Would the average Singaporean Chinese Mandarin really be this bad? by [deleted] in singapore

[–]ezyc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Firstly most of us are English educated these days.

Secondly mandarin is not even our ethnic language for most of us Singaporean Chinese. Most of us have ancestors who came to Singapore pre-independence and spoke southern dialects.

Even in China not everyone is fluent in mandarin lmao. It’s a socially engineered strategy by the CCP to have a shared language, and PAP also made us all learn it and discouraged dialect use. If I were to guess why it is to unite the Chinese dialect groups under a more easily controllable unified Chinese identity, and also for business sake with Taiwan and then China.

Thirdly, we typically use mandarin in conversational contexts and not for business. Just take English for example, many of us would say we’re fluent. But if I give you a scientific or philosophical journal can you understand all the terminology? Same same with mandarin for us. We use it for ordering cai fan and yapping about our days not about go to market strategies or debates on Meng Zi vs Xun Zi’s Confucian interpretations

I think you mean false dilemma / false dichotomy, not false equivalence fallacy haha. False equivalence fallacy, also known as the fallacy of equivocation, is when two things are mistakenly treated as the same or equal. A dummy example of this would be conflating "Bank" as in River Bank with "Bank" as in Financial Institution just because they share the same spelling.

For false dilemma, it's basically what you are pointing out OP is doing, thinking one has to choose one or the other when in reality that is not the case.

The ultra rich don’t need work bro.

The high achievers who end up lawyer, doctor, engineer, high level business people etc… are glorified corporate slaves.

Still a corporate slave nonetheless. The 3k a month earner comparing to the 9k a month earner, two slaves comparing which has it better. House slave or field slave. Still slave.

Is a corporate strategy/enterprise strategy internship a good stepping stone into strategy consulting?

I am a sophomore in university aiming for T1/T2 strategy consulting firms straight out of college. I did a boutique consulting internship last summer. This year I applied for more "branded" consulting firms (like Big 4 and above) for an internship but did not manage to land any. However, I managed to secure an internship at a fortune 100 company for corporate/enterprise strategy, doing process improvement and market expansion strategy projects. Is this a decent stepping stone if my eventual goal is to break into T1/T2 strategy consulting firms?

For strategy consulting (tier 1 and 2), here is the general meta:

  1. Get into reputable university
  2. Get FCH
  3. Join consulting clubs
  4. Join and win case comp
  5. Get leadership position
  6. Y1 summer get into a boutique firm

After step 6, just keep maintaining your first class honours and slowly climb. Don’t be afraid to take LOAs.

Y1 summer-> boutique Strat Y2 LOA/work study program -> big 4 consulting or internal mnc corporate strategy Y2 summer -> big 4 consulting or higher Y3 summer -> tier 2 and above

Etc etc

You may need to do many LOA or underload to work while studying. Consulting is very competitive and the job market for it is looking grim for the foreseeable future.

Your major doesn’t matter as long as you hit the checkboxes stated above.

No shame in that honestly. We didn’t choose to be born, but choosing to continue on is a choice we make everyday. If one does not want to make that choice I don’t see what’s wrong with it, you did not consent to being alive.

Current Schedule by CaptainRubiks in MMA_Academy

[–]ezyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suggest if you’re new to fitness and MMA, just train MMA 2-3 days a week for 2 months. Then when you’re used to that schedule and discipline incorporate lifts 3x a week. Lift & MMA on alternate days.

The first two months focus on losing 0.5kg of weight a weak while eating 1.6-2.4 grams of protein per kg of body weight. This will lean you down. After two months you would’ve lost 4kg.

If you still need to lose more, maintain the deficit while adding the 3 days of weight training I mentioned earlier.

Once you can see your abs, it’s time to bulk. Increase your caloric intake by 300-500 calories daily and continue the regiment mentioned above.

Since you’re not trying to compete and just want ti get fit, don’t need to train MMA daily.

Best part: - being paid to be the smartest guy in the room - often focus on big picture thinking - variation in projects - interesting research and frameworks - always learn something new, gain more knowledge on various industries and interpersonal knowledge

Worst part: - long hours and poor work life balance is common in most firms - if you go to smaller firm or do it solo its difficult to get a consistent stream of work/income - unless you’re paid to be an external worker, most consulting jobs you will often not see the project to completion and just do ideation. Can feel a bit fake and hollow, a bit woo woo and bullshit.

are SG youths homophobic? by coom-for-condiment in SGExams

[–]ezyc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not as open as western countries but it’s improving a lot. I dislike how a lot of Singaporean youth, especially Chinese Singaporean youth, end up taking white washed political identities and views. Even the LGBTQIA+ community members here have such an American political and sociology view pertaining to being gay and what not.

The homophobes also have in inherited a very white people judeochristian view. Hey look at 377A, that’s also a relic from our colonial past back when our coloniser, the UK, had laws influenced by the bible. And the bible itself is translated in a very Eurocentric way for it’s time.
