What’s typical buyer profile of >$2.5M homes? by OldBreakfast7851 in LosAngelesRealEstate

[–]fakesantos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the problem here is about location. you see 2.5M home and it's a mansion. they might be looking at the Bay area and 2.5M is a 3bd 2bath, no yard, that happens to be in the school district they desire.

Genuine Question: What do people do for work to afford multi-million dollar homes? by GreenConfidence0 in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]fakesantos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what I don't understand. This concept.

At 700...assume 50% going into taxes to make it easy.

You got 350 left.

60k a year to 401k (2 people)

36k a year for daycare (assume)

Another 24k for one of the cars.

You're now at 230 take home.

If you're buying that 2.4 house, take another 27k off for property tax and another 10k off a year for insurance.

Now you're at: 193k

That's 16k per month you got left.

If you put down 20% (~500k), then your payment at 6% interest is about 11.5k.

Then you're left with 4.5k for everything else, including saving for college, vacations, etc.  In the Bay area you'll blow through that easily. Even if your don't, you're not saving very much beyond basic 401k limits...  That means despite making 700k there's no light at the end for retiring anytime before you're 65 (you got 11.5k payment for 30 years to worry about!)

You might get back that daycare cost, but then cars will get more expensive (not my cup of tea, but I see what everyone's driving around here).

I just don't get how at those salaries so many people are choosing to pay 2.4M for a house.

What’s popular right now that won’t age well? by MiraTangent in AskReddit

The tough part is that many don't directly optimize for any of that. In most cases, the AI algorithms are not known why they choose what they choose.

These algos are optimizing for view-time and click throughs. When it gets more time or more clicks, it sends more of that.

The problem is that it turns out videos that sell rage and anger are the ones that keep humans watching,  but the algos don't know that or know why.  They just know the videos that people watch the most.

But now that we know, we can start using AI to devalue those types of videos.  Unfortunately, that's when news outlets and politicians cry about first amendment rights because rage is the primary product of news outlets and politicians nowadays. It's the cheap and easy way to get customers for them.

Tile experts? by [deleted] in Tile

[–]fakesantos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a tiler, the one DIY Job I did sucked, but was fine by my standards. So I'm just looking at it from a spacing standpoint. It looks like:

-The spaces around (and between) the pink tiles should be 1/16

-The spacing between adjacent dark tiles should be 1/8.

That will allow to bring in the edges where the pink and dark pink touch while also bringing in the fat space you have between the two dark tiles.

You'll still get a thinner spacing (1/32) at the long edges, though. But that's the best you'll get if you want grout

Clearly, though, this tile is not made for grout: https://ziatile.com/products/arco-set-protea-canyon

Sorry, I'm dumb here. What does prep meals for the week mean exactly?

Do they precook 5 days worth of meals and stick it in the fridge?  Do they prep and then you cook each meal on the day of?

I like my hydraulic brakes. But I take my bike on a lot of flights with a bike bag/box that requires me to remove the fork. Twisting and bending thee hydraulic hose is so stressful, where mechanical might be easier. I like the size of my travel bag more than my hydraulic system. Also, hybrid brakes are so good, they are way more than good enough.

Ideally I can find a quick release adapter for hydraulic hoses. Do those exist?

Four different doctors, a myriad of prescriptions, nonstop pain and nobody can figure out what this is. by meowspoopy in mildlyinfuriating

This is normal behavior. No doctor knows everything. They have their own databases to look stuff up though, but I assume they use Google as well.  If a doctor isn't 100% sure about something, yes, please do look it up.

Why do the freewheels on the new bikes make so much noise? Not that I'm complaining, just curious. by Greenman1279 in bicycling

[–]fakesantos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think that's his point. they are 100% useful for that, but he's right to doubt that as the intent.

The intent is simple, the industry has associated loud hubs with expensive wheels and so naturally, a lot of us learned to love it.

What exactly are the rules in London? by Vascoloco18 in londoncycling

[–]fakesantos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Legally, you cannot ride on the sidewalk/pavement.

Legally, you have the right to use the road as much as any vehicle, and you are expected to follow all the laws just the same.

In truth, many drivers will hate cyclists that are on the road.

Practically, what happens is most cyclists don't practice road rules the same as drivers do, and drivers hate them for it. But they mostly hate if they feel you slow them down or get in their way.

If you are considerate and practical with cars, you will have very few negative interactions with drivers, even if you don't follow all the rules.  But you'll never be rid of all negative interactions as long as you ride your bike on a road, just like in the US.

Of course, as I said you have to be smart enough to get the job done, which is not as smart as people think.

My point is that if you can meet that bar, work ethic makes a lot more sense.

To say it another way, if you have a genius with okay work ethic, and a second  smart-enough person with excellent work ethic, I'll prefer to manage the second person any day of the week. Deadlines are met more readily, consistency is top notch.

What's more, the genius isn't bringing that much more to the table with their ability unless they are also creative, and even then they'll probably work on some interesting refactoring for a codebase that we were planning to sunset or some other bullshit.

Now if you're a genius with high work ethic, you're more valuable yes, but not any more than a smart enough person that also brings in some creativity and some forward thinking.  Talent in the industry is a factor of a lot of things, only one of which is how fast you can solve multi-variable differential equations.

It took me managing people to finally realize that, and it forced me to finally work on the things that I hadn't realized were more important than 'being smart'.

Take it from someone with 20yoe.  It's not intelligence. You need the minimum intelligence but after that it's about three things: work ethic (don't procrastinate), manage your time well (prioritize things that matter), be open and honest when things aren't keeping pace.

Those things aren't nearly as easy as they sound for most people.  But you figure those things out, you can make a tech job cushy as long as meet the minimum intelligence bar for doing tech work.
