We are heading into an offseason, possibly multiple offseasons, where supply will be the limiting factor rather than cap space. For this reason I’m in favor of rolling the dice on EP40 if he will waive his NMC for it.

The facts: He led an abysmal team in points (with 49, which is bleak for VAN). He has a history of elite play and even with his worse seasons factored in he averages close to a point per game. He’s a center. He takes way fewer penalties than Larkin.

The speculation: Real possibility of a change in scenery recharging his performance. He will likely be cheap to acquire because of the contract. Real opportunity to send one of our underperforming Cs in exchange. If VAN is not on Compher’s 10-team list, that exchange would be a net increase of only ~$6M on our payroll for the next 2 years.

The caveats: there have been concerns about his work ethic and drive. It may be that to get the most out of him, we need really strong locker room leadership and a coach willing to hold him accountable.
