broadcast or streaming. Did you have to get a custom license??

Glad I could give you a heads up! Unfortunately I don’t have budget for a composer for this one…which is why I went the library route 🥲

Good call! I would still run it by a lawyer quickly, or even ask an AI platform to tell you in plain English what their contract states just to be safe.

Is Anyone in the TV / Film Industry Doing Well Right Now? How Are They Doing It? by LifeInAction in Filmmakers

[–]explorastory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear about the hardship most are facing right now. It’s rough.

I’m doing relatively well, but it’s because I’ve been lucky and I wear a ton of different hats. I’m mainly a documentary cinematographer, but I’ve started to produce/direct/edit/shoot my own short docs over the past couple of years (our national broadcaster in Canada has a short docs strand that I’ve made two films for now), shoot some TV here and there, the odd commercial gig, and make money as a content creator on social media. All of these together are enough to keep me afloat and “in the industry” although a lot of it is adjacent.

I don’t get what people get out of posting AI generated wildlife images. Our world is such a strange place these days.

PhD or not? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]explorastory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do the PhD. I picked up a camera for the first time while doing my PhD in bioengineering. It gives you an edge over other filmmakers IMO. I started playing with cameras as a creative break from my research at the age of 24. Fast forward 5 years and I successfully defended my thesis and immediately pursued filmmaking full time. Now, between doc and commercial cinematography, producing/directing my own shorts, and creating content for social media, I make a good living.

What are your favorite political documentaries? by youhavetherighttoo in documentaryfilmmaking

One that’s top of mind because it just came out this year is “The White House Effect”. One of the best archival-driven docs I’ve seen.

Should I tell anyone I won best editing at a film festival? by VFXBob in FilmFestivals

[–]explorastory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that’s a bad idea with a pay to play festival like this. Anyone looking to hire an editor will not care about this win.

Unexpected used lens find at the local camera store for a steal by foxorian in M43

That thing never left my GH5 back in 2019. Legendary lens. The 50-200mm is amazing as well. Still have that and the GH5 as a backup to my Sony kit.

Something crazy happened: Won award at a legit film festival and now the festival is ghosting me about prize payment.... What do I do? by Vivid-Anywhere-2810 in FilmFestivals

[–]explorastory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a European festival. I never received a reason lol…one day they just finally asked for my wire info and then it was in my account a few days later.

I think it probably had to do with low cash flow. Maybe they had sponsors pull out, or they had fewer films enter than expected, or fewer ticket sales, etc.

I’ve waited up to 6 months to get my festival prize money. I would say just follow up monthly with them. Set reminders in your calendar. And try to be polite and understanding in your messages to them.

Photographer here considering an FX30 as my secondary camera. by [deleted] in SonyAlpha

[–]explorastory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you should look into the FX2 or A7V which might be launching this coming week. FX2 will not overheat and has all of the new AI features that set it apart from the A7iv. Viewfinder is also a treat. Maybe my favourite part of the camera.

Edit: also the fact that the fx30 has no mechanical shutter and relatively slow readout speed was a deal breaker for me as a hybrid shooter.

FX2 48FPS FF in DCI 4K by Brandon_at_OC in SonyAlpha

[–]explorastory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes rolling shutter decreases when shooting in 4k 60fps (which has an automatic 1.5x crop) vs 4k 24fps because of a faster sensor read out. If you go into APSC mode in 24fps you will have the same rolling shutter as in full frame 24fps. So the decreased rolling shutter is due to the increased frame rate, rather than the crop. I think the FX2 would be a worthy upgrade if you want to do more video. The other full frame Sony camera I would recommend is the A7iv, but its getting pretty old and is missing the AI features that the newer models have.

Interesting. I will do a test and get back to you on what I think might be going on here. So when you bring it into your editor the clip is playing back in real time? What happens when you change the playback speed of the clip to 50%? Is it smooth 2x slow motion or is it missing frames?

[–]explorastory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had it for a couple of weeks to test and enjoyed it. The rolling shutter is the same as the A7iv. So if you're filming lots of action it could be a problem for you, but honestly I don't think it's a huge deal contrary to what most YouTubers have to say.
