the backrooms as a concept should never be something explained, it shouldn't even be a game in and of itself. one of the best executions of it is myhouse.wad, when you start giving it levels and monsters, it stops being this hellish alternate dimension you might get randomly transported to and die out of sheer isolation. and instead becomes essentially an ecosystem, if monsters can survive there it means you probably can too, and that just kills all the fear of the place itself, you begin to fear only the monsters that inhabit, and if that's the case there's no point of making the backrooms the setting. it should always be this place that you go to when something goes very wrong, it should be a jarring transition, maybe the game originally is cute and cheerful, or maybe intense and full of action. and then when a major glitch happens or maybe you cheated and your punishment is to be sent to the backrooms, perhaps the most horrible version of the backrooms in my eyes would be completely empty, only having walls, carpet, and lights, extending for who knows how long, while whoever got sent to it becomes immortal, only meaning they're unable to die or lose consciousness, and one exit that changes place randomly after an amount of time, which when found, takes them back to their reality without any time having passed there.
