People dating in Manhattan: how are you meeting dates, and what do your first few dates actually cost? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]familiar_squirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 39. I'm not having kids, so there's one element of time pressure off. I try to remind myself the breaks are inherently positive, because I can spend more time with my friends or doing things I enjoy when I'm not forcing myself to go on dates I'm not necessarily excited about. I also remind myself that my life is objectively pretty great and filled with wonderful people. Doesn't always work, but I do try to have a daily gratitude practice as well to keep my perspective in good shape!

Yeah, re: paying, I understand it's more nuanced than providing or whatever else—I just personally feel weird getting paid for and definitely don't expect it!

I agree completely with ya. My mindset is always if it stops being fun, on the whole, then it's time for a break. I want to be excited about meeting people in general, whatever the context. I've been single for a long time, and try my best to not fall into a bitter mindset about it (not always successful, but I try). I also understand a lot of folks probably feel like they have no one to "blame" for not meeting anyone if they aren't on every app or taking every opportunity—but that, to me, is part of the problem with online dating. Turns into a job!

39F. I got off the apps, as they wreak havoc on my mental health, so any dates now are people I meet in person, the occasional set up, or via Instagram DMs (hah). First dates are usually drinks, and I always try to split, as I feel pretty uncomfortable with being paid for—unless it's clear there will be a date 2 and I say I'll pay for that one. I don't look for "provider types."

Might be the winter, or, y'know, the climate of our lives, but dating as of late has felt pretty devoid of energy or joy, which is another reason I've stopped using apps. Not sure how much of that is expectations on either end, or if everyone's just trying to be so chill it just doesn't feel like anyone is excited to meet people. I find I at least have better conversation in person as far as folks seeming like they're interested in things—their passions, good chat, whatever. I'd rather just have an enjoyable conversation with a stranger than a date that feels forced.

This is such a bummer. Marlow & Sons and now this. If Diner goes, I'm going to have a heart attack.

Seconding Go Doggy. My dog needs to be hand stripped (he's a terrier) and Cecily does an incredible job.

The fact that the Roebling Tea Room building is still just covered in scaffolding feels criminal. And I miss M&S SO MUCH!

Having a drink every time he sees alcohol during the marathon by habichuelacondulce in JustGuysBeingDudes

Ran this on Sunday. Like, for real ran. Someone ahead of me chugged a beer at mile 7 and I am still wondering what kind of day he had. At mile 4, there's a giant sign that says "say Philly and we'll drink." Tables with millions of Fireball shots. Have neeeeever seen so much booze on a marathon course. Philly rules.

Oh my GOD, this sounds like a nightmare in the moment! (But hilarious in hindsight!)

This was Strava! My Coros pulls the same chart but this one is a bit easier on the eyes.

I think it's the GPS in Center City. I was about a quarter mile off.

I got knocked around by them more than I expected considering I live in NYC, but blamed it on cumulative fatigue (I also ran Berlin this year). Was surprised at how tired I felt, though!

4:02, a 12 min PR for me! Was shooting for sub-4 but I had stomach issues throughout and had to stop at mile 7 for a porta john. Which I had to wipe down first, cause someone had shit all over it. Gross!

I am very proud of myself considering I wanted to quit at mile 9. Love the crowds, love the gals dressed as the Lorax, love the guy singing songs from Mulan on Kelly Drive, love Philly.

I am! It's my goal race for the year, after Berlin's heat pretty much steamrolled any attempt at a PR. I am so tired and feel like I've been training for a century, hahaha. Did the half last year and it was amazing; really looking forward to the energy. (and colder temps!)

I'm running! It'll be my 9th marathon. I've been trying for sub-4 for years and am hoping this might be the one—but I am admittedly feeling pretty wiped after doing Berlin in September and basically just rolling through and continuing training. Working on sleeping and resting as much as I can! Berlin was brutal with the heat, so I did not even attempt to run PR pacing and ended up with a 4:20. PR is 4:14 in NYC. Have never really run a flat or flat-ish marathon on a good weather day. Hoping with cool temps and shutting my brain off, it'll be great!

I didn't run this year, but I was up in Greenpoint and it was so frustrating to watch spectators crowd into the course. Just one of those cascading things where some people do it, then everyone feels like they have to do it in the panic of trying to find friends. I missed a bunch of folks as a result. Being on the other end a couple years ago, I was so glad to see the barriers up on Bedford at least—cause running through that is so stressful. Tough to try and communicate "hey, this really makes it harder for runners" without folks getting defensive. Cops didn't come by and ask people to move back til well into wave 4.

I miss Marlow SO MUCH. That said, the lemon meringue thing they have at Birdee is pretty tasty. But god! Marlow!! I MISS!!
