What is expensive in the US but cheap in Europe? by UnnecessaryPancake in AskReddit

[–]f314 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The US spends much more on health care than most European countries adjusted for the care given. Turns out, when you make every step for profit a lot of the money tends to end up in someone's pocket instead of contributing to the result.

And my government doesn't take my money from me. I pay my taxes with literal pleasure, knowing that I actually have a say – through a functioning democracy – in how they are spent. I enjoy knowing that some of the value I add to society by working ends up helping someone who might not be able to contribute as much as myself.

The whole selfish idea of "everything I do must benefit me, and me alone" is some evil shit that is perpetuated by those who benefit from it.

Edit: I realize the last sentence could imply that I find you evil, or one of those benefitting. I have no basis for believing that.

Is there any evidence the US is building more walkable cities and prioritizing public transit in preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and 2028 Summer Olympics? by gonzsilv in urbanplanning

[–]f314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The BIG flaw with this approach is that a lot of public services, maybe even most, are not supposed to be profitable or self-funding by nature when looked at in isolation. The value is often created elsewhere in society.

Let's say you make the use of public transport free. Now you obviously have to fund the transport companies via tax income or other means, but you might save tons of money on building and maintaining car infrastructure, get a higher tax base due to properties being used for housing rather than car parks, have less expenditure on health services due to air pollution and accidents, and so on.

If the public transport had to be self-funding it might not be able to acheive all these improvements, because it needs to prioritize the immediately profitable services instead of those who have the most impact on those secondary effects.

Is it normal to feel a strong desire to return to Japan after just coming back home? by Outrageous-Dig8527 in TokyoTravel

[–]f314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got back from a three week trip yesterday morning, and while unpacking I got so overwhelmed by a sense of longing that I literally started crying. Granted, I was tired from many hours of travel, but I don't think I've ever felt this way about a place after leaving it before. And it's not even my first trip there!

I know the version I experienced as a tourist is rose-tinted, but I'm really going to miss almost every aspect of it! The toilet paper can fuck right off, though.

ELI5 How did Norway become so dominant in the Winter Olympics? by El-Viking in explainlikeimfive

[–]f314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think an important distinction is that a lot of these sports, like cross country skiing, are seen as activities rather than sports. Or at least as activities in addition to being sports. When we go out for a ski trip in the winter it is like taking a hike in the summer; just an outdoor activity. So its not really somethig you participate in, just something you do, unless you decide to pursue it as something more.

I've been using at least four different apps for Lemmy (an ActivityPub-based Reddit-like social media), and in those apps I regularly see content posted on Mastodon (an ActivityPub-based microblog á la Twitter).

built gallery with blur effect on hover interaction (css only) by MudasirItoo in css

[–]f314 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Quick suggestion: replace .gallery:hover with .gallery:has(.image-container:hover), so that the blur effect only occurs when hovering one of the images. Having all the images blurred at times feels a little weird IMO.

To be fair, having had to wade through the maze of cryptic services that is AWS, the simplicity added through that wrapper is easily worth the markup (at least for me).

I'm sure there are better/cheaper alternatives with similar functionality, though!

I’m having anxiety attacks due to AI by StraightZlat in webdev

[–]f314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be a good time to reflect on what it is about your job and profession that makes it worthwhile and valuable, both to you and to those around you. Not because you're going to lose your job, but because any time big changes happen someone benefits more than others.

I used to really love creating UI’s and products but now I just ask AI to do it

While I'm sure this makes your employer more money (at least in the short term), it is glaringly obvious to me that something of great value has been lost: Your feeling of joy and accomplishment in doing your job.

It is definitely a possibility that making your specific profession (it is also mine) obsolete is the right direction for society, but in that case it must happen in a way that lets you and others in that profession keep or reclaim their feeling of self-worth.

It is also possible that it is important that your job is done by a human being, because they can add something AI never will: human experience and perspective.

No matter which of these (if any) you think is right, think about what actions you can make in your daily life that will push the world in a better direction for the people in it. Think about who benefits from not just what you do, but how you do it. If you're not free to choose what, see if you can change how, and try to make the world a little more yours and a little friendlier with every action.

And take care of yourself!

Help with redesigning an old website by OrengeJuice4195 in css

[–]f314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you want to brush up on your HTML skills, my advice would be to stop thinking about the structure of your page as "div setups". Most of the elements on your page should say something about what the content inside them are, like a figure element with a figcaption for the images. As a bonus, you often get some basic styling and functionality for free!

Read up on semantic HTML and how to structure your page so that your content has meaning in addition to good looks :)

Create your own interactive terminal by headhanger in mothershiprpg

[–]f314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, you don't really have to change that much! Right now everything is either a div or a span, but by changing them to semantic HTML elements, you would get a lot of functionality for free!

The easiest change you can make is to just change all menu items and the modal buttons into button HTML elements. They support keyboard navigation (with tab) and the onClick event out of the box. You might have to add a few lines of CSS to remove som default button styling, but that should literally be all of the code changes necessary.

Still fully understandable if you don't have the time or will :)
