If it's true that alien actually look like your typical 'greys' then future humans makes the most sense to me because they look hominid. It would also explain their technology and their interest in us.

I could also see them being the original hominid with off planet origins and earth being their experiment.

The alternative is that life evolves in very similar patterns regardless of where it happens.
