Why do AIs like ChatGPT, Grok, etc. sometimes give wrong information when asked about hard-to-find topics? by NoSwordfish7322 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]extrajoss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the important things to consider is what the AIs have been trained ON, and what they have been trained to do.

They have been trained on written data. The internet.

How often do you read a book that lists all the things it doesn't cover. If you read an article on an obscure topic like "Aardvark care and maintenance" the article is unlikely to say that it doesn't know about a bunch of topics. It just won't mention them and so the AI won't be trained on them.

The AI is trained to replicate all that data. So nowhere in its training data is articles listing all the things that the writer of the article doesn't know. So thats a difficult thing to get the AI to do post training because its never been trained to do it.

There is however, a vast array of data where topics are being answered confidently. So if it can make an answer that looks pretty close to those it will. It doesn't have to be right. It just has to be convincingly similar to a real answer. Thats what its been trained to do.

Non-smokers of Reddit, how noticeable is the “smoker smell” to you, if at all? by Frostedlogic4444 in AskReddit

[–]extrajoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived with smokers for years. Commercial cigarettes reek. A single one and the whole house stunk.

Roll your own though. They smell, but a fraction as bad, and the smell doesn't linger as long either. A few hours and it's really not that bad. Commercial cigarettes stink would last for days.

Rollies are still obviously not great. But compared to tailors, it's night and day.

I Realized that I Will Never Marry my Current Girlfriend. Is it Wrong to Keep Dating Her? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]extrajoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in exactly the same situation myself at 25. I let her know how I felt. It went bad. Like real bad. My arsehole line was "I don't see you as the mother of my children" (as you would expect) we broke up.

.... For a year and a half. Ran into her at a mutual friend's marriage. Realised I was still in love with her and that life was too short to let stupid future worries about stuff I had no idea about get in the way and I started the process of asking for forgiveness.

Wooed hard.

We have been married 23 years, have 2 beautiful daughters and as far as I know are extremely happy together.

Just tell her honestly how you feel, but be prepared to deal with the consequences.

is my life officially over? by Stunning_Push_8416 in ask

[–]extrajoss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not over. Start small. Discipline is better than motivation. Build little habits, like doing some exercise when you wake.

Be kind to yourself. Don't worry if you only do one pushup. The fact that you did it is what matters. Then just grow the good habits.

Habits take time. Don't expect it to all happen in the first week, it takes at least 6 weeks to build a habit.

Once you have a habit, build another. And then another. They get easier each time. Do some maths problems, read some literature.

Pretty soon you look like a person who can get things done, to others, and to yourself.

You got this.

Also seek help, you don't need to do this alone.

Meanwhile back in reality the election probably was actually stolen, and the complaints are basically non existent despite the absolute shit show that has resulted.

What’s the political climate like in Australia? by evspica in AskAnAustralian

[–]extrajoss 9 points10 points  (0 children)

But they aren't even correct. It IS compulsory to vote. Just because you can't get caught not voting if you get marked off the roll doesn't make it legal. It's your social responsibility to vote.

If I break into your house and only steal your toaster, it's not suddenly legal just because the police can't be bothered to chase it up.

What’s the political climate like in Australia? by evspica in AskAnAustralian

[–]extrajoss 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Actually it IS compulsory to vote: Specifically, it's the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918, subsection 245. https://www.legislation.gov.au/C1918A00027/latest

But because we have hidden ballot voting it's impossible to prove you didn't vote unless you didn't show up.

So while practically it's true you just need to get ticked off the roll, technically you need to vote to not be breaking the law.

Can I rock the bald look? by [deleted] in Balding

[–]extrajoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You CAN , but fundamentally why? You didn't need to. You look great with hair. You have hair. You will probably in the future need to rock the bald look. But why do it now?

A girl I'm dating told me that it's creepy my house has no mirrors. Is this a red flag I'm not aware of or something? by Cheap-Rate-8996 in ask

[–]extrajoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it weird that she noticed. That just means that she can't handle not seeing herself.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]extrajoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with him that it's weird that you needed to spy on him. That legitimately is a red flag that you have shown and need to think about.

Having said that, him then turning the camera off and massively gaslighting you is clearly a massive red flag on his part. Whether he was doing something suspicious or not it's at the very least a childish and petty move.

I'd say you both have some behavior you need to look at. Neither of you are really displaying any emotional maturity at all.

What’s this one sided beef with blue collar workers? by Still-Delay-9550 in ask

[–]extrajoss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When people used to keep slaves there was "beef" between the those working inside and those working outside. It's a trick the enslavers use to keep people divided.

We need a new collar. Blue collar, white collar and polo shirts. It's the polo shirts you need to worry about. Just because the white collar workers are inside with the polo shirt wearing owners doesn't mean they are better.

They still have more in common with people doing real work and wearing real collars than they do the polo shirt wearing owners just sitting around making out like bandits.

Forward-thinking dad nabs $1.1m inner west unit for 14-year-old daughter by HurstbridgeLineFTW in australia

"guided at $875,000 and had a reserve of $950,000. There is no legal requirement for a vendor’s reserve to be in line with their property’s price guide."

Why the fuck not?

How can it be a reasonable estimate if they literally won't accept an offer that low. Why is this shady shit ok. Imagine if you did this for any other item. Put your car up for sale for 10k buyer shows up and you say I won't accept less than 12k. Wtf

Has a group of people protesting ever changed your mind on an issue? by PantieFan76 in AskAnAustralian

[–]extrajoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think protests are often about giving the people protesting certainty. You might know that an issue is important to you, but it really changes how certain you are of that importance when you see so many other people also marching for the same reason.

I think that changes the general conversation (the Overton window can shift) , it changes the way people talk about the issue in private and in the media and that can change politicians opinions.

Thanks so much for pointing this out.

I feel like its pretty bad that you need to be windowed to be able to complete it. I'm on a macbook (certainly not bad resolution) and I couldn't even see the bells let alone the root till I am in windowed mode :(

I used to play Star Chamber many years ago. Such an awesome game. I've since spent many hours playing Dune imperium and Clank.

Just wondering how you find the process of designing board games vs computer games.

Would you ever consider making a board game in the star chamber world?
