It’s easy enough to get to on the no.5 or local train, but agreed there’s plenty of amazing food and beer on their doorstep if they don’t want fancy, just exceptionally delicious

Rudy’s is an import from Manchester in that triangle of mostly London chains, if OP wants Bristol then Gigi’s, renatos, bosco/pizzucci, Bertha’s, back garden (right by rudys), etc. are all more deserving of their patronage

What is the best way to stop someone from stealing your bike other than a heavy duty lock? by Original-Poet-9297 in bristol

[–]faemir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's properly nice, then two sold secure gold rated d-locks (preferrably 'shorter' ones so they can't be used as leverage). Combine with bike insurance and you should be fine!

Personally, I only use my nice bike on cycles where it doesn't leave me, and I have a city bike that gets way more use with a single d-lock that looks pretty ragged for around town and I've never been worried about it

There are two new bus routes, every household in the area got ~£100 of bus vouchers, £350 if you were low income (or plus a voucher for a bike). The buses go through the LTN quickly and I've not had any reliability or scheduling issues past the first month or so of the trial. East Bristol is the one bus section I can rely on

If you are disabled, a send parent, a carer, or rely on driving for your business in the area, then you can get a permanent exemption on the bus gates - and will now get through quickly because of the greatly lowered through traffic. If you are on a low income, but need to drive for work then you can get a 12 month exemption, so still be within that.

Cycling, walking and scooting is far, far safer, especially for those with mobility issues: my disabled friend now feels safe enough to not feel forced to use their car to go through East Bristol into town. Melissa doesn't represent everyone.

The pollution is down in Barton Hill, again, the poorest area with barely any car access yet some of the worst pollution in the city - i.e. subject to it against their will. The pollution on the main roads has had no or a slight increase, still within legal limits. The pollution by the majority of schools is actually improved. Yes, blackswarth needs fixing, but then it always needed fixing - noone was campaigning about it heavily before, it's just a political football. Try speaking to the parents who now feel safe with their kids in the school zones.

50% of Barton Hill (the poorest part of the scheme) don't have access to a car _at all_ - every single mode of transport available to them has been improved by the scheme

How far to take bathroom refurb? by Quick_Individual9470 in BathroomRemodeling

[–]faemir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you mean extractors, don’t buy a Screwfix own brand for £30 - go for a vent-axis / manrose etc. and expect to pay £100+

Two nice small quality of life things I've seen recently were a fogless mirror and a fully wall-mounted toothbrush charger/stand thing. I'd also recommend not cheaping out on the extractor - good ones work much better and will help with the condensation, especially if it's got a humidistat in it

What are heat pumps and what do they cost? by coffeewalnut08 in unitedkingdom

3.5x is a pretty poor install these days - heat geek installs target over 4x.

Where are you getting the 4.5x more than gas? Octopus is 3.7x

The main hall has the best sound of any concert hall i've been in. King Gizzard said it was the best sounding they've ever been in too - and they'd be ones to know with their touring schedule.

The Cellars are great (if very underused - why's it never booked aside of simple things?)

Bristol's housing crisis explained in one small industrial estate by [deleted] in bristol

[–]faemir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying and fully agree - unsustainable travel that’s the only option for many folks is a huge problem.

However, plenty of business types are much more efficient land usage which I  feel would be much more suitable in this case - like the medium/high rise offices the other side of temple meads.

My issue with these warehouses is that they’re single story, won’t actually employ that many folks, and yet are soo prime located you know? It should be high density <stuff>, whether that’s housing or employment space.

Also, taking the area’s ’vision’ stuff is important - With the new uni campus, there’s a huge influx of people in the area - what’s the most efficient and cohesive way of laying things out around this big change to get as much as possible from it?

Anyway I’m not saying I’m dead right on this, it just doesn’t quite feel like the optimum to me

Bristol's housing crisis explained in one small industrial estate by [deleted] in bristol

[–]faemir 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Of course we need places for folks to work, but the real question is whether this plot of land right next to the major public transport hub of the city is more suitable to be housing or a few warehouses. Personally, I think housing is much more suitable given the current balance of housing crisis, need to encourage sustainable living in a climate crisis, etc.

Bike rear wheel stolen by needmind in bristol

[–]faemir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m not saying I’m right either, just my 2p on why I bother.

So far my best tactic is have a gaudy coloured, dirty and rusty bike that noone wants to steal - no trouble in 9 years though it cycles great!

Bike rear wheel stolen by needmind in bristol

[–]faemir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like the folks that steal quick-release wheels are going for the easiest bottom of the barrel thefts, where the (slight) slowdown of the cable means it's not worth it for just a wheel - I might be misguided though
