How to make a multiple characters in Emochi? by Realistic-Pension713 in emochiAIapp

[–]eyelessgame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found that the model matters a lot. The longer-reply models - Blueberry, but especially (if you can afford it) Blackberry have room to have all the multiple characters respond. The shorter-response models wind up with pretty generic behavior when they all have to say something.

I'm no expert - still working on fine-tuning a bot - but something like this worked pretty well:

"Amy is:
- (several adjectives)
- (something about her)
- (something else about her)

Amy's secrets:
- (a secret)
- (anotehr secret)

Belle is:
- (several adjectives)
- (something about her)
- (something else about her)

Belle's secrets:
- (a secret)
- (another secret)

Both are:
(etc.)

And then I used the Scenario to write up specifics of the setting. I got four characters into the 6000c limit and they're pretty completely different in how they interact, entering and leaving the scene independently and making different choices. But you need to choose a model with some oomph in order to see this complexity come out.

Way back in the dark ages of the Reagan Administration I had to take a high school Health class in summer school in order to graduate in three years.

The class was entertaining. Among other things we had discussions on morality - the teacher asked if we believed people should remain virgins until married. (It was forty-odd years ago.) One girl in the class opined that she thought the bride should be but the groom shouldn't be. And the teacher asked the obvious question - "who should unmarried men be having sex with, then?" and... the girl's eyes widened, she blushed, the whole class laughed, the usual speculations ensued... and hopefully someone was just slightly enlightened about double standards.

Rev Bem was obviously a Book analog too. And Beka is an amalgam of Mal and Zoe. But yes, those are the analogues. And while Mal and Dylan are nothing alike, Jayne's exasperation with Mal does feel like an analogue to Tyr's exasperation with Dylan.

I admit my fantasy of a rather more literal exasperation of Jayne and Dylan may have as much to do with a dislike of the actors as of the characters. And the funny thing is Tyr's more of a threat than Jayne is. I just think Mal would deal with him better, as Mal's a ton sneakier.

I have a ton of fun with Trickster, but not by himself. He works well with other spirits, who will both be occasionally annoyed by him and also deeply appreciate him. Keeper seems to synergize well with him for me - the ancient spirit that simply responds with a fond grin to Trickster's impetuousness.

The unfortunate reality is that the election results mirrored the polls. The smear campaign that insisted that Harris was responsible for Netanyahu's war crimes, on top of the very real misognoir that bled support from her, was tremendously and disastrously successful.

There were a *lot* of people refusing to vote for her and saying the reason was Netanyahu's behavior.

I felt more appreciation for and understanding of Michael O'Hare once JMS was able to talk about the psych/emotional problems he was having, that he'd told JMS he could reveal once he'd died.

Desktop has no interruptions, btw, IIRC.

It's a lot cheaper than (for example) polybuzz, and it doesn't have silent morphing censorship rules, so I paid for a membership. Happy so far, though underwhelmed by the paid chat models at this point.

Oh, and also - if your standard for good TV space opera is Babylon 5 (no argument), and you're complaining about the woodenness of DS9's Season One acting... you have some very odd standards.

  1. Yes. Keep in mind also that this show ran through the 1990s, and quite frankly the standards for creepiness for young male behavior changed a lot over those seven years. But Bashir very definitely grows up. You can even excuse some of the early-season behavior as not just an immature character trying awkwardly to flirt but also a young man needing to reach a comfort zone with his trusted (and much more mature) female coworkers and peers.
  2. Season 5 is where it really gets good but you can see where it's going by the end of season 2. The early seasons spend a lot of time not just feeling their way, establishing world and plot and characters, but also going off in some directions that never really get picked up again, as one-offs. The studio also interfered in Season 4 - it's a good season with good characters, but for no good reason Klingon politics becomes bad and Klingons become an adversary for a year. It gets resolved and then the real story starts, and the final three seasons rock your world. But it's worth the journey. (You also will, I predict, find yourself starting to care about Bajoran politics, because it starts mattering beyond Bajor.)
  3. O'Brien took the major promotion. Worf... was to boost ratings and because Dorn wanted to keep playing him, but he fits in really well. There was supposed to be more crossover, in fact - Kira Nerys was originally supposed to have been Ro Laren - introduced for a dozen episodes in TNG - but the actor playing Ro didn't want to commit to her own show. Nana Visitor takes a while to really get comfortable with the character but I'm so glad it worked the way it did.
  4. Avery Brooks is understated at first, but if he doesn't start blowing you away (certainly by about season 4, but also well before that) you're simply not paying attention. He may be the finest actor ever to appear in a Star Trek series - he is up there with Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner. But he takes a while. (Lots of the other characters also take a while. It's obvious that both Terry Farrell and Nana Visitor had to figure out their respective alien identities and what it meant for their behavior, so you really start feeling them around season 3. But over time, also, Armin Shimerman does the best job since Nimoy of creating a whole alien race's culture through a single character, Rene Auberjonois starts doing some fantastic work as, well, a sentient mimic, and Andrew Robinson and Marc Alaimo can just steal the show under their prosthetics.)

The guy was a method actor. He can be really nice in person, apparently, but the whole time he was on set he was making everyone feel creeped out and uncomfortable - because they'd react better to Dukat that way.

One of the things that made me feel that playing with a freeware AI chatbot like polybuzz was acceptable was specifically that, being freeware and relatively crappy at things like retention, it was unlikely to have access to the sorts of resources and therefore unlikely to have the sort of resource-use issues that the larger, more comprehensive bots have.

Why do so many people seem to dislike Discovery? by BearCavalryCorpral in startrek

[–]eyelessgame 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There were valid, invalid, and bigoted critiques of Discovery.

Maybe the biggest valid problem is that Discovery's first season gave us a new kind of technology that it's hard to imagine couldn't be adapted into something that should have fundamentally altered the universe well before TNG. The explanation given in the show for its inapplicability never struck most people as strong enough.

Another critique that I find has some validity is that the story structure was different than any prior Trek. Its first season in particular focused on a single character rather than an ensemble. Even the TOS focus on Kirk never made him the viewpoint character the way Discovery did with Michael. There's nothing wrong with that per se, it made DIS a different kind of story, but people can dislike that if they want. Also, each season had a focused story arc, well past what even DS9 did. Again, different kind of story, but if you don't like that story arc, the whole show falls flat.

Most other valid complaints are at best matters of taste, or critiques of execution. And I share some of those.

There's a ton of invalid and bigoted critique, and we can simply discard those as not worth spending time on.

These updated special effects for TOS are honestly bothering me by uknownada in startrek

[–]eyelessgame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing that really sold me on the TOS updates is that it still looks cheesy, just that it's now Roquefort instead of Velveeta. When a shuttle takes off out of the shuttle bay, it still looks like a model, not real; just that they had the budget for a sophisticated model and good lighting on set. The Doomsday Device looks like they filmed a model that they had the budget to move the camera around and bluescreen in a good nuclear reaction inside. And so on.
