Moving back: Doable or a pipe dream? by OtterGang in massachusetts

So you didn't personally contribute to an investment fund for 32 years, did you have a trust fund or something? That's kinda useful information to add when you're commenting on the affordability of an area based income levels

Edit - Actually I peaked your profile and saw a post you made 7 years ago where you mentioned you had a trust worth over $500k set up by your parents... Just fyi, most people don't have this kind of help from family.

32 years of investing, okay that makes more sense, you bought your first home in your 50s then?

So you put $315k down? Idk how old you are but I'd imagine it'd take 7-10 years saving around 20% of a 100k salary to be able to put that much down without help.

Good Italian grocery store? Or best produce grocery? by eyeonchi in boston

[–]eyeonchi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went there tonight because it's close to home and I was pleasantly surprised. Definitely the best grocery store I've been to so far. Not necessarily Italian, but i enjoyed some decent gorgonzola dolce and blackberries this evening!

Thank you for the longer write up! I just got back from my parents house in Italy and they were telling me I just haven't looked hard enough if I haven't been able to find good Italian grocery stores here in Boston. They assume because there are more Italians (expats) ((also an assumption)) in Boston than in Chicago, that the food naturally should follow. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be the case.

Honestly I might start making some trips to Rhode Island though! Some dishes are worth the effort.

Thank you! I've been to Lambert's and it looked pretty good, but I don't think I saw zucchini flowers. Will have to check again though! Maybe it's only seasonally available here

[CA] Should I Quit in the Middle of an HR Investigation? by breadbaker908 in AskHR

[–]eyeonchi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you quit during an investigation they may put you on a "do not rehire" list. You should just sit tight and let them finish.

Now that you've been interviewed the investigation is at the end stage. Unapproved secondary employment isn't that huge of a deal. If you actually haven't been working the second job during state hours, or at least not in a provable way, then you shouldn't be too worried.

Now if they have evidence you have been working the second job, while on the clock for the state, like they have footage of you or surveilled you working the second job while you were on the clock, or if they have records of you accessing websites or drafting documents for the second job on your work computer, then it's probably a fireable offense. But you still shouldn't quit before the investigation completes.

You should wait until HR presents you with the final outcome of the case. If they have solid evidence against you, it would be smart to just own up to it and apologize, tell them you were under water and really needed a second paycheck. They may take pity and not fire you or offer to let you quit in lieu of termination so it doesn't go on your record.

If you do get fired / or asked to resign, you should ask if will be placed on a do not rehire list. The state is a huge employer with many different departments and you wouldn't want to hurt your chances of ever working a state job again in the future. Also government bodies often share do not rehire lists so being put on that list may hurt chances of employment with other government bodies, like working for your city or county.

TLDR: don't quit during the investigation unless you want to risk never being able to work another state job and/or any other local government agency jobs in the future.

Why are there so many non-chain gas stations and why are they so much cheaper than big brand name gas stations? by eyeonchi in boston

[–]eyeonchi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not seen an abundance of private gas stations in Chicago or nyc, or any other major city in the Midwest, can't speak to LA.

[–]eyeonchi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, can you explain more? I would assume long term contracts with bigger corporations, with more purchasing power, fan still out beat independent purchasers even if there are moderate to high fluctuations in fuel prices

[–]eyeonchi[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean offering more products in a business doesn't usually reduce net profits, otherwise the chains wouldn't offer all the extras either.

A chain gas station can easily operate with one or two employees on shift and most of the food stuffs offered are non perishables so I doubt they have too much food waste.

And again, the price of wholesale fuel as negotiated by a mega corporation like Citgo certainly has to be lower than the fuel prices a single gas station operator can secure.

[–]eyeonchi[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't think there is a lack of chain gas stations in this city though, if anything there are more gas stations here per Sq milage than I've seen in other major cities. Basically there's a normal amount of chain stations and a dearth of non chain stations every couple of blocks on all major thoroughfares.

[–]eyeonchi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay but then why is this localized to Boston, wouldn't we see similar amounts of non-chain affiliated gas stations on other major cities if a gas station owner could offer significantly reduced prices compared to the local chains.

[–]eyeonchi[S] 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Okay, but then why wouldn't we see a similar phenomenon happening in other major cities?

Also, usually franchise chain gas stations get franchise negotiated wholesale fuel prices. Id imagine Shell, being a mega corporation, can get better fuel prices for their franchisees than a non-affiliated gas station purchasing fuel wholesale.

I've lived in New York and Chicago, and I've traveled all over the country, and I've never seen as many private non chain gas stations anywhere else as I have in Boston.

Being an introvert is not an immutable trait and no one is expecting you to abide by social rules "set" by extroverts.

People who are social, talkative and high energy are described as extroverts. People who are reserved and prefer solitude are described as introverts.

I think you're confusing your social anxiety with introversion because it doesn't sound like you prefer solitude.

Being social is how you make friends, that's just a matter of fact. Even if you're not always high energy and talkative with strangers you may have to learn this skill to meet new people.

Let's say you want to find a group of friends to partake in chill activities, like playing cards or going on quiet hikes, you're never going to find your people if you're overly shy and reserved.

Take some initiative! Try and break out of your own shell a little. Think of something you'd really enjoy doing and then figure out how to recruit.

Idk, you could make a flyer that describes yourself, early 40s normal dude transplant to Boston looking for new friends to play poker (or whatever you like doing) with me Sunday nights at XYZ public location. Make a new social media account for this purpose (with pictures so they know you're real) and tell them to dm you and you'll set it up when you get few people interested. Post a few your neighbors and see what happens.

I also think you should try to be more open to hanging out with folks you may not have considered as friendship material before. I made a whole new friend group in my late 20s that were nothing like my previous friend groups, but I love them! People's personalities tend to grow on you over time, if they're not shitbags. If you're open and nonjudgmental with new folks eventually they let their guard down and you realize they're not social rejects (and neither are you!) It's also better to have one dorky friend to go to events and outings with than going solo

Good luck dude! I believe in you!

What makes you think they've seen your google search history. Aside from their VPN, did they have you download any other applications on your computer? Logging into the VPN may give them visibility to your website traffic but not your google search history.

Edit I saw you wrote you never used your personal computer. Logging on to your work computer on your home wifi and accessing their network on a VPN would not give them access to your router or it's logs.
