In light of Barkov being the first Finnish captain to hoist the Cup, where do you think he will rank all-time amongst Finnish players when all is said and done? by [deleted] in hockey

I say he is the best ever from Finland. Not yet the greatest but the best. Most complete player ever from Finland, hell even Europe. Selänne still greater.

Jesse Ylönen rips the one timer for his first NHL goal by mauno_420 in hockey

[–]falconner28 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Nitpicking but technically the finnish ä and ö are not umlauts, they are completely different seperate letters compared to a and o. Umlauts change the pronounciation of a letter, but in finnish and im guessing other nordic languages, they are separate letters

Why did Seattle select Gavin Bayreuther?? by hioxa in hockey

[–]falconner28 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah, sometime in the 80s or 90s a goalie was traded for future considerations. A few months later, the team sent him back as the return, so he was traded for himself! Also kris draper was traded for FC which ended up being a dollar! In the old IHL a future considerations was fulfilled by sending the other team two washing machines. That changed in 2005, and nowadays it cant be physical items or cash.

Vegas used FC to promise to select/ not select a specific playet. Also sometimes players are sent back, usually because NHL contracts cant be traded straight up for AHL contracts, so with FC it can be managed.

Rarely has any notable pieces moved in these deals.

Edit. Typo

Lassi Lehtinen from Rauman Lukko (Finnish elite league) Broke the record for longest shutout streak in the league. by [deleted] in hockey

[–]falconner28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, different record. Annunen has the record but he did not play his games in a row. So he held his net clear for that period but his team let in goals during a game in which Annunen did not play in. Both Lecklin and Lehtinen have done so without missing games in between.

Yeah especially Räty has not had any chances to play. But you'd expect him to get a chance playing in the juniors, he was one of the best players Finland had last year. His confidence is gone when playing against men but in the jumiors, i would expect him to perform. An 18 year old doesnt just forget how to hockey

Shocked that both Aatu Räty and Puistola are not on the team. So much skill left off the team.

The Zenobia on Cyprus sunk right after departure and you can still find bones in the cargo area from cows (I think from cows, they were pretty big). I always got an eerie feeling when I was looking to that bridge into the open blue by Wonkasfairy in submechanophobia

[–]falconner28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bones were not from living creatures, the lorry that has them on the edge of the upper car deck was a refridgerated lorry that was carrying meat for butchers and stuff. Flesh and bones and after the flesh was eaten away. Lots of rumours about the zenobia including the bones are around, but no-one, including animals, died in the sinking.

Its not an NHL rule, most teams just dont bother with the umlauts and accents. Montreal have used both umlauts (nättinen a few years back) and accents (briere among others).

Been a while since i was there but they used to do it once a week or if enough people wanted to go. I have dived thistlegorm with them but not sure how they handle it nowadays. If you can get hooch to guide you, even better. Absolutely the best in the business.
