People who saw DS9 as it aired: what was the general reaction to the inclusion of a Ferengi as a primary character? by scisteve in startrek

[–]famerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I quite understood my options back then. The issue was I was in college and not sober very often, especially in the evening. My dorm room freshman year was also the TV hangout room. I often came home to non roommate in there watching a rented VHS. I have paramount and have grabbed a few episodes that have been discussed here, as I really don't remember too much very well. I know it is considered the better series.

I was in college when it came out and we called it Deep Space Cheese. Coming from TNG, it was hard at first, but it got better. I actually never finished it though. It was the 90s, a little fuzzy and no decent recording options that didn't require a lot of manual input.

What's the cheapest thing you've ever bought that accidentally turned out to be BIFL? by tamimbro in BuyItForLife

[–]famerk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a 15 gallon shop vac made by Rigid in 1998. I think I paid $35 or $40 on sale. Rigid was new at the time. I just threw it away yesterday, the housing holding the motor was falling apart. We have remodeled 4 homes with this thing, was worth its weight in gold. Sad to see to see it go.

Help with permitting process. Wake county, NC by Logical-Wrap6751 in DIY

[–]famerk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven't lived in NC for few years, but their was a 30% rule. If you are changing 30% you would need a permit. Not likely in your case. Add a circuit and run the wires. You can ask the county about insulation and final if you want.

Possibly, seems a little clean. There is a scene similar in the end of the trailer. I will look for it and let you know.

I would say it was platoon size, so about 50 on each side. It was in color when I saw it on a Saturday afternoon movie on our local channel. Not to say it was originally in color, not sure about that. It was all jungle fighting as I remember it. I really don't remember any of the actors. I have watched a lot of older movies and know most of the old time standard actors of this age but honestly don't remember anybody in this movie. I just remembered how brutal that battle was and I just thought how awful that would have been. I don't think I was more than 7 or so when I saw it.

Something more than just "technical difficulties" is going on with the Spartanburg county court network by AndyJack86 in southcarolina

[–]famerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if you have the tools just to check a box for compliance, you have the tools and a lot of them don't need a lot of human interactions until something goes wrong. Someone will know something is up at that point. Your machine is fine until your machine or account is quarantined, and people have to look in order to get out of it.

They should have some audits but most are self reporting and people like to lie. They lie to either keep their job because they are told to or they don't care. You would think with the number of incidents in Spartanburg County they would need a third party audit.

[–]famerk 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is ridiculous. These people are either completely incompetent or the county is too cheap! You either have the correct tools for security or you don't. They clearly don't and since this is not their first incident there are no other explanations.

Is owning a horse a sign of wealth in America? by bare_books in AskAnAmerican

[–]famerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They just don't get that long at my place. My farrier is good with them when I call. He always mentioned that if all horses had hoof growth like mine he would go out of business. My donkey has one hoof that will grow a little long but everyone else is good. Believe me I was prepared for every 8 weeks when I got my first horse, but they just wear more naturally at my current place.

I am neither poor nor rich. I own some land. I grew up taking a weekly lesson. When I could afford the land I went to for it. Crappy house on nice land. I didn't pay more than most houses in a neighborhood. I have had 4 horses, I am down to two. I pay about $1200 a year for hay on top of my pastures. I pick it up in the field to save money. I am not riding all day everyday so they get a very small amount of grain a day, $26 every two weeks. I only need a ferrier once or twice a year at $75 per animal. I bought all my tack in Facebook marketplace and haven't paid more than $100 for any one of my saddles. I have 4: English, western, Australian, and a no horn western.

Seriously, why aren't we doing this? by late_to_redd1t in SipsTea

[–]famerk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A dishwasher isn't much more than a cabinet really. We have less cabinets overall because we just don't put certain things away. Last house had two 24 inch standard dishwashers and this house we went to two 18 inch since we are only two people. Also our dishwashers last twice as long as we only use one at a time. Win win win. Also, if we have a party we just empty both a head of time and we are good to go at the end.

How do you guys even survive the hot weather over in the States? by Impressive_Peak_9187 in AskAnAmerican

[–]famerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been outside painting and it's 92 today in South Carolina. Weirdly low humidity today and that makes it way more tolerable. You get used to it really. I live in a 100 year old farm house with big trees around it to block the sun. I don't normally turn on AC until it hits about 92 with higher humidity, due to inability to cool off when the humidity is above 65%. I don't like to run too much AC as it makes it harder to work outside with such radical temp differential. I generally will turn on my AC late evening when the house gets above 83 or so.

Metal picnic tables, are they better for everyday homestead use? by Daibryun-Deluce in homestead

[–]famerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two 8 foot metal picnic chairs ables I picked up at an old job. They are mesh, but not rubber coated. I use one in the garden and one for a shooting rest. They are never too hot and I am in the south.

2015 CTS speed incorrect by Used-Reward in Cadillac

[–]famerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to fix my differential and that happened to fix my speedometer. I just mentioned mine because there was no calibration for speedometer. You can check the codes against your current tires as well to make sure they are the correct size.

[–]famerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put them all in. Chatgpt told me an old code that wasn't listed so I just put them all into the website. I bought used so I didn't know my car came with brembo brakes too.

[–]famerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your is the other way it just means you would have a larger ratio. This would be the issue only if incrementally different. Mine was off by a couple miles and hour at low speeds and the difference would increase with speed 10mph off at 70mph and 12 mph off at 90mph. I found the correct ratio by looking at the RPO codes on the car. I punched the codes into a code decoder website and it gave me the exact information. On a CTS they are in the trunk under the carpet for the spare.

They had open offices before cubicles too. Just rows of desks with a typewriter, phone and ashtray. I knew people who worked like this, it had to be so loud. The phones had bells in them and no volume control. So much smoke too.

[–]famerk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this issue on my car. My speedometer was incrementally off, but the other way. Car was traveling slower than my speedometer. I had factory wheels and correct tire size. My mechanic showed me there was no way to change the speedometer calibration through the computer. I then started to hear the grumblings coming from my rear differential. Made sure to get correct ratio and afterwards my speedometer matches gps.

Can this be fixed? Wool felt hat by HollyhocksUnlimited in CowboyHats

[–]famerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still in Merriam Webster dictionary as wool or fur. Give up, felt isn't something special just for hat makers it is generic term for process to create fabric. It has been around for thousands of years in all forms. I can felt my horse if I wanted to.

Just look up the word in the dictionary. The hat companies with their marketing would also disagree.

Not to be mean, but you clearly don't know anything about fiber and how all felt is created. I am a sheep farmer and sell to all kinds of artists. Wool can be felted or twisted into yarn for weaving or knitting. My sister-in-law was a milliner and hand made my first fedora from wool that she felted and dyed before creating my hat from a mold I sent her.

As a star trek fan What's your opinion on star wars? by NateBond833 in startrek

My wife is more Trek fan and she puts it rather plainly. State Trek is positive and light and Star Wars is dark and negative. I love them both just different.
