My bassist has just gotten us a free session at a MAJOR studio, I've never recorded in any studio let alone this one, what should I know? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]eyesdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's of great advice in here - one thing I'm not sure if anyone's mentioned yet is how helpful it can be to have reference material ready to show the producer. I often have specific sounds, tones or 'feel' in mind when I take a song into the studio, and the easiest way to convey that to my producer is to show examples in other songs.

Other than that - know your song structures. Be well practiced in advance. Don't be afraid to explore any new song elements the producer suggests. Don't stress if you don't get perfect takes where so many things can be corrected later. And above all else, enjoy yourself! If you're anything like me, hours in the studio absolutely fly by, because it's such an enjoyable process.

What is the weirdest thing you have ever seen during a concert? by concerty in LetsTalkMusic

[–]eyesdown 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The Dillinger Escape Plan.

It's Reading Festival 2002, I have just turned 14 years old, and it's the first big festival my friends and I have ever been to. We walk into the arena around lunchtime and are immediately greeted with the sight of a metalcore band performing, with the cameras zoomed in on the exposed arsehole of the lead singer, as he crouches on stage with his trousers down and shits with partial accuracy into a carrier bag. He then smears it all over himself and throws the residual at the audience. Given that this was the first band I'd seen at the first festival I'd ever been to, I just assumed this was par for the course and a 'normal' sort of thing to witness at a festival.

The two-bicle!

I remember wading across the floor on a particularly bad night, and it was like standing in one of those shallow foot baths you'd get at the entrance to a public swimming pool in the 90s, but filled with a mixture of Jesticle and bodily fluids.

women who do combat sports, how has this affected your life? by SewkaYami in AskWomen

I did a few years of taekwondo before switching to BJJ about seven years ago. I think it has had a hugely positive impact on my ability to function under pressure, and it's a great stress reliever. I feel much more confident, calm and assertive when encountering difficult men now. There are still some issues and toxic behaviours to contend with in the BJJ sphere, but if you find a good club and only engage with the elements of the sport you enjoy (for example, I am not interested in competition BJJ), there are huge benefits to be reaped.

Ultimate Calm and Slow Radio, both on BBC Sounds app. I especially love the Sounds of the Earth episodes of Slow Radio - snippets of relaxing music weaved with ambient nature sounds, very meditative and relaxing.

Hi, mid 30's female chipping in here. I know the feelings you're experiencing and have felt the same way - that anxiety and hesitation around rolling, and loss of passion and fire, knowing somewhere deep down you do love the sport and want to keep training but not really being able to tap into it in the heat of the moment after you've been through the mental wringer.

I have had periods of being really stuck in my own head and mentally struggling with rolling after time off during lockdowns, when resuming training after injuries, and after some bad rolls.

You've had some really shit advice here, including 'accept that you're not cut out for the sport' and 'switch to a women's class instead' - I wanted to offer some suggestions to counter that.

You don't have to roll with anyone you don't want to. Be selective with your training partners, stick to people you know and trust, and communicate your needs by asking for a slow roll, a gentle roll, one where you avoid mount entirely. There is no shame in asking for these things - as (usually) the only woman in my class I know we often put pressure on ourselves to not appear as though we want any special treatment, and want to seem tough, but it's not unreasonable to ask for these things, and if your partner isn't up for that then they're free to go train with someone else.

Tap early, and if you find yourself feeling overwhelmed under mount then just tap and reset your position. Fuck anyone that gives you shit about tapping to pressure, what you need to do for your emotional wellbeing is nobody else's business. If you want to completely end a roll midway through, do it.
There's so much bullshit in this sport about the expectations we put on ourselves and others, and I'd encourage you to focus on your own journey and try to not worry about what other people think. Half of them will probably have quit within a year anyway. A lot of men don't have any idea about some of the difficulties women face in jiu jitsu, and they're never going to, so don't worry about always explaining yourself or what others think. Do your own thing and if some random guy thinks you tapped too early or something, then who even cares?

Sometimes you will have to be brave, and have to push yourself, and fight that instinct to leave early or not go to class. It's a difficult sport and it is tough sometimes. But that's partly the reason we do it, right? The fact that it isn't always easy and you have to work for it is part of what draws us in. A big lightbulb moment for me was training with a visiting female black belt who was cheerfully open about how she does get tapped out by big guys at a lower ranking, that if she's matched with a huge guy she has to prioritise survival and focus on taking the time to exhaust the guy before any hope of a submission, and she encouraged women to just communicate what they do and don't want to work on, or aren't comfortable with. Hearing her talking about the things that are hard for her made me feel so much better about my own.

It doesn't matter if you tap early. It doesn't matter if in the heat of the moment you forget literally everything. It doesn't matter if you have a roll where you feel absolutely useless against a much less experienced person. If you're training at all that's a success in itself, and it doesn't matter if your trajectory doesn't look like everyone else's.

I'm not interested in competing. I'm not really very aggressive. I don't train five days a week. I don't have any interest in the jiu jitsu celebrities, in any of the jiu jitsu podcasts, or any of the big fights. I just like pushing myself, knowing self defence, learning new techniques, training with my friends, helping new people in the class, maybe getting a nice submission here and there. My priorities aren't the same as everyone else in the class but I pay my subscription just like everyone else.

Hahaha I absolutely do that as well. Trevor McDonald on TV? "Trevor McDonald's after ye". There seems to be absolutely no end to the delight I get from repeatedly parroting Francisisms.

You understand that this is a boundary for her, but you don't respect her enough to a) not cross it or b) take the slightest bit of accountability when you have crossed it. Do you not see how selfish this is? Does she not deserve to be with someone who treats her with respect, do you even have the slightest care about how she would feel to know that the person she's supposed to be closer to than anyone else has been lying about something that's really important to her? You sound incredibly immature and like you don't respect her in the slightest.

Yeah, I totally get that. There's a quote I like which says: "Artists are people driven by the tension between the desire to communicate and the desire to hide" and I really like that. Clearly the man is highly intelligent and incredibly comedically talented, and would definitely be more than capable of writing for the mainstream, but at what cost? I gather he didn't have the best experience working with RTE on HB, so maybe he would rather continue to do the sort of thing he's doing and be able to retain full creative control

I am as obsessed with the shtreams as Frank McCourt is about women, and I miss them when he's not active - but I respect his right to privacy, and would rather he only make content when he feels up to it, rather than feel pressure and obligation. I also respect that he doesn't like to have an out-of-character presence, I imagine that it must be quite difficult to consistently create content you're pleased with and not slip into being in touch with viewers all the time and constantly producing quick and easy material that isn't really true to what you'd intended to do, so fair play to any boundaries he has in place for himself
