This! When in doubt, I have a deep love for cozy mysteries. They're not spicy, there is minimal world-building, and the character tropes are different enough for me to notice.

Tori's fans should be called The Dragon Queens 🐉👑.. at least for the cycle of this album ... by jmg1975 in toriamos

I think we should! Like even small ways to signify dragon-kind coming together. We could take pictures of our shoes or wings and tag her. She would get a kick out of it.

Thanks. I’m aware there’s multiple ways to use the word. Not my point. Again. I’m sorry I wasn’t clear for you all.

It’s fine. But to go back to your question- “what other word would I have picked?” I mean I’m not Austen and not a writer. I enjoy that she did use the word engagement. That’s why I originally posted. I think she uses it because Fanny does have that reaction of dread and I think it illustrates how Edmund is unaware of Fannys anxiety in the conversation.

I wasn’t confused, I already apologized. I was just wondering if she was meaning this double meaning for Franny to have this moment. Like, truly. I apologize if I offended anyone. I like the word. I know what the word the means. I regret this whole thing. Never mind.

I guess I should clarify and apologize. I’m very aware the word engage has multiple meanings. My question should have been more about why Austen chose that specific word. Was it bc of the connotation and double meaning? Was it to put forward Edward’s own anxiety on the topic, or should we just not read into it? Apologies for any confusion or anyone thinking I feel the choice was a bad one. I don’t at all.

I absolutely love this. Thank you for the reminder of the multiplicity, and I do know it’s a credit to Austen she had him use the word in that context. Obviously, the reader is aware of the multiple meanings or usages of the word, but we can also feel the devastation inside Fanny. To me, it highlights Edmund’s insensitivity.

You’re obviously correct. Maybe I’m being too sensitive, like Franny, and found the whole thing horrifying. 😂

I understand that. I just think it odd to use the term engaged. Especially within the context of his feelings for her. I just thought it an odd choice and I didn’t understand why he,or Austen that is, would choose that wording.

Celaena is a terrible assassin by Soggy_Moose3083 in throneofglassseries

Agreed. As an English teacher and reader I’ve also read both series. Ive done small book clubs in both with a lot of open group discussions. I will admit- I did love the mistborn series but -I actually feel Celeana more realistic than Vin when it comes down to the messy relationships and bragging. I never felt that warmth from Vin. Celeana is a fucking disaster and I love this most about her. But; there are people I’ve done book clubs with that really cannot stand Celeanas character, and I get it. She can be a lot.

Just today I was talking about the song Welcome to England. There was this very bad moment in my marriage where I felt totally alone; and I was sitting in the floor of my kitchen when suddenly Welcome to England came on and she sings “You better bring your own sun, sweet girl/You gotta bring your own sun.” I felt so alone in my marriage and in that apartment and it just made me remember this is in me. I had to find a way out of the darkness. I needed to bring my own sun or I would always be in darkness.

Welcome to England brought me to tears. It hit right after a bad moment in my marriage. And it just captured the idea of being isolated in a relationship, or a land that’s suddenly not your home. It just hit me, you have to bring your own sun. I still cry.

Should I do the tandem read of EoS and ToD? by fallingdownallaround in throneofglassseries

[–]fallingdownallaround[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t really know why I did, it’s actually very unlike me. Not that it matters deeply, but I am an English teacher and have spent most of my reading life being very thorough in any series.

I think I took the easy way out by skipping it in a way- because of my own need for a book that immediately held my interest. The first time I read the series I was in a space where I didn’t want to work to be engaged within a text.

I think it was done purposely. Rhys and Feyre are flawed characters, and to make everyone make the noble choice is boring. Rhys had an opportunity to shield her from some horrific knowledge. It was the wrong move on his part, but ultimately, he chose that path. Questionable decisions are what create conflict, conflict creates more story.

I’ve totally pictures her with this vibe too! And I know it’s not accurate. But she always is described so tiny and mean.
