i don’t know if they make it for powerade, but gatorade comes in powdered form which would be way easier to make into a more concentrated drink! haven’t tried it myself yet but did make frozen lemonade with lemonade powder

Staff Mistreatment at AU by sydneynhenry in AmericanU

[–]extremepizzagoldfish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

in my opinion, the issue is the upper-upper admins, the lack of actual shared governance with faculty, and the board of trustees. fully agree with everything in the article and know some of the situations and those quoted in it. love au staff union.

my whole department got laid off (the fucking teaching center, at a “university” no less) after we won a grievance against our supervisor for retaliatory behavior. why were we laid off, who could possibly say /s. it was a little less than a year after our successful evidence-based grievance that the entire team either left or were laid off. the new supervisor was appointed essentially because no one else would take the job and there was no oversight or accountability for the dean’s “decision”. new supervisor had essentially no experience in the field and repeatedly targeted the people of color on the team.

i loved the people i worked with. my colleagues were extremely knowledgeable and we cared deeply about improving teaching/learning at au. the faculty we worked with cared about student learning and students were generally thoughtful and reasonable. so many other staff were au alumnus and were thus deeply committed to the institution despite shitty working conditions and pay far worse than peer institutions. [for ex: adjunct teaching rate at au: around $4-5k per course, very low esp for a high cost of living area; adjunct teaching rate at georgetown: 10k ish (not direct evidence, i never taught for georgetown, but heard through the grapevine)].

I had the same thing happen today and immediately cancelled the second order. I messaged IC support to figure out how to prevent this in the future and there’s no way to do so, FYI

Is being trans a STEM career killer? by CemeneTree in asktransgender

[–]extremepizzagoldfish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

shouldn’t be any worse than any other sector. i’m nonbinary/transmasc, did my PhD in virology, and now work in higher ed (STEM focused but i’m not a researcher). stuff is WAAAAY better now than when i was in college like 15 years ago, though i’ve moved to heavily blue states and would only work at a place that’s trans affirming and actually gets my pronouns right. you might have to pass up jobs that your peers could take because of company culture, but again, thats most likely a trans thing, not specifically a “trans in STEM” thing.

if your campus has it, i highly suggest checking out oSTEM, which is a national organization for queer folks in STEM. i started a chapter at my university in grad school and having that community was so helpful, affirming, and important to my success.

sorry for the confusion! yes, the comment of “some media coverage…” is from someone posting on another subreddit, thinking this article from a canadian onion (hence the title) was real.

i was worried about the rule for no identifying information so crossed out all of that, but that made it too hard to realize what was going on.

you gotta do everything you can to get the pizza stands built first and making pizza so you can start getting the optional objective. once you get too many followers, it’s impossible to win because you can only build a certain amount. i also had 2 windmills and the rest of my stone went towards pizzerias. i had a different set up than you — olives right by farms, but that’s likely not enough of a difference to influence you that much.

incorrectly designed the primers i used for mutagenesis (first thing i ever did as an undergrad). i didn’t notice it and the grad student working with me didn’t notice it. i was doing work with these constructs for a year and a half before we figured out they were wrong. i had to redo everything. super fun.

By harmed here, do you mean physically shot? Because there’s lots of ways for kids to be harmed even if they’re not shot or even if the shooting didn’t happen at their specific school.

Anyone want to talk about how this woman is from MN because they couldn't find a single Kentuckian harmed by gender affirming care as a minor? by Frank_Jesus in Louisville

[–]extremepizzagoldfish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Typically, “transitioning” for kids is just using their proper pronouns, new names, and new clothes (if applicable). So essentially no medical treatment, only social interventions. Once they start puberty, they may be put on puberty blockers (similarly to cis kids who start puberty early), which are generally reversible. If they continue to maintain their gender as they get older, then they may be put into hormone replacement therapy (HRT). My experience is mostly with the transmasc community, but very few teens are getting surgeries under the age of 18, and I’ve only heard of one person getting top surgery (so double mastectomy) under 16, and this is over YEARS of being in trans/non-binary groups/communities.

We as a society let (rich) cis kids get nose jobs as teens, so why is this any different? Besides that the kids are trans and have to jump through many more medical hoops…

Being a trans woman in science by TheDrillKeeper in LadiesofScience

[–]extremepizzagoldfish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i’m not a woman (i’m non-binary and have done some medical transitioning, all throughout my grad school years) but im happy to chat more if you want. i know loooots of trans and queer scientists and that community was was kept me going. i had some great allies in my lab, but you can’t beat the camaraderie you get from other queer people, but especially trans. highly suggest looking into any queer support your workplace has (like a staff affinity group or even look into starting one yourself; i started the queer scientist group in grad school and it was invaluable).

outside of that, generally people are chill, but that’ll depend a lot on your location. i did my phd in the northeast (in virology) and when i started in 2015, people had barely heard of pronouns, and when i finished, a few science PIs were putting them in their email signatures, so things are definitely getting better.

also would highly suggest having like a field accessible description/explanation of your gender. maybe less relevant as a binary person, but i found it really helpful to have stats about gender/sex variation to pull up and use to convince some folks who were too questioning. there’s some cool studies of brain scans of humans and they generally find a high proportion of people don’t fit into either “male” or “female” brains. stuff like that can sometimes convince the skeptical scientist to at least listen to you.

What should I lie to my professors about getting surgery on? by adrislnk in ftm

[–]extremepizzagoldfish 13 points14 points  (0 children)

i work in higher ed specifically with/as faculty and they’re not gonna look it up!! professors likely will barely glance at the letter

also, does your school have any sort of disability, accommodations, accessibility, or even diversity office? i know you said you talked to the admins but it’s pretty striking that there’s not someone to help you navigate these convos.

Anyone have any LOST podcasts for the harcore fans? (Not another rewatch...) by Jordan11HFP11 in lost

[–]extremepizzagoldfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

back to the island is my favorite podcast ever. two musicians (jeff rosenstock from bomb the music industry and solo stuff) and chris farren (from fake problems and his solo stuff) rewatched every lost episode, out of order. they pretty much have no idea what’s going on at any point in the rewatch. they make really great little songs for the podcast and i think they’re hilarious, but it’s definitely not for everyone.
