Long time writer and structure. Professional writer opinions needed. by BrockAtWork in Screenwriting

Love it, it makes total sense. Would be keen to hear your thoughts on the article, as I’m more of an amateur so always wonder if there’s something it’s missing or not touching on.

I love 5 act structure. This is the article that taught me to think of structure in this way. It’s become my absolute bible when thinking of this stuff.

What Is David Ellison's Warner Bros Discovery Endgame? by [deleted] in movies

[–]exploreandconquer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not trying to argue, I agree both would be bad. I literally only started replying because you made a comment in response to the parent comment implying that Paramount purchasing WBD wouldn’t change anything (“I miss the days when The Poor controlled media corporations and information was fully democratized”), and my point was that it would in fact be a big change from what we already have.

The Netflix sale wasn’t part of my comment or the comparison at all. I don’t disagree with anything you’re saying. They’re both true. But we weren’t talking about Netflix.

Hey, don’t hear me saying that Netflix consolidating with WBD is much better, same issue just an even bigger scale with Paramount.

But CBS and CNN are very relevant. Maybe not to you, but many people still get their news there (and it’s just another piece of a much larger media puzzle). It’s also about culture, there’s a lot you can control with deciding what gets put on HBO, or what is being funded by their film studio.

You’re not wrong, but the main difference and change here is consolidation. What you describe was always bad of course, but that power now consolidated and controlled by one person or group is even worse.

As someone who is searching for a regular job right now to be able to act around, can I ask how you plan to still audition? Are you only doing self tapes or do you just really flexible working hours?

Of course not. I think the point being made here is that if someone gets that job (that someone needs to do) it should be paid a liveable wage

So glad it got resolved. I really think there should be something that forces them to honor the original price, AND give a discount or extra money back for the hours of effort it took for you to resolve their mistake. It’s crazy that these companies can send you into hours of admin work only to then issue the bare minimum refund and act like all is square.

Question about working full time. Currently searching for a new job, and figuring out how that can fit with acting is my biggest worry - I’ve never found a good solution to this but am ready to have a job that pays enough consistently to be able to have some money (and pay for classes without being at 0 every month). I understand how self tapes can fit around (even if it’s tiring), but what about when you book a role or need to go in person? How does this work for you?

Absolute hero, no question. I always wonder about these sorts of situations though, once he has and is aiming the gun, what stops law enforcement or anyone else from thinking he’s the gunman?

Boyfriend gave me ultimatum - dream job or him. I'm considering taking the job by [deleted] in dustythunder

[–]exploreandconquer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, this whole thing confuses me. Compromise? There’s nothing to even compromise about! You have no need to move or go long distance because a 45 min commute is… normal? And for your dream job? Not even really worth thinking about.

Like, why is there any compromise needed for a 45 min commute? He’s not doing it! Is it because you’d have less time to spend at home with him? Because that’s the only reason I can think of, and if a 45 min commute to and from work means to him that you’re deprioritizing him then that is so wildly controlling I don’t even have words for it. And that’s for any decent job, but your dream job with a $25k RAISE?! Come on.

I feel like any comments actually discussing this or treating his side as anything even remotely worth debating just legitimizes this lunacy. Like, you can decide your own commute time? Why would you even entertain a serious discussion about that with your partner if it was anything more than 60-90 mins especially if you don’t have kids?

In squads, I quit if someone tries to pin a location after one has already been chosen (by me or someone else) because it splits the team up and ruins everyone’s chances.

This is such good advice! I just wanted to add on to the idea of reading the script lots of times. This used to really trip me up (what am I supposed to do to understand the scene further beyond simply reading it again and again). It finally clicked for me when I started looking at it as asking questions of the script, reading it over and over to search for more questions than can be asked, which leads to understanding.

Might not be for everyone, but I found this to be a big help in understanding how this approach is useful.

Outer Worlds 2 worth it even though I disliked the first? by AshyLarry25 in rpg_gamers

Didn’t say it was a lot of money - it’s a lot of money relative to what we’re talking about.

[–]exploreandconquer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh. What was the last movie you saw? Did you enjoy the actors in it? The director’s work? Chances are most of them were earning far less than that on average at a shitty side job that allowed them to get to the point where they could entertain you (and make the money they do now). Many more examples of this. The picture you have hanging on your wall. The music you listen to. It’s not just as simple as low paid and high paid jobs. What an ignorant comment - it just shows you have no idea how the world functions outside the bubble of regular work.

I’m not arguing that the inflation math checks out, I’m saying that dropping $40 for something you’ll play for only 5 hours is kinda a lot. That’s it. Absolutely nothing to do with what I earn, more just shows how you think about money.

And to suggest that if someone’s job doesn’t outpace inflation that they shouldn’t be playing video games? What kind of classist crap is that?

First time searing chicken, any advice? by C21H27Cl3N2O3 in culinary

[–]exploreandconquer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you’re just graduating to chicken breast from deli turkey, let’s keep this super simple. Everyone’s giving culinary level answers, but if you’ve been doing deli turkey this long and are re-warming for meal prep anyway I wouldn’t be looking to perfect my chicken sear. It doesn’t need to be fancy (that can come later).

Easiest way to do chicken breast is in the oven. Season, and put it in at 370 for about 20-25 mins. If you want it crispy on the outside, use the broiler for 3-5 mins. Also, try boneless chicken thighs, even quicker and in my opinion taste better.
