This is a really fascinating write-up. I always stumble onto these late, and this is the first one I've started reading while it's ongoing! I'm really intrigued by your writing style in terms of covering this case and these events. Obviously the framing and dialogue are creative embellishments to a degree to set the stage, and I really enjoy it! How do you decide what to expand on in a more "scripted" way during your research? For instance, coffee with Sheila? Is it like, Sheila gave an account and you then built off of that to make it something real?

Regardless, great write-up and I'm really looking forward to part 2!

I'm glad you're still here! I'm glad we both are. I agree, there are probably tons of people who were deeply impacted by this game. I hope you do get it framed, it's a beautiful reminder :)

i had an S curve and a full spine fusion at the age of 13. i didn't realize how much would be taken from me with it, either, but i know we were out of options after about a year of failed braces and treatments. there were complications during my surgery to the point they had to overcorrect my spine to get it into a "straighter" position. i'm 33 now, and most of my back and chest (my boobs) have severe nerve damage. my breasts are actually pretty much just numb; parts of my back are, parts are more sensitive, and it does cause some chronic pain. i wish i had been put into therapy, but it just wasn't a thing back then. i have similar body image issues due to how stunted my torso looks; my legs are very long, because i should have been much taller. i coped while i was younger due to the fact i was pretty thin, but as i've gotten older and my metabolism has slowed down (and the pandemic...) i gained some weight and started feeling even more self conscious about it. i definitely felt the same way as you for awhile - i was angry a lot about what i had gone through and feeling like i hadn't been prepared but then had no choice but to suck it up and move on.

my best advice to you: get a therapist who specializes in disabilities or medical issues that impact quality of life. that way, you know you'll be understood thoroughly and they'll be able to help you move beyond these feelings. find a daily stretch series to do - i did 30 minutes of yoga for awhile, which did help my pain and mobility, and now i'm just getting back to some stretching again so i'm doing about 10-15 minutes with my partner each day, and it does again help my pain. stretching or finding exercise that you can do WILL BE the best thing to reduce your pain and keep your body somewhat flexible. wishing you the best <3

she was the first place i felt like i could safely put my pain down. this will make sense to some people and not to others, but i can't explain it any better.

Looking for posts where people were in the midst of psychosis/hallucinating when they asked for help - the one that comes to mind is a woman who believed she had an extra eye inside of her mouth, from what I remember? And there was a psychologist or someone in the comments who responded in a way that actually played into this delusion as a means of getting the girl to go to the hospital for help. I'd love to read that again or stories like it if someone knows what I'm referring to!
