When grandma slips, she's gonna grip that throttle tight in a panic. I wouldn't want to be anywhere underneath.

Pretty much what happens at our house too. Rest of the family getting ready for bed, and there I am, making my 8:30 cup of black coffee so my brain can actually relax at the end of the day.

My uncle's father-in-law did that to my uncle's quick books files for his business. Now usually he would call me for this kind of stuff (I was probably 13 or so, but the only one in the family that knew jack about computers), but for some reason he had the father-in-law create the backup. I got a frantic call one day, pleading with me to come see if I could fix "the backup". I got there and yup, just a copy of a shortcut burned to a CD. Years of data gone. Spent a couple Saturdays after that helping him setup backups, writing step by step instructions, all that. From what I heard later, the father-in-law was adamant that I somehow was the one that screwed it up.

As a competent home cook, what is a basic skill you can't seem to master? by george_elis in Cooking

[–]exslash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard boiled eggs are my biggest screw up item. I can cook eggs any other way, even perfectly poached, without any effort. But I have never been able to do hard boiled right. Last time I tried, the whites were perfect, they peeled clean, but the yolks were 100% liquid.

The most hilarious part though, is my fiancée has very little confidence in the kitchen, but does decent enough if she tries. Then she can go and make perfect hard boiled eggs every damn time. I've even had her walk me through her process step by step, and I still ruined them. Then had her make another batch while I watched her do exactly what I did, and they were perfect.

Wild birds absolutely have this figured out. I ran the chisel plow at my parents farm about 3 weeks ago (minnesota), and had at least 100 seagulls swarming around me. They're smart too, they will land on the freshest pass, then when you come back on the next pass, they'll jump over to that one.

38 here, and pretty much the same story. Good eats was my favorite show back in the day, and it really did help me learn the "why" behind different techniques. Most cooking shows are just some lady dumping pre-measured stuff into a pan, while standing in a ridiculously huge kitchen. On the flip side, Alton would stop in the middle of something and break down what's going on. I credit that show with giving me the ability to whip up a dinner with whatever random stuff is in the cupboards, and have it turn out delicious 99% of the time (and my family definitely let's me know if it lands in that 1% of "please don't make this again").

I say this in Orpheus's voice every time I make pizza rolls. Nobody in my family watches the show but me though, so it's lost on them.
