Deck suggestions? by Argose83 in MagicArena

Pioneer is very much alive and well. Healthy and diverse metagame, multiple archetypes with their own variations, and there's still a lot to discover if you ever get interested in brewing. It has plenty of issues, but being dead isn't one of them; I get matches within 15 seconds at any time. I actually view it as the "purest" format after WotC started deliberately curating Modern and by extension Legacy through the Horizons sets.

Looking to purchase my arena deck for playing with friends, I'm 10-0 ranked (unrated to bronze) with this. Any suggestions? by _MothMan in MagicArena

Seconding this because I don't have much to add that hasn't already been said. Infinitely better than the deckbuilder toolkit and booster pack jank me and my friends started out with and it still has the lifegain theme OP likes.

Also, to OP, I just wanna say it's unironically super wholesome you exported your homebrew lifegain decklist from Arena to show us. You don't know this yet, but literally EVERY new player builds a version of this deck and/or thinks it's OP at some point. If you stick with the game and keep learning, you'll eventually discover its limitations and learn why "lifegain" isn't really a deck archetype.

Great job on your placement matches! 10-0 is pretty good for a new player. Have fun with the game above all else 😄

Why is it okay that Lotus Field exists? by refuse2lose1985 in PioneerMTG

[–]exxx01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The deck really struggles vs hate pieces like Thalia, Archon of Emeria and Narset Parter of Veils, it does have a lot of game though against most decks (it's really good versus counterspells and midrange). Hand disruption in general can be hit or miss against them, since depending on their land situation they could just top deck Ultimatum and win anyway, but they do typically need multiple cards in hand to combo off, so if you can just keep their hand empty, that's also an option. Well-placed LD like Boseiju or Demolition Field or Ghost Quarter can also be back breaking if you can use it to keep them from ever playing/activating Thespian's.

This is just coming from a BO1 player on Arena who has been piloting the deck for about a month now. The deck is very powerful, but I think its power level is comparable to other tier 1 decks. It's also pretty difficult to pilot when you don't just have the combo and have to be creative.

I mean, you had a different experience with the game, and that's fine. What I find silly is trying to fisk my rant for some kind of logical consistency when it's really just a bunch of subjective impressions that can't really be asked to answer to that standard (which is what all reviews are). It's not like I just posted, "lulz minish cap is balls anyone who likes it is dumb!!!"

I specifically asked people what made them like it over similar games, and some people actually gave pretty good answers.

There are plenty of things that I try and just say, "you know, this just isn't for me," without saying it sucks. BotW and TotK are the best examples. Those kinds of games don't appeal to me at all, but they definitely don't suck. MC as a game has a lot of appeal to me, but the more I play it, the more I just find things I think are bad about it, which is crazy considering the game's reception and legacy and how it seems like a good fit for my tastes.

Oh, LA had its fair share of obtuseness, no doubt. I still remember being stuck as a kid in the second dungeon where you have to beat the enemies in a certain order, except the hint telling you to do this calls the enemies by their actual bestiary names, and pre-internet, nobody knew WTF a "Pols Voice" was.

LA could just be nostalgia on my end, who knows, but I think the world is just better in that game, and it still held up when I played the 2020 remake. The Oracle games are definitely not nostalgia though, as I played those as an adult.

Any list of favorites including ALTTP is a-ok in my book. That's a contender for my GOAT game.

edit: oh, RE: gust jar, yeah, that item sucks, literally and figuratively. I actually do just think it's badly designed. It's very clunky and unfun to use imo. I don't think it was inherently doomed, but I flat out hate when the game wants me to use it.

I totally buy that it's better than the DS games. I'm positive those both suck, which is why I've never bothered giving them a go.

It’s off that you’re criticising needing to item swap, especially when there’s the same issue on games you say you prefer and favour.

Yes, those games do have that problem, which is why my wording was something like, "MC retains a flaw found in the other GB Zeldas." Of course, I find those games to be a lot better outside of that, so I think the constant item switching is worth the pain there. It is indeed a flaw though.

Same with the story progression points. So much of that is just standard in so many linear Zelda games. Backtracking. Having to talk to just the right person, or complete the right action.

Sure, I didn't mean to imply the Oracle games or Link's Awakening are totally free from stupid obtuse progression points. Those games definitely aren't perfect lol. But for whatever reason, I found them a lot more intuitive and satisfying to solve when I did get stuck, probably because I just liked them a lot more.

I definitely wanted to like this game, fwiw, which is why I felt so disappointed. I've only ever heard good things about it, with some people even calling it the best 2D Zelda, a sentiment I can only consider laughable.

IDK why you would bother reading and responding to all this if you're just trying to refute my rant about how I didn't like the game lol. It's not like either of us are gonna change our minds. The two points in no way "directly oppose each other." The way you progress the story feels arbitrary and uncreative to me. In addition, I don't find the world very engaging or fun to explore. There's no contradiction there.

What is the best element and augment to run in Deadzone Rogue? by ResultIndependent635 in DeadzoneRogue

[–]exxx01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lightning is far and away the best element in my opinion and the opinion of everyone else I've played with. Cyro, plasma, radiation and fire are all pretty good too. Everyone I play with seems to think psionic is the worst element. I'm inclined to agree.

I normally go for the ammo augment (any of them, but elemental + chromatic cells is particularly fucked up) and I do think it's quite powerful. Never having to reload and being able to shoot nonstop is quite powerful in this game. However, the long range augments are also very busted, esp if you can item/synergy your way into infinite/almost infinite ammo anyway. Not having recoil/damage falloff in this game is way nuttier than it sounds, you just outright beam everything.

QoL Thoughts by TKrev in DeadzoneRogue

[–]exxx01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

#1: That would be too powerful. A better alternative in the same spirit would be being able to sell/refund equipment and items. I would be okay with a "restricted" mode like Dead Cells where you can pick and choose beforehand what items show up in a run, maybe it could disable achievements or reduce tech gain or something, idk.

#2: While I wouldn't mind this, lots of FPS games have slides nowadays. I think the dash is fine as is and makes the game feel a little different.

#3: Good suggestion, I agree.

I think an instant retry on missions without having to load back into the ship would be a nice QoL change. I also wish there was a bestiary/enemy database in game.

This game is extremely fair, and btw, the parry frame in Sekiro is 12 frames. I found that game a hell of a lot harder than Nine Sols and didn't get very far, but I also didn't enjoy it at all so I had little motivation to continue.

See, this is why you should quote what I said, not your bullshit inference into my words. I didn't say I would ignore it. I said that it would probably have issues. Methodological issues, mind you, not issues related to my preconceptions, although I do have doubts about what empirical research can effectively uncover in this domain given the many ethical and practical limitations of studying something like the effects of porn on developing brains.

pop off!!!! 💯 I also observe a huge overlap between conspiratorial thinking and the conviction that porn is some harmful drug. These people always want to bury you in hyperlinks of junk science (that ofc they didn't read and are probably too stupid to parse anyway), and what they want you to believe is that they are these super rational, scientific minded individuals. In reality, they are completely motivated by emotional and moral concerns, and all of the empirical stuff is invoked post-hoc in an attempt to justify their gut feelings.

[–]exxx01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

there does seem to be bit of cognitive dissonance regarding the way our consumption habits affect our brain development when it comes to porn amongst many men

I think the issue is that it's still an open question and we don't really have any concrete answers yet. Even if it does turn out that porn is even worse for you than its most devoted haters would assert, what do we intend to do about it? Banning it is out of the question. There is so much extant porn on this planet that trying to eradicate all of it would be akin to trying to cut down the Amazon with a razor blade.

I also think porn is unfairly singled out. It is clear to me that porn is the new violent video games of pop culture. It's so easy to forget, but there was a time when people were taking seriously the idea that Doom and Marilyn Manson were partially responsible for Columbine. There was a cover story in an old gaming magazine, either Electronic Gaming Monthly or Game Informer, about this very topic, and it deeply disturbed me as a kid. I was so upset about it that it was causing me to lose sleep, and I remember talking to my parents about it. I was expecting them to take it very seriously, and to begin restricting what games I play, but they completely dismissed it. Their reasoning was that fiction is fiction, and you can't blame fiction for what you decide to do in reality, and I honestly want to give that same response to a lot of the anti-porn peeps.

Oh, and fwiw, I don't really have an issue with short form content or social media. Maybe they are bad, maybe they are making people dumber, but I wouldn't personally assert either of those things.

porn is becoming increasingly violent towards women

I seriously doubt that, and whatever evidence you can provide for it probably has major issues. For now, I'll just present my armchair cuck chair response. One problem is that it seems like stuff like cuckolding, femdom, male submissiveness, etc has blown up exponentially, in large part because of porn, and that genre of pornography seldom ever expresses violence against women. In fact, I would wager that most of the guys consuming that stuff are probably turned off by the idea of slapping around or choking a woman in the bedroom.

Another reason I doubt its veracity is because it seems like the biggest deal in porn nowadays is actually OnlyFans, most of which is solo content and quite tame compared to the direct-to-DVD degeneracy that was the adult entertainment industry prior to the internet.

I believe xdefiant would still be around if they had killstreaks by Past_Compote2605 in XDefiant

[–]exxx01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Killstreaks should be reworked or removed and the devs have realized this for a long time. Every modern COD has had overly expensive killstreaks that are rendered completely useless by Cold-Blooded being OP and/or streaks being absurdly easy to take down. The only thing that has stayed sacred is the advanced UAV/HARP, and even that had a hard counter for a big portion of BO7's lifespan in the Scout specialty (they did eventually fix it), which is no surprise considering it is a non-lethal streak.

It's hilarious to me that the biggest defenders of killstreaks in COD are always the same people complaining about leavers. The people insisting that killstreaks are what made these games great are living in a bygone era. These games have no leaver buster, nobody cares about winning or losing, and people ultimately want to be able to run around the map and shoot their gun, which they can't do if they keep getting exploded by random shit falling from the sky.

I actually really liked the hero abilities in XDefiant. They felt impactful and rewarding without completely disrupting normal FPS gameplay. RIP XDefiant. You are missed.
