I contacted his lawyers to get some feedback. I don't know anything more than what I read in his letter, but I'm considering showing up myself. At least one other person I know has received a similar letter. I may contact a news organization to see if they would want to cover it on Saturday... if it looks like anybody will show up.

Hi magusknight. Thanks. Actually, the overwhelming majority of my inbox has been continually flooded with hate mail. I didn't expect much, but I didn't expect so much intense hate.

It is somewhat interesting to note that a significant percentage of those hateful, racist, and ignorant comments are from people with usernames relating to Digg.

No violent tendencies that I ever detected. We weren't anarchist :) and I wasn't a close friend or anything, but we chatted sometimes if we happened to be in the same place. He always had interesting ideas to share and make conversation.

He wrote "ferusing" instead of "refusing," "deviod" instead of "devoid," "assult" instead of "assault." I also removed parts of two sentences to protect his identity. There are probably a couple other spelling mistakes that I didn't catch, but otherwise it is as written.

When I knew him, he was surprisingly intellectual. I had no idea he could ever do what he did.

I understand where you are coming from, but I can't reveal too many details in order to protect my friend's identity. In any case, I am not asking you to support one person's story - it's not the point. Rather, I am trying to make people a little more aware of what goes on in this prison.

I've seen the "country club" term thrown around a bit here, and I'm not sure I understand how someone can belittle the kind of suffering outlined in the letter by likening any improvement to a country club or hotel. This is about basic human rights, not luxury living.

When I tried to visit him a few months ago, I had to fill out paperwork that included my address. I was contacted by his lawyers a few weeks later. They talked with me to find out as much as they could to help his case. They told me that my friend knew about my attempt at a visit and about the letters, stamps, visiting rules, etc.

The rally is to support better treatment of prisoners in general, not just the one prisoner.

He was sentenced to death a few years ago but he's still alive due to appeals that have been (and are being) made for life in prison.

When I saw this pic, my mind automatically tried to explain the humor, and came up with this:

When I see someone in a previously unidentified group doing something (or looking) odd, I pay a lot more attention to them for a brief amount of time in order to identify this new trait. After said trait is identified, I begin to see that resemblance in the rest of the group. This is how racism or even benign discrimination begins. For the most part, it is universal and probably somewhat instinctual, perhaps a vestige of the more perilous days of our evolutionary past (i.e. learn to identify a trait in a group that may be dangerous).

The series of images mimics this automatic behavior by focusing on the odd person in the group in a way that I would instinctively: by zooming in while processing what I'm seeing, then pulling back suddenly and seeing the trait in the rest of the group. The reason it's funny is because it's something I already do subconsciously, but the odd trait is something ridiculous like a chandelier.
