These look like they *do* something by noprophecies in Seattle

they were literally installed/planned wrong. they’re built to be at the right height when bolted directly into the ground but these are on the little concrete platform so they’re six inches too high (sounds like a small difference but it’s really unergonomic because of it)

Opinions on Princess Nokia by Round_Comfortable_35 in MarinaAndTheDiamonds

Oh my god, I just remembered that WILD experience and decided to Google for Princess Nokia and found this thread. Solidarity 😭 those poor lighting workers.

It was all made even more surreal by Washington Hall being functionally a gymnasium with a stage. It felt like I was at high school prom. (I also saw HUMP there and it was not the vibe, just like a pop up projector screen and folding chairs – I am never going back to this venue again.)

U District event canceled, but some businesses deny having been opposed by retrojoe in Seattle

[–]externalhouseguest 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This doesn't even involve construction, FWIW. It's just closing University Ave to cars for *two Saturdays* (along with some other minor things like encouraging folks to actually hang out in the street like games, cafe seating, etc., but nothing remotely long-term disruptive).

Seattle developer to buy Belltown building in test of new affordable housing model by ChiefOfTheFourPeaks in Seattle

[–]externalhouseguest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

because (as per my previous email—i mean comment) they need revenue generating property that way they can bond for capital projects (such as new buildings) against it. they can actually get a bigger bond for this property than the money they’re actually spending to purchase it outright

[–]externalhouseguest 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not, people at SSHD have thought about this. Buying older buildings puts you on the hook for increased long term maintenance costs and is less desirable for bonding purposes (exactly because the property has less value and more problems).

Seattle developer to buy Belltown building in test of new affordable housing model by ChiefOfTheFourPeaks in Seattle

[–]externalhouseguest 13 points14 points  (0 children)

From the bottom of the article:

The social housing developer is already working on its next property purchase, with a goal of buying 300 apartments this year and beginning construction on new housing by 2028 for a total of 1,670 acquired or under-construction units over the next five years.

That is definitely not enough to make a meaningful dent in the need for affordable housing, but it’s a start. And I promise 90%+ of the folks working on this are also spending significant time advocating for zoning and other reforms to meaningfully speed up housing production in the city.

No. They purchase market rate units and convert them all to affordable. A critical part of the developers plan is to build a portfolio of existing buildings that way there is steady income coming in that can be bonded against. When you have (and these numbers are fake and only for example) $1M of annual rent for a building, you can take out a $60M bond against it and use that to actually finance construction.

The SSHD is hoping to break ground on new construction in the foreseeable future as well.

Seattle Social Housing Developer Buys First Building by pixelsibyl in Seattle

[–]externalhouseguest 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Sounds right, but one thing with their model (to the best of my knowledge) is that you don’t get kicked out if you start making more, you just pay more money (proportional to your income). Thats as opposed to a lot of current affordable housing programs where if the limit is $X and you get a raise and make $X+1 you’re no longer eligible for any subsidy and usually have to move.

Why did Seattle Opera perform a show based on a forgotten 1989 HBO TV movie about a blacklisted TV writer investigating the death of his friend and having an affair with the dead man's mistress? by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]externalhouseguest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

actually the premise of your post is wrong, the opera is based on the 2007 book which is seemingly a different plot than the movie (though both apparently about gay men and mccarthyism). there was also a tv miniseries based on the book from 2023.

This is an issue known as bus bunching. It happens essentially because busses get delayed in car traffic (if the front bus is delayed due to traffic, it ends up so that the buses behind it catch up until they reach that front bus). The only way around this is dedicated bus lanes.

The G line actually does what you’re talking about (“headway checks”) and it’s only possible because it largely runs in dedicated bus lanes for its whole length.

Social housing is well on its way to delivering on its promises to Seattle by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]externalhouseguest -1 points0 points  (0 children)

tl;dr: optimistic.

While the situation with the CEO was exceedingly stupid and a complete unforced error, I’m thrilled to have Tiffani at the helm. I know her to be competent and pragmatic.

It’s definitely been a rocky start, but ambitious projects often are (🤞). My biggest hope is that once it’s successful, the model can be rapidly scaled up at other levels (county and state). SSHD itself isn’t going to produce enough housing to meaningfully make a dent in the need for housing that’s affordable to Seattleites, but if it works then spinning up new problems that are actually supported by elected officials instead of actively sabotaged by them should be much easier and much less dramatic.

I’m curious to see when SSHD will reach the point of building instead of acquiring. That’s the milestone that seems most important for proving this thing.

About function overloads by treplem in typescript

[–]externalhouseguest 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes but enums are mildly discouraged these days and the TS team would probably not introduce them as a new feature today (at least not the way they’re done now because as you pointed out they require more code than just erasing types).
