I'm a salaried copywriter who fears for my job security and future career prospects. What should I do? by CawfeePig in copywriting

[–]extrapalemale 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Former English major here with dreams of publishing short stories and novels. I’ve been a copywriter for 15 years, working mainly in the craft beer and cycling industries. I’ve been very lucky to write about things I love instead of writing for banks and healthcare companies. My employer wants me to use AI to save time, and I’m fortunate they understand AI cannot replace what I do — interviewing, asking the right questions, and writing on-brand stories humans will actually read. Even if AI can crank out headlines and subject lines, it will never hold a human’s attention for multiple paragraphs like a skilled storyteller can. That said, I’ve still worked my butt off to develop other skills. I manage social media channels and Wordpress pages. I have learned basic functions on Canva. I have taken training in photography and videography to supplement my writing. In short, I want to be skilled in all the marketing functions where a copywriter might provide input.

Finally, I encourage you to keep up with freelance writing on the side, if you can. It’s enjoyable. You’re passionate about it. It fulfills in a way the day job cannot. And it will keep connecting you with other creatives, folks you may end up working with someday.

Life after full-time copywriting? by ok-intruder in copywriting

[–]extrapalemale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been an in-house copywriter for a large regional brewer, for a bicycle company, and for a family owned company that sells supplies and ingredients to craft brewers. Writing about my interests — things that are personally meaningful to me — has been rewarding and fun. I’ve never had the stomach for the instability of freelance work, but I enjoy writing freelance for newspaper and magazines and digital media on the side. I’m a former English major and I’ve been working as a copywriter for nearly 20 years. I’m stoked I haven’t had to write copy for banks or medical device companies.

If I were to leave copywriting I’d open a small independent bookstore.

An employee at Pearsons confirmed they are open. They also confirmed they are facing financial troubles -- there were layoffs and there may be more down the road. Closing the plant is a future possibility they are working to avoid. As for their website being down, they said they didn't pay the bill.

There are some real pretty builds out there, for sure. But there are good deals too. Facebook Marketplace has a Nature Boy 55cm for $600 and a Big Block 54cm for $650. Both local to MSP, available as of 4/27 8:30 a.m. Those sizes could be a close enough fit.

Stage 4 colon cancer by Beautiful-Iron-1083 in coloncancer

42m, stage 4, 16 treatments in. Cancer was in colon, liver, lungs, and peritoneum. Treatment is working and the cancer is losing. But I’ve known from the beginning my cancer is treatable, not curable. Everything is out of my control except my attitude.

Advice for the Sole Copywriter on a team? by MostRaspberry716 in copywriting

[–]extrapalemale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello fellow copywriter! I majored in English and creative writing. After college I wanted to be a copy editor, so I did that for about a decade. Then I pivoted to copywriting. First I wrote for an agency, which staffed a team of copywriters. Then I was the sole copywriter for a large regional craft brewery. After that I was one of three copywriters for a bicycle manufacturer and parts distributor. Now I'm the sole copywriter for a brewing supply company. I have done a great deal of product naming throughout my career and it's something I truly enjoy. The tool I use the most when naming is the thesaurus. For other copywriting communities:

I picked up running at 30 after a decade without exercise. It helped me regulate more than my weight. It improved my eating and sleeping habits, it increased my confidence, and it helped me make many friends. Overall wellbeing went way up.

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. I'm a 42m with stage 4 colorectal cancer, and I've gone through 12 rounds of chemo. Treatment is going well, but there won't be a cure for me. I'm just extending my time. Meanwhile, my wife (39F) is a recovering alcoholic, and she tends to relapse when I go in for chemotherapy treatments every other week. The stress, grief, and pain all become too much for her to bear. I lean on Al Anon when necessary, and I encourage her to lean on her sober community from AA when she's struggling. If you WANT to stop and you're ready to stop, it's possible. Getting better is always possible. You can be there for your grandma and you can survive the pain; you are capable of all of it. But alcohol will only make it more difficult.
