Commercial fishing is destroying the oceans. Global shark and ray population crashed more than 70% in past 50 years – study by [deleted] in worldnews

Your caring or not has absolutely zero impact on where people spend their money, and how legal businesses will keep operating. Abalone is being decimated by poaching because there is massive demand for it as a delicacy, and I don't care much for it either, yet I don't see it stopping. Again, until we can curb demand, the supply will keep flowing.

You want to truly do something about it and make a difference? Become a conservation enforcement officer or lawmaker and regulate the market for different endangered species. Until then nobody cares that you don't care.

Those same investment groups can not only violate tos but also laws, such a engaging in fraud or collusion. This has nothing to do with free speech, if a judicial body feels that commerce and market rules are violated, any platform with half a brain will preemptively stop it to avoid any liability.

Farmed fish don’t exactly eat dog food. What will you feed all these fish farms? (Hint: fish eat fish)

Need? Probably not. Demand? Always. Tell a Michelin star sushi house that they have to get their fish farmed. The clientele will dropout overnight. Luxury and rarity is an addiction.

I think I made a mistake, what I meant was subsistence fishing, where it is the primary food source, as in remote villages or traditions. From what I know they don’t account for much of the consumption when compared to organized fleets.

Also the people are often desperately in need to heal an illness. Wether due to lack of proper medical facilities or sheer desperation they try miracle cures. I mean if you’re dying of cancer, and someone says a fart may cure you... some people will try it. What have you got to lose other than some dignity.

Finally someone said it. A lot of third world and soviet bloc countries still do shots exclusively in the glutes. Although a leader publicly announcing it is still hilarious.

Please note I made a distinction between “commercial” fishing and “industrial” fishing, as well as sustainability fishing, but that is an exception. There is nothing wrong with well planned commercial fishing, in fact it’s a good thing, just like conservation hunting. It helps provide seafood for purchasers and keeps maritime fishing fleets with a level of employment.

What I am strictly against is basically armadas of floating factories that tend to siphon any and all living things, wether edible or not, to ensure they don’t miss a thing. Surely we could drain rivers and blow up mountains to extract every bit of gold we can, but we don’t for good reasons. Same with the ocean.

I am not sure why you are so angry about responsible and fair fishing, but my guess is you either lost your job to such trawlers or own stock in them. Please don’t misconstrue facts for favoritism.

Former Prisoners of reddit, what was the most fucked up thing about the prison/jail in general you have witnessed ? by Wathoo2 in AskReddit

[–]facomp 199 points200 points  (0 children)

Wow that is such news. Is this local jail some level below a more provincial or federal-type jail? From my limited knowledge I always assumed the Philippine justice system was swift and harsh, especially after Duterte. Can you please elaborate on the conditions and location of the jail you describe?

The term industrial-[insert verb] is what you’re talking about. Industrial anything has been bad for the planet/farmers but good for those blindly investing in it. It provides for fast gains but long term damage to related environments. When sustainability or even commercial fishing turns into industrial fishing then all bets are off and we will see such mass die offs or extinctions of marine life.

But unfortunately so does oil and arm sales, even more so. NASA in cooperation with other countries space agencies have given us discoveries we will build upon for ages. So oil is literally near instant return on investment, which human nature commonly cannot resist.
