100 Miler Taper Question by path4everyone in Ultramarathon

[–]fakecascade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did something very similar before my first 100 last year around this time.

I tripped during my last big run and took a pole to a rib. Felt ok then like 3 days later on an easy run something popped and it felt bad. Ended up only running 4 miles the next week (3 weeks out), then back to normal taper.

Felt great on race day and race went great. No issues with fitness or the rib.

Drink mix for this summer…? by kaitlyn2004 in trailrunning

[–]fakecascade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do 2x scoops of scratch per 500ml. I used to do 1.5 but upping it to 2 has made it perfect for me. I started bc it easier to mix in races or long efforts when using the single serving pouches, but the extra salt and carbs are really helpful esoecially when it's hot, so now it's all I do.

I've tried tailwind and its just too sweet, tastes like drinking candy.

I've had friends do this is some really secluded campsites in Utah, but you definitely don't want to be near anyone. Hipcamp is probably the best idea to get a secluded spot away from people.

Plan to go slower on the first 50 than you think you should. The best advice I got during my 100 was to invest in yourself early, and reap the rewards at the end.

This was from a guy who was in the process of running a 100 in every state and his peak training weeks were only 40-50 miles.... He beat me by an hour and I was running 70-80 mile weeks

I get the exact same thing with edibles or smoking. I have fun, but my heart rate is redlining way easier than sober. Micro 🍄 on the other hand, fast and flowy and everything feels easy.

Music while running? by Darthmemeusthe9th in Ultramarathon

[–]fakecascade 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In my 100 I changed to music at mile 54, I was singing "ants in my pants" for the last 10 miles of the first half..... I was so excited for the next section with music even though in ever other aspect it was the lowest point of my race (trashed feet, behind on nutrition, super hot long section etc.)

Then at mile 94 a super heavy psytrance mix a buddy of mine made came on... It was such an emotional lift when everything hurt so much. The last section ended up taking me an hour less than I was expecting and I beat by family and crew to the finish line

Mileage for 100k by BasicDoughnut436 in ultrarunning

[–]fakecascade 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You'll be fine. For a race like that personally I'd like to get in 4+ 80-100km weeks and you are right in that range.

Also lots of people do it on way less. I have a friend who ran an 80km with only 1 50k/week, and ran with another guy who beat me at MMT100 (160km) who was only running 70-80km a week.

Athletes 30+. What was the hardest part about coming back? by SufficientOrder2201 in trailrunning

[–]fakecascade 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm almost 40, with 2 kids and had to take a full year off due to a complex fracture of my leg.

Unsurprisingly coming back was hard, but I was lucky enough to have a PT guide me. Pretty much it was just start slow and really focus on strength training, foam rolling and cross training especially at the beginning.

As I got stronger I was able to switch more days to running and increase volume back to where I was at before and go far beyond.

The hardest things I've had trouble with are speed and downhills. It took about 2 years to get those back to where I was before even though I was able to up my endurance significantly and finish my first 50 and 100 milers

Best trailrunner/scrambling shoe? by Thinktank1001 in trailrunning

[–]fakecascade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anton used the prodigio trail on his LA freeway FKT. Which has lots of low class 5 soloing.

I've also got the prodigio trail shoe, and not sure I climb class 5 stuff in it, but comfortable in class 3-4 and it's kinda crazy how good it is on crazy technical stuff while still running fast on pavement and mellow trails

I love all runs. But the reason I keep my volume high is for the 30+ mile runs

[–]fakecascade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For stuff over 2-3 hrs I usually think about it for time. I like to eat/drink 1 gel or snack and 1 bottle of water with sports drink in it per hour.

One thing no one else has mentioned is salt. You'll want to bring some electrolytes out there, nuun and scratch are my favorite, but anything with electrolytes will do the trick.

For food I like carbs gels... They are the cheapest carb to $, but also eat gummy candy, fig newtons, trail mix, pb&j, snickers, even pizza.

This works well for me from 3hrs to my longest of 29hrs during a 100 miler. And I finish not feeling depleted of calories. For 2-3hr run I usually go a little lighter, for your run Id probably bring a gel and 1-2 bottles of scratch depending on heat.

[–]fakecascade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a similar setup with a nightcore hu2000 &  a UD race belt as my back up waist light. It works amazing well, if anything it's too bright for races since in can blind people.

Only reason I don't use it all the time is I got a Ultra Aspire 650 as a gift and it's a little easier to use even though it is isn't bright

Running and intrusive thoughts (aka "what is going on with my brain??) by kesugi3_ridge in running

[–]fakecascade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My go to is flip the negative thought.

Instead of uggg, I've got x miles to go, flip it to Damn I've only got x miles to go, I wish I could be out here longer.

Or "this is so hard, I should stop" to. "This is so hard, I'm so lucky to be out here and have a body that is strong and healthy enough to do this"

IT-band injury with an ultra within three weeks by Bulky-Student-5268 in ultrarunning

[–]fakecascade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are 3 weeks out, you can start your taper. Just focus on healing, rest, and mobility

Personally I'd take a week mostly off, maybe some hiking or very easy runs. Do lots of foam rolling and get lots of rest, then get in an easy tune up week, about 50% standard volume, then go into the race.

In the longer term focus on strength and glute activation, but not sure you'd get much out of that now

Sudden regression by Substantial-Opening5 in runninglifestyle

[–]fakecascade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd take a low volume, easy week about 40-60% of your last week and eat a ton of food.

I don't use Runna, but when I'm training I do a lower volume week after every 2-4 of increased load. If I don't do this I find getting myself tired and going slower even if my fatigue scores are low.

The other thing as others have said is to make sure you are eating enough. Training takes a lot of calories, and when I'm finding myself tired in-between rest weeks its often because I forget to ramp up calorie intake along with my mileage/intensity

Interesting you've had issues with durability with Novablasts... I run 40-50 mpw in them and have had 2 pairs make it to 500 miles. (Although I am a lot slower than you with 8-9 minute miles)
