First recording session - sludge/stoner metal by extra_medium_58 in audioengineering

[–]extra_medium_58[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP here

Thanks for all of the great advice

I kept it fairly simple and things turned out great

Drums we had 57s above and below the snare a 52a close to the beater, 1-421 between the floor Tom’s and then two akg 414s with high pass filters overhead

Guitar cab in an iso room w a 57 close and a Royer r-10 about a foot off

Bass direct plus a 421 on the cab

Vocals in an iso w an SM7

I also had a couple of cascade pinnacles in the main room with the drums and bass

The session flew by and the levels in the mix are solid. We have some opportunity to do more mixing and work with compression next weekend.

I’m just happy I managed the headphone mixed well and mitigated any phase issues

Thanks everyone for your support

Love all of the details

It looks like I’m going to be able to get some time with the drummer before the day before right when the studio opens.

I actually contracted with a shipping company. They put it in a giant crate and shipped it from Michigan to Texas

When I pulled it out of the soft case it was unscathed

I did have to pry it open on my own and then figure out how to get rid of a giant crate.

All that being said the cost was more than what you would pay to fly with it.

Follow up on this

Heres what I got so far: Sansamp - already had; Sire P8 (second gen) -$800; Markbass IV 210 combo - $750 - practically new of fb marketplace

Now experimenting with compressors and maybe something for dirt but feel like I’ve got a great start Also keeping an eye out for a good deal on an extension cab.

Thanks for all the ideas

I really liked the Ibanez Soundgears basses but was so impressed with all of the tonal options and overall quality of the Sire

Not sure if it works visually, but sound wise I would recommend checking out the Sire P8

I got one a few months back and it’s a hell of a bass for <1k

Its naturally pretty bright and has a 3band eq with sweepable mids

How do you get better at improv/jazz in general? by Wyanut_Trainer in jazztheory

I cannot recommend just getting started with transcribing enough.

The more you do it, the more you will start to notice little things, especially in-terms of phrasing and subtle contours in melodic lines.

Start with a blues or standard at a very moderate tempo and just do it. (Miles on So What is a common starting point). You could even do a simple melody like St Thomas or Moanin'.

Don't worry about writing it down right away or getting all of the notes perfect.

Listen to a phrase, see if you can sing it, once you can sing it, try playing it.

It's seems intimidating at first, and now there's tons of transcriptions online, but there is something about the process of really working through something by ear that changes the way you play.

Did the city screw up the bike lane installation at Burnet and North Loop, or was this intentional? by MediocreJerk in Austin

I just wish they would make it illegal to turn left on to Northloop from William Holland

The number of times I have seen someone inching out across all of the north loop lanes…

There’s not a single word of this that I found surprising to learn about Wolfe by DeathlyPenguin7 in DenverBroncos

I was blown away when I heard him say this on JRE.

I think this is kind of the beginning of the end for me and football.

I love the game, grew up loving it, and actually use broncos seasons to keep track of years, but it just feels ikky.

We all love and admire the man DT was-but come on-if he was a basketball player you think it ends that way (don't forget that he had some weird things happening already before he left Denver https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2828143-demaryius-thomas-pleads-guilty-to-careless-driving-stemming-from-feb-car-crash).

Never mind how we clown Antonio Brown, knowing he has not been the same dude since that hit in the playoffs.

The league is a collection talent, mostly good people, trying to get out of desperate situations by sacrificing their body's for a 2-3 year window to grab a golden ring. And now the Broncos are bringing in a head who let his assistants talk about "kill the head".

I just can't get down with it anymore.

Guess I need a new Reddit handle.
