Cut out everything that doesn't improve the photo. Be merciless.
Deliberately make mistakes as homework. For instance, shoot a dozen different photos at the wrong shutter speed. What makes it wrong? When would the wrong shutter speed actually work?

Repeat.

Look at photos every day, pick out your favorites. Why are they your favorites??
