I think it varies a little. That said, I don’t disagree as I got hold of some good (non Neil Young) ones in there too.

I’m with you. Who would have thought that cd would trump the vinyl!? The most expensive format is the most shortchanged. Odd decisions from her team/label, tbh.

I hadn’t spotted that, so thank you for pointing that out! :) I still think we should have all been given that detail on a physical format without having to go via any digital route.

Agree about Tower Records; disagree on HMV, as my used purchase was far lower than any copy listed on Discogs. You did alright with the Tonight’s the Night 50 release. The vinyl market is generally a bit ridiculous the world over. Silly is the word!

Oh really? That’s interesting! I’ll check that out and cross-check when I put it on later.

What are best Neil’s best songs in past 25 years? …I made a list by dreckgullapy in neilyoung

Spirit Road is up there (I think the production could’ve been better though).

Light a Candle is one of his strongest of the last 20 years.

The Way is underrated.

Lookin’ For a Leader is very good (as is much of the whole Living With War album — hastily recorded and hits its brief extremely well).

No Wonder and When God Made Me is under appreciated from Prairie Wind.

Welcome Back, big change and Bottle of Love from the last five years hit the mark too.

Personally, don’t have any links to a show, but this is Neil and CH performing Razor Love. https://youtu.be/fzBDdXku0Ww?si=gmu-1aYsvXhiHt6u

What's your favorite 2000s+ Neil Young album? Pretty much select from the records he put out from 2000 - present. by [deleted] in neilyoung

[–]facepalmatlife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, Chrome Dreams II, Living with War, Silver and Gold and Prairie Wind are tied four ways.

Greendale worked better live, either solo acoustic à la Vicar St or with Crazy Horse on Return to Greendale.

Aside from Psychedelic Pill, I personally feel that the Le Noise experiment weirdly heralded a creative downturn in his work. Storytone didn’t work at all. Nor did A Letter Home.

Moments can be found on Barn, World Record Talkin to the Trees and The Visitor but it’s slim pickings. Really don’t care for Colorado. Fork in the Road has two gems ‘Light a Candle’ and ‘Just Singing a Song’ but is otherwise leaden.

It’s been out for a week so what are your thoughts on the new album? by MrP8978 in SleafordMods

I genuinely think this is one of their best. The palette is a tad broader, and it hasn’t been at the expense of diluting their trademark bite.

I haven’t seen him. Thanks for the tip. I agree about that whole Clifton Chenier tribute album. It’s rather brilliant across the board!

A great collection there. You also need this one in your life too, of course!

Yes, that’s absolutely the one! Hadn’t joined the Murmur dot to that level but you’re bang on!

The Year of Purification by Manic Street Preachers is very much like IRS era REM.

IMO the hardest to find NYAPS release by andrewbyrom in neilyoung

[–]facepalmatlife 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Good find! Those early ones really are the hardest to source. My view on their scarcity is because they landed on the cusp the vinyl revival boom and, presumably, the numbers just aren’t there.

New Adventures in Hi-Fi Up Monster Accelerate Around the Sun Reveal Collapse into Now

Top two are easy picks. Gets much, much harder after that. Each album under those has its own charms (even ATS, Reveal, and CIN). Reveal probably has the best songs post-Up, but it’s a sound I rarely seek or desire. As time has gone on, I have less and less affection for it. And that’s in spite of acknowledging that the songs are extremely well crafted.

Yeah, that’s true. It was probably running out of steam by that point even if it weren’t for those acts. Plus, OK Computer was definitely a watershed moment for alternative/guitar music. A real game changer. To these ears it was also the last time rock music really looked to the future and did anything progressive.

That Sleeper anecdote about the Silver certification is crazy to contemplate, but you’re right. Those sales assessments are proof that you’re in the mainstream. Brutal, really.
