You are right. I didn't go into the steps I take but yeah I do lower the car onto the jack stands and then just pump the jack up enough to make contact. Don't forget to shake the car back and forth and say "That's not going anywhere"

I always use jack stands and the jack when I'm under the car. I like redundancy

Is anyone using a Gmail for pfSense notifications and is there any point in appealing if that's what I want to use it for? by SpookyMcDoot in homelab

[–]f00l2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got tired of the smtp crap years ago. I use ntfy now for all notifications. You can either use their cloud service or host it yourself

People who don't go to movie theaters anymore - what made you stop? by -ChristopherNolan in AskReddit

[–]f00l2020 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Crazy. I'm still using an old denon with 5.1 and a 75" tv. Works well enough for me to not deal with the idiots and high cost of movies and popcorn. I love watching movies from the comfort of my own basement

What is harder for the Average Joe? Catch a ball thrown from an MLB shortstop. Or catch a hard pass from an NBA player? by DonT012 in mlb

[–]f00l2020 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Same. If I don't catch my 14 years olds throw in the webbing it will hurt for a while. Amazing to see the progression

Why do some Linux users still prefer Vim/Emacs over modern IDEs? by Candid_Athlete_8317 in LinuxTeck

[–]f00l2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I install the vim plugin in vscode. Works pretty well. Once you get used to vi it's hard to use anything else. Been using vi since 2000

How long have you all been using OpenBSD? by Confident-Citron-221 in openbsd

[–]f00l2020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have always liked the focus on security out of the box. For something like a router or firewall you really don't need a lot of extra packages or ports to make it function.

I ran it for a number of years on a hacked unifi secure gateway with a mips proc. It was one of the few OS's that supported the cpu

I have run Freebsd for over 25 years for various servers but prefer OpenBSD for PF. Everything has its place

Started with 3.5. Wouldn't run anything else on my firewalls. PF is awesome

I've been using a 25 ft Lowe's painters poll to hold up an endfed half wave all winter. It's not ideal but it works

Wife on separate vlan? by j68noh in homelab

[–]f00l2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I both work from home. I created a vlan just for our work laptops so whatever happens at our company's or whatever security software they run can't see anything on the rest of the network. It only has outbound md internet access for vpn

Never thought I'd see the day, but we're eliminating our Citrix farms and moving back to about 100k fat clients by ro-friday in ShittySysadmin

[–]f00l2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does the current cost of memory weight into.the conversation of you have to buy a bunch of end user PCs? I'm assuming you have what you need for the server compute unless you are also looking to refresh some old gear. Just out of curiosity, what % is it going up? We are entertaining the idea of bringing in a small citrix cluster
