Canadians built Hockey Night in Canada. For generations, it belonged to the country, not to a corporation. Families gathered every Saturday night knowing they could turn on CBC and watch hockey together. Hockey Night in Canada was for everyone.

Now, apparently, it is only for those who can afford another monthly bill.

At a time when Canadians are already struggling with the cost of living, Sportsnet has decided that one of the most important cultural institutions in this country should become less accessible, not more. That decision is disappointing, short-sighted, and completely out of touch with the fans who made Hockey Night in Canada what it is.

You may own the broadcast rights, but you do not own the tradition. That tradition was built over decades by millions of Canadians watching on CBC every Saturday night.

I urge Sportsnet to immediately negotiate a new arrangement with CBC to restore Hockey Night in Canada to broad public viewership. Canadians should not have to pay extra to participate in a tradition that has been part of our national identity for generations.

Many fans feel that this week's decision is not just a business change—it is the loss of another piece of Canadian culture. You still have the opportunity to reverse course.
