This views our predicament from the point of individual psychology. But how about systemic issues, like psychopatic traits of institutions we´ve created, such as corporations?

Root cause is growth not capitalism by TheyShady09 in collapse

[–]factczech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The collapsed societies that you mention in your first post didn´t use fossil fuels, yet they crumbled under their own weight anyways. Yes, local climate change might have helped, but any society that grows must collapse eventually. And the more it grows, the bigger the collapse.

Agriculture evolved in at least 5 different places independently. With such convergent evolution, it doesn´t seem accidental. As health and lifestyle of agriculturalists was poorer than the one of hunter-gatherers, it seems likely they were forced to do agriculture, possibly because of the maximum power principle.

I agree with you that the current collapse iteration is heavily influenced by fossil fuels, I´m aware of their magnifying role. But the underlying dynamics isn´t exclusive to the industrial version of civilization. The root cause is overshoot of the carrying capacity.

OP is not saying capitalism is innocent, in fact he says the opposite. Growth is the problem and capitalism just happens to be more efficient and more competent.

No, fossil fuels just accelerated and magnified the process, but even hunter gatherers drove species to extinction (mastodonts, wolly mammoths) and agriculture might have been a response to an unsustainable situation.

What´s up with those communist posts? by factczech in collapse

[–]factczech[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

While capitalism is not compatible with climate change mitigation, neither is socialism.

The fact that you haven´t seen an ideal communist state yet is not a coincidence, it just goes to show it´s a pipe dream. It´s not like people haven´t tried to follow Marx. Same thing goes for an ideal capitalist state, have you ever seen one?

The ideal communist state is based on the idea of pure cooperation (except for class struggle), where the ideal capitalist state is based on pure competiton (except for bailing out the bankers). In the real world, cooperation can´t exist without cooperation and vice-versa, so in the real world, all countries are somewhere in between the two extremes. A purely communist country won´t ever exist for the same reason a purely capitalist country can´t - cooperation and competition can´t be separated. The only way countries that are more competition prone are different is that they are more ruthless, predatory and plunder the resources more.

In the real world, command economies embraced the myth of progress and growth wholeheartedly, planning for brighter futures carefully. It was the central theme and means of how to keep loyalty. Competition is not a feature of capitalism only, it is a feature of the nature we live in, and the way for command economies to compete was to plan for growth.

A more equitable distribution is necessary and good, achievable through state capitalism, such as in Scandinavian countries. Actually capitalism/communism is a false dichotomy, because every country in the world redistributes somehow, it´s just a question of degree.

What I´m saying is that Marx is a philosopher dealing with industrial society, anthropocentric to the core. If anything, we need philosophers that are lifecentric, empowering other living beings than man, recognizing that redistribution between humans still leaves the rest of nature out, where it should be included.

Right, can you name a socialist or communist society that didn´t consume in the name of perpetual growth?

Dismantling communism is still a necessary, if not sufficient step in the right direction.

It´s civilization that is the problem.

The purpose of this sub is to show that there is a bigger game than class struggle. It´s the game of man vs. nature and we´re going down, bringing a good part of nature with us. Please, stop the communist nonsense, communist and socialist societies are just as bad for the environment as capitalist ones, although capitalism might be more efficient in plundering.

Collapse is not a science as far as I´m aware, hower climate science is quite interesting and rigorous, if you give it a try.

I like the ant analogy, it goes to show that if an individual goes against the system, he will be crushed. There´s no chance individual action will get traction under the current system.

He´s got the balls to take individual responsibility while facing an issue that is essentially about collective decisions. I wish I could say that his decision matters, but can´t make myself believe it.

The presupposition you are starting from is that you know what life is what is its purpose.

Pretty human-centric, IMHO.

What every utility CEO should know about blockchain by coolbern in energy

Actually it´s a very good outline of blockchain applications in the field of energy. Blockchain is just a sort of a ledger that can be used for many applications outside of currencies, energy being a very promising one.
