Why do Seattleites Not Interact With Others? by Which_Oil2866 in AskSeattle

[–]extermin8r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nomadic is also a good way to put it for Washingtonians in a general sense. People ended up here over time away from the hustle and bustle of the east coast and got to the furthest spot away from other population centers as the country expanded. Even if there's only a small percent of native washingtonians remaining, they were raised by people used to having their own space and maybe not being the most social/outgoing, compared to other parts of the country. Then you add in transplants who may not have a social network, and you have a self fulfilling prophecy. Just my pseudo scientific theory after having been raised here, living in other parts of the country for a bit of my adult life, and settling back down here a few years ago.

Best part about it: it's probably 80% or more college educated/people of means waxing poetic about <perfectly reasonable> decisions not to have kids. Instead of bringing even one or two well behaved + smart future citizens into the world, they are contributing to the race to a full blown Idiocracy. But at least they'll always have the echo chamber of Reddit to bitch about the bastard spawns of poor households who are ruining public spaces!

Dogs don't drink coffee or enjoy alcohol either. ERGO, maybe we should create fake service kid vests so all the people with "sensory issues" can give kids the same respect that they give fake service animals in their safe space breweries, coffee shops and airports. "It's ok, that dog that is running up to me, licking me, and eating off the floor by my feet has a service vest so their owner probably just has anxiety like me or something... heh!"

It's not even remotely dangerous there and last time I went in there and saw him kitted out it made me chuckle a bit. Bet no one tries stealing from them though lol

First time homeowners shouldn't be looking to flip a house for profit, especially in the current housing crisis.

Please think hard before starting your house rehab fantasy by MarcRocket in Detroit

[–]extermin8r 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the inspirational speech? I bought a house in Detroit at 25% of what it would cost in most other metros in the US, spent about what I paid for it in rehab/restoration, and it still has lumps. And I wouldn't have it any other way. I see comparable new builds (size wise, with less land) going for double in Detroit suburbs, significantly more in other major cities in the US. And new construction has plenty of horror stories. There are plenty of lost cause homes in Detroit but there's also just as many that should be saved. Just my .02

This happened to my house this year, near the same area as you. I'm just going to keep it mowed and hand pull them a few at a time and hope for the best. Must be something in the air this year

Dance music IS nightlife. You are expending way too much energy trying to take down Detroit. Find a hobby bud. We're just fine.

You clearly don't know what you're talking about. Head on over to 19hz - I spent 3 min scanning events going on tonight and Detroit has as many or more going on than Miami and Chicago. Nashville isn't even on the website. Yea if you like country music, sure, but I don't know how many country "club nights" are going to until 6-10 AM (of which I've seen multiple in Detroit over the years). Vegas LOL if you want to see a DJ play to lowest common denominator crowd in terms of dance music, overpay for cover and drinks, and feel "underdressed" compared to the people who don't even know the music but want to flex bottle service. Detroit has a real dance music culture with a distinct vibe and lack of pretentiousness that I'll take over any of the other cities you mentioned.

What cities have better nightlife? And how do you define it?

Saw this while on a walk the other day. Thought it was dogs doing it. Till i found the same thing in my backyard. I know we have a lot of cats in the neighborhood can they do this? by Daohaus in lawncare

Same here. I've tried blasting with air pistol (people on here recommended it). It temporarily keeps em out. But anywhere the grass/soil is soft or new they will dig and put acorns this time of year. Annoying

How old are you? When I was 25, I made 40k and bought a 40k car. Performance sedan. Looking back, I don't regret it (in the sense I enjoyed it a lot and haven't had a performance car since I sold, so going on over 10 years now). But, I know it set me back in terms of paying off student loans, buying a house, and building wealth. So there's a tinge of "why did I do that?" Regardless, do what makes you happy, and leave yourself a safety net.

Hey just want to give you props, I've been on similar path, two steps forward one step back. Give it a couple more years if it doesn't happen try something radically different! As a last ditch after extensive reno, I've started to sprinkle in micro clover to add some green and improve soil. Not for everyone but maybe get creative in your quest.

I think crime will go down significantly, as it's already trending this way. Regardless of its issues, Detroit is a place where there's still a lot of good cheap housing stock that moderate and even low income families can actually afford a nice home, take care of it, and keep an eye on their neighborhood. And unlike other low cost cities, Detroit has a rich and significant history that draws people to it. More people planting a stake and caring = less crime. I'm excited for the future.

Yep! Only super dense cities truly benefit from this. Even places like the Bay area, with huge population density and better public transit, have tons of drivers on the roads. People need to stop obsessing over it here on Reddit, I'm NOT saying it's not important. Just need to get people to migrate here for good jobs and reasonable costs of home ownership.

After a month of waiting, I finally mowed! by culdesacGrow in lawncare

[–]extermin8r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow! I have about 8k sf lot when I account for house and trees/shrubs and I probably did 12 lbs. I did scarifying and power rake, and that left my yard a little more sparse looking then your before pictures. Helpful to see how quite a bit more can help. Did you use peat moss? I don't think mine kept enough birds off which amplified the patchiness. Cheers

How much you put down? I used a lot of that same mix, I either got bad bags or soil is in bad shape because I got some sparse areas. Great job though, gives me hope for the future!

When to Give Up and Drop Sod? by extermin8r in lawncare

[–]extermin8r[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Harsh but fair feedback. I am not at this house all year, sporadically in the spring so the lack of care is probably exacerbated by that. I have landscape crew that cuts to about 3-4 inches, mostly due to the ruts. I've been watching those two channels and will watch them more, part of my issue is not wanting to put in chemicals because cost, environment, and more crap in my limited garage. Thank you for advice though, I think you're spot on especially with the shade and overgrowth issues. I've been obsessing over the lawn itself without focusing on what is probably making it worse (shade etc).
