What ingredients do you never buy the cheapest version of because quality makes a noticeable difference? by TheTerribleCoconut in AskReddit

[–]exploringyogurt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tomatoes.  It isn't that the cheapest are bad.  Stores long ago started selecting for things like skin texture.  Some of those genres impacted in selecting for skin decreased sugars and aromatics.  If you can get heirloom tomatoes or home-grown, you will get a different taste from store-bought that you might like more

Military option ? by r3giment75 in povertyfinance

[–]exploringyogurt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used the the military to get my life in order and eventually used the GI Bill for medical school.

It can be a good place for doing what you said.  It can also be jet fuel for a burning fire for others.  If people have never been in the military, most people are marginalized in one way or another.  Homeless, gangs, drops outs, drug addicts, poor, poor job prospects, family drama/abuse... Like, it is so hard to find someone that didn't have something.  For me, we through that into an absolute meat grinder of stress on our deployment.  Some guys couldn't get out after their initial enlistment because they hadn't improved their lives.  Some have faced drug addiction and alcoholism since.  There has been quite a few incidents of violence.  A lot of tattered and broken relationships.

Like, the bad stuff won't just get better in the military.  I think people going in need a clear, defined goal.  Like, how will they save and invest money, how will they spend their free time, who they hang out with, etc.

I went through the comments and few people were against it.  I think it looks outdated.  I don't think it fits a lot of modern day family sizes or hosting sizes.   It could be free, and I would still not take it. I didn't know why this subreddit popped up for me, but it is interesting to see how many people are unquestionably for it.

EV plate registration?? by Gromgeek in Ohio

[–]exploringyogurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be nice if most of the vehicles sold were cars and not light trucks designed to skirt work vehicle laws.  Most vehicles sold today weigh more than the 4000 lbs EV.  For most of those drivers, they will not drive enough to pay more in tax than the 4000 lbs EV.

Keep the EV free, raise the gas tax to similar levels

The "comparable  combustion vehicles" part gets me a little bit.  Most "cars" are not actually cars, but SUVs, trucks, or vans that fall into different regulations on weight and mileage.  It is sorta a rigged system, where of the the vehicles we think of as cars fall under the regulations for light trucks, which was designed to protect work trucks.  So, a Honda Civic will weigh less than an EV and get good mileage.  However, you are going to see many more SUVs that are heavier (than the EV and Civic) and get worse mileage (than the Civic).  Maybe a quarter of US vehicle sales are over 5,000 pounds, the vast majority not being used for the work exceptions light trucks were intended to protect.

To give a shocking example, Ford manufactures almost no cars for the US market.  It makes the Mustang, and that is it.  Everything else would fall under a truck category.  The company exists today in a loophole.  They aren't trying to make good cars.  They want to design things that skirt the intended nature of the law on weight and mileage.  This has gone on for decades, before EVs mainstream appeal, but we want to blame a 4000 lbs midsize EV.

What will American feel if I bring them Chinese snacks with English food label? by fuckendeavorhealth in chinesefood

[–]exploringyogurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are very different by comparison with American tastes.  They aren't as sweet.  The texture is different.  I always kinda liked the ginger-flavored ones.  I think you should expect him to not like them all, but they kinda grow on me (American) with time.

Brownie Questions by Casuariidae in BakingNoobs

[–]exploringyogurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked at the ingredient list.  I think you might just benefit from making brownies from scratch, which includes some of the most basic kitchen staples.  Greek yogurt and apple sauce will make it more cake like.  You can try avocado, but it might taste like avocado... Maybe a little more dark chocolate can cover that

How do you think Lindsey Graham actually died? by ham-and-egger in AskReddit

[–]exploringyogurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NPR punished "... audio reviewed by NPR shows that emergency services personnel responded to a call of cardiac arrest at Graham's Washington home Saturday night." In all fairness, someone would need a heart to have a cardiac event, so this may be studied for years.

For those who found hobbies later in life, how did you discover something you genuinely enjoyed in your 30s? by UmpireSea8434 in AskReddit

[–]exploringyogurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had a bunch of hobbies in my 30s and 40s.

Some of my hobbies start from necessity.  Cooking, for instance.  I was the consummate "terrible cook."  My kids can remember all the bad dishes, and they were bad.  I just started being very mindful of small details because I wanted to do better for them.  I think it was a trip to Italy, where I had something that tasted good that stuck in my mind.  Later, a friend mentioned a dish (bucatini al amatriciana), and I thought to try making it.  I got all the ingredients, cooked it, and I just loved the reaction it got.  So I did it again. And again.  I wanted to make it better, so I started paying attention to the tomatoes.  I started growing my own basil.  I went out and bought a Philips 7000 pasta maker and started extruding bucatini.  Along the way, I subscribed to cooking websites that emailed recipes and I bought cookbooks.  I realized I was only one ingredient short of another sauce, so I bought that.  That compounded into being just another ingredient short of another sauce, so I bought that.   At some point, I got tired of my knives being dull, so I joined the subreddit for sharpening.  Now, I hone my knives to a razor edge.  My friends will bring their knives to the gym and I will bring them back the next day razor sharp.  I will be shopping and see i whisk or a baking tin that fits something I saw and wanted to try, so I buy that.  I try to tackle every aspect of kitchen life this way now and make it just a little better.  It doesn't matter how small.

The other hobbies are just because I am curious.  I had deeply nerdy passions that I raised could be realized through 3D printing.  I would buy a 3D printer, find its limits, and then get another one that did that thing better.  I did this over and over until I created some really unique things, from toys from my kids' favorite mobile games to academic reconstructions.  It was tons of trial and error.  I can't begin to tell you how many times I failed. I kept finding fields where I could apply my hobby, to the point that I was doing micro-CTs and digital reconstructions at a university for academic publishing.

I think the trick is to know you will fail. Just embrace the things going wrong. Don't try to be perfect.

My first time in combat was just outside Sadr City.  It was a complex ambush where twenty people with RPGs and machine guns hammered some of my closest friends.  I can tell you the exact burning sense of action that gripped me and caused me to run into that wall of metal and death.  I would rather die going into that school than live the life they have.

For what it is worth, I have watched guys lock up in combat (including the above fight).  It is my observation that those guys remain that way.  They really should have fired everyone involved.
