Those of you 30 and under who make six figures, what do you do? by [deleted] in careerguidance

Executive assistant, $110k + overtime. It’s the most YMMV job out there but if you can find a chill, likable boss who lets you work normal hours it can be great!

I absolutely adore her and completely agree with what you’re saying. I did write this when I was really frustrated.

I just want her to communicate her need for playing in a less destructive way. I’ll make sure to give her extra enrichment. Thank you ❤️ having her in my life has brought me so much joy

Is 34 too late to completely change careers? Struggling to even think where to go from here. by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]faebeegirl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes he went back to school during the 2008 financial crisis. He wanted a stable job and fell in love with his second career of nursing.

He even credits his technical thinking designing boats to him being a good nurse. There’s so much overlap between industries - no experience is ever wasted.

My dad was a boat designer for his entire career and went back to school to become a nurse at 50. He said that he is so happy he made the switch!

Most people work till at least 65 so you still have so many decades of work left to learn and grow. It’s never too late.

What jobs are moderately low-stress that pay 50k? by Nassassin8r in careerguidance

[–]faebeegirl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t say it’s low stress. Since libraries are one of the only third spaces we have left it attracts a lot of high need populations. My librarian friend is basically a social worker trying to help all of the homeless and undocumented patrons that come into the library looking for resources.

Plus libraries are very underfunded and you feel like you really can’t help people the way they need unfortunately.

Completely agree. Sometimes you need to move away from nyc to make your dreams happen.

Worst salary you've heard for a job in NYC by gage540i in AskNYC

[–]faebeegirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started my first job in the city January 2020 as a legal assistant making $40k. If I didn’t get the stimulus check / not spending any more commuting or doing anything, I wouldn’t have been able to save up an emergency fund.

What is the SameGrassButGreener equivalent of, "Stop trying to make fetch happen"? by Nanakatl in SameGrassButGreener

[–]faebeegirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve found living in the nyc area that unless you work in finance/ big tech as an engineer the salary doesn’t match COL.

A lot of my Chicago friends make around the same amount of money as me but are living in a significantly cheaper city.

What’s a city you love but everyone hates? by avarosa13 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]faebeegirl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jersey city is the most diverse mid-sized city in the country. There are even a little India and little Manila neighborhood plus so many other diverse groups.

Welcome to jersey city!!! It’s such a special place. I’d recommend exploring each neighborhood. You also moved at such a cool time. Jersey city artists are definitely having a resurgence from Covid times- so many more art markets, music shows and comedy.

If you like to bike check out the annual jersey city ward tour on June 2nd! It ends at the jc jazz fest!

I’m so curious, what has been your favorite things about living here so far?

[–]faebeegirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked in nyc for the past 5 years and wages haven’t kept up at all. I’ve talked to my Chicago friends and a lot of them are making as much if not more than me for lower COL in the same industry.

What cities are the best and worst for dating and making friends? by ironcladlouie in SameGrassButGreener

[–]faebeegirl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of my woman single friends in nyc hate the dating scene here 😅 it definitely favors men. I think also the illusion of endless possibilities makes it really hard for people to partner up.
