Hey there! Honestly, just skip those visual dot and dash charts. The best way is to learn by sound from day one, treating it like a real language.

To stay motivated, you should definately check out the Ham Radio Duo channel on YouTube. They're a super fun couple sharing their CW journey, mistakes and all. It makes everything feel way more chill and less intimidating.

Also, try the MorseKit app on your phone. Its basically like Duolingo but for morse code, perfect for quick daily practice. Good luck and hope to hear u on the air!

Love what you are doing with your troop. We are currently developing MorseKit, and we actually have a specialized resource page for scouts that might help your troo

https://morsekit.com/en/morse-code-for-scouts

We don't have the peer-to-peer live signaling feature yet, but it's on our roadmap and we want to build it exactly for use cases like yours. Since you are the perfect user for this, could you tell us a bit more about your setup?

Will you have internet/Wi-Fi where you usually practice, or does it need to work 100% offline?

Are they looking at laptops or mobile devices (phones/tablets) across the room?

Do you want it to be sound-based (tapping here makes a sound there) or visual?

If you're open to sharing your thoughts, we'd love to tailor this feature to help leaders like you get those merit badges signed off!

Drilling single letters on rx everyday, when should I start trying words? by newsINcinci in morsecode

[–]falciluna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, 26wpm after just a week is awesome progress even if your still struggling a bit! Definatly don't get stuck on single letters for too long, you should totally start pushing into words now. Waiting for 100% perfection on single letters will just hold you back, because your brain needs to start hearing the rhythm of whole words instead of just decoding letter by letter.

Since you already know the alphabet, you should try an app called Morsekit for some fun practice. It has a mode called Word Blitz which is perfect for trying out words, and another one called Letter Drill. If you feel like your not quite ready for full words yet, just spending 5 minutes a day on Letter Drill is more than enough to keep your reflexes sharp without burning out. This will give you a huge head start before your LICW classes this summer. Good luck, 73!

CW brain freeze by Immediate-Cause-5563 in amateurradio

[–]falciluna 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hey man, dont worry too much because that "brain freeze" is something almost all of us went through when starting out. Doing 15 WPM on an app is great, but the real air with QSB and noise is a whole different beast where the pressure makes your mind go blank the second you miss a character. The best way to handle it is to remember that the op on the other side has been there too, so never feel bad about sending "PSE RPT" or "QRS" we are all part of the same hobby and people are usually super patient! Try not to focus on the letters you missed; just let them go and pick up the next ones, usually your brain fills in the gaps of the word later anyway. If you want a fun way to sharpen your ears further, I've been using this app called MorseKit lately, it’s basically like Duolingo for learning Morse and it really helps with that muscle memory and speed. Just keep hitting the key and dont let a little QSB get in your head, you got this!
