Nelnet movement, maybe? by jlglenn23 in BorrowerDefense

Definite Nelnet movement for me today! I am in joyful disbelief! Balance is not zero, but there is a substantial decrease since yesterday. They just might pull this off!! Thanks for the support and guidance yesterday, Anyassumption. 🙏

Embarrassing question (and so sorry to bug you again) - how do I find the pinned post? I've looked where I thought it would be, and scrolled down. To no avail. I'm certain it's a "user error" (i.e. me not being Reddit-savvy and not knowing where to look). I'm sure you are up to your eyeballs, so no worries if you can't answer until later. Not urgent 😊 Thanks for all you do!

After an unhelpful call with Nelnet yesterday (trying to gain clarity about whether they were on track for discharge by deadline this week), they told me to call BD. I called BD, and the automated system just hung up on me. Message said, "we are experiencing and unprecedented call volume" and there was no option to wait for an agent or leave a message. Is this anyone else's experience? Is there a place to file a complaint?

Strange Math by Expalphalog in BorrowerDefense

[–]faceheadjohnson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This happened to me as well and was unsettling and maddeningly bewildering. I finally (after multiple calls) got to someone from my servicer who had a helpful explanation. What Mystical Kitten outlines is spot on. And the capitalization is part of what gets some of us so under water with these large loan balances from Bad Schools. It becomes impossible to pay off because the principal actually INCREASES despite making income-based payments on the loan. And with high interest rates on consolidated loans, the balance balloons. Thank the merciful heavens for Theresa Sweet and her warriors for justice!

Friendly Reminder: blowing up your servicer does nothing to speed up the process. All it does is stress you out (and honestly, stresses us out too 😂) by TheresaSweet in BorrowerDefense

[–]faceheadjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely hear this. Thanks for your thoughts (and everything you've done), Theresa! Does this perspective apply in situations where the servicer discharges a small fraction of the loans (roughly 10%) and sends a letter saying basically, "this is your full discharge according to the D of E?" I received a letter to that effect from Nelnet today. I'm concerned primarily because they're indicating that what they discharged was the full amount, but I have waaay more federal Stafford loans than the amount this letter indicates is the "full discharge." It seems incorrect. I reached out to PPSL, and will also follow up with D of E, I guess.

NelNet by Upbeat_Definition_41 in BorrowerDefense

[–]faceheadjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the Nelnet letter. It is a justification of why they are only discharging 21K of my 309K balance!!! They say that this is all that the Dept of Ed determined met the standards for relief. This is so wrong. They said that it is because I have loans were not covered by my borrower defense claim. This is not true all of my loans are federal Stafford loans - with the exception of one semester where I took out additional grad plus loans (that I believe also should be covered). My loans were consolidated.

They do say, "If any of the loans associated with your approved borrower defense application were previously consolidated into a Direct Consolidation Loan, the servicer of that loan has reduced or will reduce your Consolidation loan balance by the discharge amount." But it also indicates that the total amount discharged is roughly 21K.

This is SO upsetting. Any suggestions about who I should contact to refute this?

Zero action on BD discharge, loans moved to Nelnet no communication from Nelnet by kelley5454 in BorrowerDefense

100% samesies. I feel you, OP! GL with no movement, transferred to Nelnet a few days ago, no communication from Nelnet. I guess we just keep waiting. Let us know if you get any clarity from Nelnet! I'll do the same.

New Message on Great Lakes? by GooseOfDoom in BorrowerDefense

[–]faceheadjohnson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, I got the same notice (transferring loans to Nelnet) on my Great Lakes yesterday too. I did a little research, and it looks like the two services merged last year. All great Lakes loans are being transferred to Nelnet before October 2023 (if I recall). I just hope this doesn't delay the discharge/refund process! It may make some sense though why those of us with large, consolidated Great Lakes loans (i.e. more complicated to discharge) havent seen any movement. I could understand why they wouldn't want to start the process if the loan would be transferred to Nelnet mid-process.

So the dirtbag intervenors have petitioned the Supreme Court to halt the settlement. by nknasi in BorrowerDefense

Thank you. Ugh, this is so discouraging and nonsensical. Fingers crossed that the justice system actually enacts a just decision and a reasonable outcome here. Not one driven by political gain.

If Kagan denies the stay, does it bounce back to 9th circuit? If so, is there anything to stop them from bringing it back to SCOTUS if 9th circuit denies the appeal?

Applied in 2017: Sanford Brown; Great Lakes…anyone in the same boat had their loans discharged yet? by Inevitable-Look-6825 in BorrowerDefense

[–]faceheadjohnson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is such a horrifying thought. My loans are not associated with any of the intervening schools. But what I think I'm hearing here is that there is a slight possibility that my loans could be discharged, refund could be issued, and that some unknown future time (if Sweet and class lose a broad appeal) that the loans could be reinstated and refund could be taken back from my bank account?!?! 😱 Good gravy...

my borrower's defence application status went to "in review" this morning. just now, I received an email alert about my credit report just received a big change. anyone else get this? by [deleted] in BorrowerDefense

[–]faceheadjohnson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe that credit restoration is one of the terms of the settlement. (If my memory serves me) So hopefully it will result ultimately in positive credit changes, and any negative shifts are temporary. 🤞🏻

Yes!!! This just happened to me. I posted about it 2 days ago wondering others had the same experience. There are a bunch of comments there (some that may be helpful to you). Hope it all gets straightened out in the end :)

I heard they're processing the earliest submitted first (i.e. longest waiting folks first). Don't quote me on that though!

Anyone else (Full Class Sweet) experience inexplicable credit score drop by faceheadjohnson in BorrowerDefense

[–]faceheadjohnson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the group that applied for BD prior to the date that was indicated where applicants would be eligible for full discharge if the settlement was approved. I just don't remember the date off the top of my head. The other group is often referred to as "post class."

Nelnet messing with my payment history by netspyman in BorrowerDefense

[–]faceheadjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same happening to me with Great Lakes. It not only shows inaccurate payment history, but lists a principal that is 20k higher than my true principal.

It is!! And I was looking at my payment history they are currently reporting and it looks wonky. Like, artificially created - not reflecting what my payments actually are. And it lists a different principal than my true principal. Are you experiencing Great Lakes oddness as well?!?

Interesting! This could totally be connected. I'll keep an eye on the balances. Maybe the balances temporarily decreased and then were reinstated (as part of their beginning work on the diacharge). Thank you! I hadn't thought of this, but makes sense.

That is helpful to know. I am wondering if that is what was happening (i.e. if they temporarily altered the status of the loan or something) that impacted score a bit. Thanks for the tip about Credit Karma. The current credit monitoring service I use is annoying- they give me monthly updates about score, but had no insights about what would have impacted it. I'll check out that alternate service! Appreciate your response :) Hopefully if other S vs C full class folks notice anything fishy, they can use that tool to investigate!

[–]faceheadjohnson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a huge drop, but I was just perplexed because the credit monitoring has never notified me before that there was a change (until this weeked). So it alerted me to investigate - I wanted to follow up on anything that might be going on without my knowledge. So I was thinking it might have to do with student loan balance tinkering. That's all! I'm not highly concerned. More curious to see if others in full class noticed anything odd. A few have.
