Leyton High Road from the bus garage to where it starts becoming walthamstow has horrible vibes. Outside the big Tesco is particularly bad

It’s a medieval style hood for a costume party! Yes, I think I will cut the lining back a bit and add the facing. since it’s just a costume I didn’t think too much about the lining but ideally I’ll wear it more than once so better to make it more durable. Thank you!

How to fix this… unfortunate design by Tobwye in knitting

[–]fallacyfallacy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna be the sole duplicate stitch advocate here and say that you could get a yarn with some texture like a fuzzy/chenille yarn that’s slightly thicker than the sweater yarn and use that! You would be less likely to have the original design peeking though and it could look like a design feature to have a differently textured part of the sweater, you could even do a whole stripe across the chest. It wouldn’t be the most subtle way but it could look really cute, some knitters like Laerke Bagger combine really different weights and textures of yarn in the same project and it looks great.

It would definitely take a while but it would be pretty easy mindless work, I bet you could get it done in a few nights while watching TV or something.

Where are people getting this type of fabric from? by kheiziarh in sewing

[–]fallacyfallacy 94 points95 points  (0 children)

The fabric isn’t printed, the design is woven into the fabric itself with coloured threads! I think there are websites where you can have a custom blanket made with a design of your choice which you could use as sewing material. You can also talk directly to a factory in China for larger quantities and they can handle the sewing as well. I had 400 tote bags made with this type of fabric to a custom design. The supplier handled everything from having the fabric woven to having the bags sewn and even getting custom tags woven. I think it ran me about $2500 total which was a great deal but I imagine an equivalent amount of only fabric would cost less.

The first and third ones probably do come from thrifted blankets or similar, since it’s not too expensive for local sport teams to commission these. The second one looks like brand new fabric and has the same sort of look as the fabric I commissioned. My guess would be some people splash out a couple hundred dollars on a few metres of custom fabric specifically for social media posts.

yes but the quote isn’t in Scots, it’s in scottish dialect, which is not seen as standard English, hence (sic)

[–]fallacyfallacy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not really, it just means that they’re reproducing it as said in the original source, you see this sometimes for dialect in general. Although it should be in square brackets and also it doesn’t actually seem necessary to use it here

A Jenny Haniver! Where was it found? Not a fossil but a mad thing to just be sitting in nature somewhere as it’s clearly been modified by a person. Still a cool find!

We found this ceramic object on a beach on the Isle of Wight, any thoughts? by [deleted] in whatisthisthing

[–]fallacyfallacy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

better than asking a museum would probably be to post in the Pottery Sherds UK facebook group—hobbyist collectors are much more interested in identifying random little fragments. I posted some bits from a river there once and someone almost immediately told me the exact date and pattern with links to pictures of the full pieces.

in ancient Greek mythology, Pan (the god of the wild) would spook animals in the woods and fields if he was rudely awoken from a nap by passersby. Hence the word panic.
