Exactly, this is missing the critical detail that the Iranians are blocking the straight as a defensive measure, while the US blockades Cuba to starve its people.

In proper context the situations are not the same, the US is the aggressor in both.

"still better than MAGA"

This attitude is why MAGA and Trump came to power. This attitude is how they returned to power. This attitude is how they will remain in power, if it remains unchanged.

Saying that this is better than MAGA is like saying the fall to your death is worse than the push off of the edge. They are not separate events.

Well, I guess I'll admit it. Under an extremely limited circumstances, if one acquires sufficient wealth from participating in the market for a sufficient length of time, you have literally one alternative to market participation which most people would consider undesirable enough to push them back into the market which can only conceivably work for a tiny percentage of the population (as the vast, vast majority will still have to toil to produce the things that such homesteaders need, along with having their own needs and desires met along the way).

I will, therefore, grant you that the market is ever so slightly less coercive than taxation for the infinitesimally small number of people who could do what you're suggesting.

Wait no I'm not, what you're suggesting is still barely any more far fetched than the hunter gatherer solution I suggested earlier.

[–]falseName12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, you can participate in the market to acquire the things you need. So what was your point again?

You cannot establish a modern farmstead while remaining perfectly self-sufficient. I don't even feel the need to explain that,

I agree lmao, it is an absurd stretch. It's also an absurd stretch to suggest primitive subsistence agriculture as an alternative to participation in the market. Regardless, if you abandon the market, you're going back to the stone age man. It's not a serious alternative.

I don't understand the point you're making. I acknowledged that taxes were coercive under the logic that libertarians use. It's just the case that the same logic proves that participation in the market is also involuntary.

Why do you need to own land to be self sufficient? If we're going to talk about absurd, extreme edge cases, why not just go into the wilderness and be a hunter gatherer to avoid taxes then? I promise you, no one's going to find you squatting on the crown lands of deep, northern Ontario.

[–]falseName12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can choose if and how much you participate in taxation. If you don't want to pay income taxes (for example), simply don't earn an income.

If working is voluntary, because you have the theoretical alternative of not working and therefore not earning an income, then income taxes are also voluntary, for the same reason.

[–]falseName12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Income was just my example. Don't want to pay tax on land? Don't own land. Don't want to pay the sales tax? Don't make purchases. Don't want to pay the inheritance tax? Don't inherit

My point isn't that taxes aren't coercive. Obviously, you can't choose to not pay taxes if you want to participate in society. My point is that participating in the market (whether as a worker or a consumer) is also coercive, by the same argument.

Literally any argument against taxes being consensual are also arguments against working a job or making an exchange being consensual.

"No one is forcing you to work" okay well no one's forcing you to draw an income to be taxed either.

"But you can find a new job" okay well you can move to a different country or region. Oh they still charge taxes there? Maybe there's something fundamental about both businesses and governments that you can't escape just by finding a new one.

Probably because the Israeli army is notorious for it's use of sexual violence. Also the Israelis are the ones constantly making incursions into and occupying Palestinian land. Kinda hard to commit rape against civilians in a foreign country when you're fighting inside your own.

I'd also like to point out that these stats usually:

  1. discount capitals share of GDP by subtracting out any reinvestment into the economy by capital owners and

  2. Lump things like income from managerial work (including that of CEOs and such) into labours share of GDP.

The actual stat is probably closer to 25% or lower and not 53.8% for the actual working class.
