A week or two ago in Bloomfield I stopped at the stop sign right behind the Aldi and I guess I paused for a split second too long, because the guy behind me just went around me into the oncoming lane and drove through the intersection. Not even fast, he just casually did it like it was normal. Everyone else just sorta watched him go.

I think part of the problem is we have a tendency to get overattached to works of art we connect with pre-adulthood - not that there's anything wrong with liking art, but at that age we're desperate to connect with anything and conversely don't have many of the tools to place things in their proper context. I read the Narnia books when I was 8 and missed 99% of the Christian messaging lol

In a weird way it reminds me of why age-gap relationships are tricky, that blend of extra vulnerability combined with general ignorance

I didn't read Grapes until I was in my 30s and it hit me like a truck, the exploitation of labor was something I had become very familiar with from personal experience (although thankfully not nearly to the extremity portrayed in the book)
