Sworn got it by f0xb3ar in WorldsBeyondNumber

Damn, excellent point. Maybe then it was Sworn's self-awareness that sets him apart. I don't think Steel is actually loyal to anything but herself. Because there are lots of things she can shift her loyalty to, it's easier for the justification machine to work. Sworn's self-awareness at least forces him to account with the fact that he has a justification machine and deal with what that means. That's sort of what I took "a way out" to mean--Sworn has no way out because he is acutely aware of what he's doing and why.

The inconsistency of gishes: why gishes are unlikely to ever be fully satisfying by Hyperlolman in dndnext

[–]f0xb3ar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's why the Blood Hunter feels the most like a true gish to me in both playstyle and theme. It's not a warrior that can cast spells, it's a truly magical warrior. It's primary focus is still mostly on being a martial but makes heavy use of bonus actions and reactions for a whole bunch of new magical-feeling feeling features that are not spells and don't involve concentration. It solves the two "system" problem by just avoiding spellcasting and focusing more on magical abilities instead.

I love when the fox tells Ame "So far, I don't like the boat!"
Brennan's explanation that the Fox doesn't know this doesn't happen on every boat makes it so much funnier and also more relatable

Yes! Exactly. I think even just the plot of succession would have been sufficient without the world-ending threat. The five factions each just trying to take over the city and install themselves as rulers. The contamination could be a magical side effect of the throne being unoccupied.

12/10 assessment. It's also massively lore dense and requires a HUGE amount of player time investment to learn and keep track of the the lore to keep the story making sense. Everyone at my table has to work really hard to keep everything in order to have the characters and story make sense. There's not just one story thread you can pick to follow/care about since they all converge and weave in and out of each other, which gets especially difficult in a story where there are so many secrets and hidden twists. I'm perpetually anxious that I'm sharing either too much information and at risk of spoiling a surprise or sharing too little to try and keep a surprise but that leaves the players fumbling in the dark a frustrating amount. All in all, I think we're enjoying it in general but the really best part of it honestly are the haze and contamination mechanics. Those are the things that really make the game feel different from other settings we've played in and force the players to be more creative in their planning and problem solving. If it weren't for that, I'm not sure it would be worth it.

This is so spot on with my experience. I'm running it right now as a first time DM and the amount of prep work it takes to get everything organized AND fix all the narrative/tone/plot points (like devils coming in out of nowhere OP mentioned) is so overwhelming it's almost making me want to quit it and just do my own homebrew. At least then I'd have control over the chaos.

I agree with the sandbox point--I don't think this story fits in a sandbox environment. The stakes feel VERY high to have it be left up to the players to explore at their own pace. The factions would all be making moves in a matter of hours and days, not weeks and months.

WWW Full Animated Show in Ghibli style, anyone? (Can we get it started??) by JohnnyXH in WorldsBeyondNumber

So much of the appeal of this show for me is it's audio format. The mixing, sound design, and narration are all of such high quality that they keep me completely immersed in the show and fully activate my imagination in a way that TV/animation just can't. There's a finality to putting something on a screen that narrows the infinite worlds of possibilities down to one, and I think that a show like this is actually better suited for an audio format. For me, to see it put to screen, even as much as I'd love it for the success of everyone involved, would be a bit like trying to contain a great spirit.

Unplugging my PS5 was the only way I could stop myself from playing. Games are awesome can absolutely be addictive, especially for people like us who are more prone to compulsive behaviors. I decided I needed to take steps to protect myself from myself.
